  • Michael Giacchino, Germaine Franco and Camilo Lara talk about the music of Pixar's Coco!

    Over the summer I visited the hallowed grounds of Pixar (of course I took an obligatory photo of the big Luxo Jr at the entrance... it's almost mandatory when you go there) and got to see a little bit of the behind the scenes of Coco. 


    One of the big focuses was on the music of the movie. Composer Michael Giacchino was on hand to talk about his score and so were Germaine Franco and Camilo Lara. Germaine was in charge of arranging the music and writing the actual songs and Camilo's job was to keep the movie authentically Mexican by making sure the source music wasn't just random Mariachi stuff that is in every Hollywood production set in Mexico.

    The reason why there was such a focus on the music is pretty self-evident when you see the movie. It's about a boy whose dream is to be a musician, but his family will not allow it. Music is the soul of this child and frankly it's the soul of their small town, who worship a deceased movie star/singer named Ernesto de la Cruz.

    The filmmakers needed to populate this town with music, give young Miguel the inspiration that sparks his passion, and for that to work it had to be authentic, which is where Camilo comes in. He's an expert on the broad tapestry of traditional Mexican music so he makes sure the music you hear playing in the town or in the town square (the source music) isn't fake Hollywood stuff.

    The second type of music are the original songs in the film, inspired by the various types of Mexican music, but do it as storytellers that support that story they're telling. That's what Germaine Franco was in charge of. She arranged both the original songs as well as some traditional Mexican tunes so that they melded together into one cohesive soundscape, taking particular inspiration from the Oaxaca region of Mexico.

    And then there's score, which was Giacchino's job. You know Giacchino's work from a million things. The Incredibles, JJ Abrams' Star Trek, Rogue One, Up, War for the Planet of the Apes, etc. The job of the composer is to bring emotion and themes to the music, something John Williams so masterfully did in his Star Wars score, for instance. Themes and motifs became one and the same with the visuals. When you hear his Force Theme you know some force stuff is going on or when the Imperial March kicks up you know Vader is near.

    I was able to talk to all three people during my visit. Below you'll find my interview with Michael Giacchino, Germain Franco and Camilo Lara. Enjoy!


    Eric Vespe: First of all, I wanted to start by telling you that your War for the Planet of the Apes score is one of my favorite scores of the year so far.

    Michael Giacchino: Aw, thanks. Matt Reeves is a great director. I love working with him.

    Eric Vespe: Since I have all three of you here in front of me I think we should talk a little about your collaboration. What is the creative process like since you're all bringing different kinds of music together that ultimately has to be one cohesive, rich sound.

    Michael Giacchino: Basically if you look at three aspects of what has to be done in the film you have songs, you have source music and you have score. Germaine and Camilo have been there since the beginning, since before I came on board. If you guys want to talk about how you started I can pick up when I came on board.

    Germaine Franco: Camilo started a month or so before me...

    Camilo Lara: It's been very interesting. It's a complex situation. I guess Michael needs to put some salt on the emotions, make it so you can show those feelings, and Germaine has been working on these amazing songs, which are instant classics. I'm so excited to see them blossom. I've been helping with the process of making sure the elements are Mexican.

    Michael Giacchino: He's our Mexican Obi-Wan Kenobi.

    Camilo Lara: I would say Yoda. (laughs)

    Eric Vespe: So you're here to keep Michael honest and make sure everything is authentic.

    Camilo Lara: In a way, but I am not a purist of Mexican music. I mean, I do Mexican music because I'm Mexican, but I guess it just needed to feel right. It needed to feel correct and you can tell that.

    Eric Vespe: Yeah, you can tell when you see a movie set in Mexico and they pull out the canned public domain Mariachi music or whatever.


    Michael Giacchino: That's exactly what we wanted to avoid. We wanted to make sure it felt truthful and it came from the heart of this country.

    Germaine Franco: From the beginning we had the mandate to keep it authentic, but also be able to tell a story. We took songs, some that you've heard before and some that were written that I helped arranged and orchestrate... The first thing I ever did was arrange and orchestrate the big extravaganza of de la Cruz singing. We thought “What would that be like in that golden age of Mexico meets Hollywood cinema?” and adding fantastic Mexican musicians into the tracks.

    Also, there's a lot of great Mexican musicians in LA and players that can play the style very well, including the guitarist you heard today. Every time we sent a demo or I did an arrangement, we kept that in mind. It's not just going to be a marimba score or a mariachi score. Even though that's great music, let's look at all the kinds of music that you hear and let's focus on certain styles and, as Camilo likes to say, smells of Mexico.

    Michael created a bunch of source music which we took down to Mexico and we got to collaborate with the musicians there. In addition to playing the traditional music we also had them play some of his source music. It's all been a really great situation. We all respect each other for what we each do, so it's a lot of camaraderie, a lot of nice experimenting and openness.

    Michael Giacchino: One of the things that I love so much about movies in general is that I can jump into a project and take on this whole other character. You know my music. I like it to fit the movie. If that means it needs a completely different orchestration idea I do it. This is a perfect project to come into and become what the soul and heart of Mexico is.

    I had a narrow window into that world through my dad's record collection, but then growing up and getting to work with these guys I learned so much more about it. Camilo sent me a list intially and I was like “Whoa! This is whole other ball of wax!” It was really incredible to go down that rabbit hole and trying to use that to tell the emotional story of the film.

    Eric Vespe: Music is emotion in movies. Your Up score is a perfect example. At the beginning of that film your music is the dialogue for Carl's life story. Maybe you guys can talk about shouldering that responsibility in a movie like this. You have hundreds, if not thousands, of people working here at Pixar to bring these characters to life, but ultimately if the score is jarring it can derail all that work they've done. Not to put more pressure on you guys...

    Michael Giacchino: The emotion is the number one thing in the back of my mind. Always. A film like this is so tricky because you could easily just put music everywhere. You could not care about throwing in source or score and let them bleed into each other, hoping no one would notice, but that's not what we wanted.

    One of my things talking with Adrian (Molina) and Lee (Unkrich) was saying that as important as figuring out where you want music is it's just as important to figure out where you don't. You want music, when it's there, to mean something, to have something to say. If it's just talking all the time it's like that person you get into a conversation with at a party that you just can not get away from and just won't shut up. So many movies do that and it's just like constant wallpaper.

    It was about how do we balance these three ideas: song, source and score, and get that to tell the story in a proper story in the same way you would if it was just score.

    Eric Vespe: You also want to give it personality, too, I bet. A lot of times that comes from happy accidents. How open were you guys to that?

    Germaine Franco: Totally open. That's the only way to be on a project like this, or any project. You have to keep experimenting. By experimenting you find what you're looking for. Sometimes you try four or five different versions and the first one is the best, but you only know that because you tried the other ways. That's one of the things that I learned from working with the Pixar team. Don't be afraid to try things. You don't have to make it a huge effort and try to make it perfect. Just see. Does that idea work? Oh, it doesn't. Here's another idea. Not having a preconceived notion of what the outcome has to be.

    In Mexico that was what was so beautiful. He were were sitting in a room with a lot of musicians, giving them charts of all these things. I didn't know if they would be able to play it, but I thought “let's find a way for them to engage with the music.” There's some source music that I think came out really beautiful because of that.

    Michael Giacchino: Oh, yeah. It's amazing to listen to. When you write something you have it in your head what you want it to sound like and you're maybe writing it just on the piano and then Germaine does these beautiful arrangements of these tunes and the next thing you know they come back and you're like “Oh, my God! That really sounds like it just came out of the country, like it had been there forever! How does that happen?!?” It's a crazy, wonderful magic trick.


    Coco is in theaters now and now you can go see it knowing even more about the thought put behind the music. 

  • Some Developers Still Love Expansion Packs

    Good news gamers, not everybody out there wants to milk you with microtransactions forever. In fact, some developers are still firmly committed to the seemingly fading business model of expansion packs. One of those is Civilization and XCOM creator Firaxis, who says it's the way they love to deliver additional content to their players -- like the just-announced Civlization VI Expansion: Rise and Fall. 

    Speaking in a recent interview with Eurogamer, the expansion's director, Anton Strenger, said about the topic of microtransactions versus expansions: "I think with the recurring payments, there are many different ways in which that can be done. There are microtransactions, there are expansion packs and there's DLC. I would say that, yeah, everyone in the studio here at Firaxis: our love, our passion and our expertise are in expansion packs."

    He went on to talk about how with procedural games in particular, expansion packs afford them some unique opportunities as creators, especially when it comes to deep gameplay system tweaks. It's definitely a stark contrast to some other things we've been hearing lately, so it's nice to see that there are players in the industry wholly committed to giving players those kinds of meaningful content updates.

  • Is Nintendo Going to Make a Splash at The Game Awards?

    Does Nintendo know something we don't know about the upcoming Game Awards show? Ahead of the show's premiere next week, it looks like Nintendo is holding a giveaway via Twitter -- with 5 lucky recipients getting free passes to the ceremony. 

    While this could just be coincidence, this definitely has some wondering if this means Nintendo is planning on dropping some big news -- and maybe a trailer or two -- at the awards show. Considering there are hints we could be getting more than a dozen World Premiere trailers, with reveals of previously unconfirmed games likely to be in the mix -- it's definitely a possibility. 

    Or they could be, you know, just getting ready to celebrate all those awards they're likely to win between Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild. That's also a distinct possibility. Whatever the case, The Game Awards will air on December 7.

  • PlayStation Admits They Sometimes Announce Games Too Early

    Leading up to the reveal of Ghost of Tsushima at PlayStation's Paris Games Show conference, one of the big questions from many PS4 fans was what the heck developer Sucker Punch was even working on. Now that the cat's out of the bag, the folks at Sony are talking a little bit more about why they waited so long to reveal Sucker Punch's exciting new follow-up to inFamous. 

    In a new interview with GameSpot, PlayStation Worldwide Studios SVP Michael Denny said of the timing: "I think the right thing to do...and I think we're learning and a lot of publishers are learning ... there is a right time to announce games."

    He later went on to say: "In the past, I think it's fair to say sometimes we announced games too early. And this is such a great project for Sucker Punch. It's a game they've always really wanted to make themselves. And I think it's the right time to announce that, and they've been working on that game for a long time now. There is great [playable version of the game] already. So we're just excited to let everybody know about it."

    It's definitely interesting to see this trend starting to take root with more publishers these days. In the past, we were used to 3+ years of wait time for many games, but the recent trend seems to moving toward revealing a game within a year of release (Square Enix notwithstanding). It's nice to know Ghost of Tsushima is one of those already playable games we won't be waiting too long for. 

  • Microtransactions are now in Call of Duty: WW2

    We knew this was coming, and today's the day -- microtransactions have come to Call of Duty: World War 2

    You might remember that Sledgehammer Games delayed their implementation while it fixed issues with the game. But yeah, now they're here, ranging from bundles of 200-13,000 "Call of Duty Points." 

    How much are they? Well 200 points will cost you $2, all the way up to $100 for 13,000 points. And you use those points to get -- what else -- loot crates in multiplayer and in the zombies modes.  

  • Legendary Pokemon now available in Pokemon Go

    Heads up, Pokemon Go players -- the legendary bird Ho-Oh is now available in the game

    In a post on the official Pokemon Go website, the developer says that it's a reward for players catching more than 3 billion Pokemon during an event called the Global Catch Challenge. 

    The post states: "As a result of all your hard work, Ho-Oh is now appearing in Raid Battles at Gyms around the world until December 12, 2017. So, gather your friends and find a Legendary Raid near you!"

  • Prepare Yourselves! First Trailer For Avengers: Infinity War Hits Tomorrow!

    The wait is almost over, folks. Marvel announced that the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War debuts tomorrow! Hold on to your butts because it's all been leading up to this!

    There hasn't been an official announcement on time, but Good Morning America did say the trailer will debut during their show, which airs between 7 and 9am. I know I'm psyched.

    Marvel also dropped the new Teaser poster: 


    That should look a little familiar. All the Avengers posters have had the same motif, slightly tweaked to represent the movie it's advertising. Age of Ultron was all robotic and this one's purple as shit, which as we all know is Thanos' favorite color. 


    The culmination of a decade of record-breaking, industry-changing superhero cinema is almost here. Time to get excited, fellow nerds!

  • Square Enix Acknowledges Tomb Raider Goals Were Unrealistic

    Remember back in the day, when Square Enix first rebooted Tomb Raider and then they were disappointed that it "only" sold 3 and a half million copies, instead of something INSANE like 7 million? Well, so does Square Enix, and now they're acknowledging that wasn't too realistic. 

    In a new interview, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda admitted that maybe they'd set their sights just a tad too high. He told about their reflections on the Tomb Raider reboot: "It was immediately before the end of that fiscal year, in March, that Tomb Raider came out so we had very high expectations for that. Looking back on that now, I think the target we set for ourselves was extremely high."

    He went on to say: "I say this with the benefit of hindsight now, but at the time our numbers leading up to the release of Tomb Raider had been very poor and I think our people were probably banking on that and wondering how much it was going to help our final earnings. In the end, it didn't quite sell as much as we had anticipated."

    It's especially crazy to look at how both games in the reboot have performed -- 11 million in sales for 2013's Tomb Raider and 7 million for 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider -- which are huge hits by any stretch of the imagination. Hopefully they're setting their sights more realistically for the still-unannounced sequel, Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

    My Turkey Day was pretty chill. I invited Ellie to come hang with me and my mom. Ellie went all Thanksgiving on us and cooked an amazing meal! It was good food, good wine, and then I lost at Catan. Great day overall! I spent the rest of my time-off grinding out the new Assassin's Creed. It is highly addictive. 

  • More Master & Commander Movies? Yes, please!

    Welcome back! How was your Thanksgiving? Get into any arguments with racist grandparents? How much stuffing and gravy did you eat? That much?!? Oh, you! You're so crazy! 

    I spent most of my Thanksgiving finishing up as much of the Holiday Gift Guide as I could (click here to visit if you missed it). It's still a work in progress, but the massive Books section is going up very, very soon and Music is shortly behind it. We should have the full guide completely finished and posted in a couple of days, so stay tuned for that. 

    I'm taking a break from the Guide to share with you something that caught my eye on Twitter. Russell Crowe tweeted this interesting thing this morning: 

    "For the Aubrey Maturin lovers, I do hear whispers indeed that a second voyage is perhaps potentially pre-proposed a possibility. So O’Brian affectionate’s and aficionados, let know of your pleasure." 

    He's referring to a sequel to Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, which was a GREAT movie. Straight up. If you missed it, fix that immediately. It's a Napoleonic era war movie, but it's not at all stodgy. In fact it plays more like a thriller as French and British naval captains play cat and mouse with each other on the high seas. 


    The movie was based on Patrick O'Brian's popular book series following Captain Jack Aubrey, who Crowe played. 

    Master and Commander was loved by critics and was a moderate success, but not a blockbuster, so a sequel was thought out of the question. The material is there, but studios don't tend to enjoy spending tons of money on a movie where they know they'll fight to just break even.

    Crowe's tweet doesn't mean too much. He could be trying to rally public support as a negotiation tactic in advance of a big pitch, but if he's right and Fox is open to the idea that could be great news, especially if they can get Peter Weir back in the director's chair. 

    Next year marks the 15th anniversary of this film's release, which is crazy. Maybe Crowe's aged out of the role, but I must admit I'd be excited to see this team get back together and make another classy, intense high-seas adventure.

  • New guns and modes in CoD: WW2 leaked

    Thanks to a leaker, we've got a sneak peek at some new guns and game modes in Call of Duty: WW2. The leak first came via a video from Youtuber MrJaRni, but was taken down. Thankfully, the video was reposted by other Youtubers and GameSpot has preserved a copy here.

    The video shows off the classic mode Gun Game, where you try to be the first to get a kill with every weapon in the game. And we also got a look at the Gewehr 43 and Sten weapons, but the video doesn't really show how either will work in the game. 

    No word yet from Activision or Sledgehammer but we assume that this stuff is planned for future DLC.  

  • Fancy Mod Brings Loot Boxes to... Doom

    If you thought 2016's Doom was the perfect marriage of classic Doom with modern AAA gaming, think again! Because someone else has just perfected this unholy union, thanks to... a new mod that puts loot boxes into the 1993 version of Doom. 

    And it basically works the way you'd see it in a modern big-budget game. The Doom Loot Box Mod's official description reads: "Weapons and powerups are removed from the map, and will sometimes be replaced with crates. All enemies have a small chance of dropping a key. Use a key to open a crate and get a random weapon or powerup."

    YouTuber StronkiTube took the mod for a test play, and found that it took him about 600 kills of grinding to find 10 keys. True to form, you CAN also purchase keys through a new marketplace added by the mod -- but trying to do so gives you a notice that the game's servers are offline forever. 

    Wow. It's so accurate it almost hurts. 

  • RIP Demon's Souls servers

    After 8 years, it's time to say goodbye to Demon's Souls. Atlus announced today that it will be shutting down the legendary game's servers early next year. 

    In a post titled "A Fond Farewell to Demon's Souls' Servers," developer Atlus says it's shutting down the games servers on Feb. 28th. The game will still be playable, but without online functionality like in-game messaging, player death locations, and World Tendency features. Oh yeah, and no more ganking people. 

    Atlus wrote: "It’s with mixed emotions we say goodbye to the service. Countless players have enjoyed Demon’s Souls and the functionality it introduced to players when such things were rarer. If you’ve played the game then you understand the feeling of dying multiple times in the span of 10 minutes or dealing with a boss fight so difficult that it took you a week just to figure out the best way to attack. The unforgiving nature of the game has provided countless enjoyable moments of frustration and anger, but also the elation felt from beating something so challenging. This difficulty and grit helped pave the way for even more punishing games such as its spiritual successor Dark Souls, the 2017 hit Nioh, and the landmark PS4 title, Bloodborne."

    If you don't remember, Demon's Souls was created by director Hidetaka Miyazaki and released back in 2009 for the Playstation 3. It became a surprise hit, winning some Game of the Year honors and spawning its own genre of brutally tough games, including Dark Souls 1, 2 and 3, and Bloodborne. 

  • Shhh shhh shhhh - it's Christmas

    So last week, @RTcastMichael shared a story with me about @IowaHawkins and their interaction during setup for some broadcast show. 

    It was time to get ready to shoot the next show, which would be airing after Turkey Day, and Cody (IowaHawkins) is one of the lighting guys. He was going around, doing his thing and making things illuminate. Illumination included pulling out Christmas lights and other set stuff. 

    Apparently, every time someone would say, "But, Cody, Thanksgiving hasn't even happened yet!" or something along those lines he would just hold a finger up to his lips (or theirs, if they were within touching distance) and respond like so: 

    "Nu-nu-no-no," he says, "Just Christmas," he finishes in a whisper and a jolly grin. 

    I've taken it upon myself to inflict my house with holiday spirit and cheer - some of it prior to Thursday's Turkey feast. And every time Michael (RTcastMichael) would tell me it's not time yet, I was able to respond with that exact sentiment from Cody.

    Because, you know. IT'S FUCKING CHIRSTMAS NOW, OKAY?

    So, here's a photo of some of that cheer. I made the wreath, decorated the hell out of a tiny tree, and I also made the weird Russian/Scandinavian Christmas Gnome. His name is Petyr.


  • Anger and Madness

    We all need to get better as fans of things. On last week's podcast, I said I liked Justice League, but I guess I didn't like ENOUGH for some people. I've been getting blasted on social media for daring to criticize the portrayal of Superman in the movie. I was actually way more critical of the Flash, but OK.

    Plus it's always oddly disappointing to get blasted by someone who has a cartoon avatar. I make cartoons as part of my living, but when someone is just furious on the internet and they choose to represent themselves with a picture of a cartoon character -- it's really hard to take it seriously.

    Thought today would be a great day to do my first post. I've been a member of the site for just over a year, but have been a huge fan of Rooster Teeth since forever. So you can imagine how ecstatic I was when I was given a chance to join this team of creative and wickedly talented people! 

    So, I wanted to take a second to say that I'm thankful and honored to be spending this Thanksgiving as a member of the Rooster Teeth community. I'm grateful for my new coworkers, new opportunities, and for the great community that's makes all of this possible.

I feel very fortunate having friends like Barb that aren't weirded out when I ask them to put on a helmet in a dark room, hold lights up to their face and let me point a camera at them. This famous scene from 2001: A Space Odyssey has been something I've been wanting to try recreating since I was a much younger boy. Here are three of my favorites from this shoot.     Among the exciting hires we have made recently is a gentleman named Eric Vespe, who is a longtime friend and for years was the primary editorial voice behind one of the worlds oldest entertainment sites.

    One of the things that Eric is known for is his extensive Holiday Gift Guide for people who love movies, comics and video games. I’ve mentioned the guide many times on social media (especially when he was kind enough to include RvB boxsets). I’m proud to say that Eric’s 2017 gift guide will be debuting on RT this week.

    I also think it’s important to disclose that the Guide has always been supported by retail affiliate links. This is not something we have widely implemented previously at RT but I think it’s important for us to find seamless ways to support new content that don’t impact the community. Nonetheless it’s important that we be transparent when trying these things.

  • Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

    Well....for those of you in The States at least.

    Let me take a quick sec to introduce myself as this is my first post....I head up Human Resources & Facilities for Rooster Teeth, which is kick-ass job!  Beyond work, I have a love for sports, music, bourbon, beer, cooking, smoking meat on my Big Green Egg and above all my family.  I'll try to post regularly and share more about all of these things!

    For today, this is all about Thanksgiving!  Is there any better holiday?  It hits all my high marks with spending time with family & friends, watching football, cooking like mad, and sharing drinks the entire time!  On this years list of to-do's is smoking a turkey, making some incredible sides, watching my Arizona Wildcats basketball team tip off tonight, plenty of football tomorrow and hanging with family and friends through it all.

    I'll try to post some pics next time.  Until then, if any of you have Thanksgiving traditions or awesome food & drink recipes you want to share, send them my way.

    Hey, everyone. 

    Happy Thanksgiving to our U.S. community! To the rest of the world, enjoy your Thursday while we stuff our fat, dumb American faces and shop for cheap electronics. Anyway, before I get out of here for the long weekend I wanted to drop a note with a few updates on Double Gold membership and the RT Box. It’s been awhile since my last update, but we recently sent out a survey that many of you guys eagerly responded to (thank you so much for that, it helps more than you know) and I want to address a few things that were mentioned:

    Overall, you guys seem to really like what we’re doing with the RT Box. I think the product we ship each month has improved in both quality and design, and I’m really excited about something new we’ll be starting with the December box, and for each box moving forward (you ready to collect some cool and exclusive shit?) That said, we still don’t do a very good job at shipping the box out on time each month. Coordinating a bunch of product, getting it into a box and off to your house is a pretty big challenge, and we know we have to do better. Starting next year we’re going to be making some BIG changes that’ll make better use of the small team we have here, and also improve the value and quality of each RT Box. Stay tuned - we should have the  full details before Christmas.

    Another thing we’ve learned since launching Double Gold membership is that the monthly Q&A is not popular. We’ve decided that the time and effort it takes for Chelsea and the folks involved each month to put together is not something many people take advantage of, and therefore, we’ve decided to cancel those moving forward. We look forward to brainstorming some other perks to add in its absence.

    That’s  it for now. One last thing though - if you were a Double Gold member and you cancelled, hit me up with a message or leave a comment and let me know why. We’re trying to learn and do better, so any feedback you have is welcome.

    This week's Top 10 came pretty close to home (see attached photo)*

    10 - Hulkbuster - I'd love to have an in-depth conversation about Avengers: Age of Ultron. Until that day comes, let's all just remember it could be the last time we see "the classic" or "original" MCU Avengers together. While I've always liked Age of Ultron, I think it will become more liked as we dive further into the MCU. This concludes my nerd rant. 
    9 - Anti-Transformer - I hate the Transformers movies so much you might as well call me an Anti-Transformer! 
    8 - Iron-Spider - What a cool suit. What a cool run of comics. Love the Iron Spider.
    7 - Mystic - This is in fact the Iron Man 4 I never knew I wanted. 
    6 - Extremis - I always get the Extremis armor and the Bleeding Edge armor confused. Anyone else?

    3 - Phoenix Buster - I wasn't very interested in the next X-Men/Phoenix movie coming out but now I am thoroughly disinterested in a Phoenix Buster-less X-Men/Phoenix movie. 
    2 - Endo-Sym - Finally! I'm IN a Top 10. (I'm the one sliming Caiti)
    1 - War Machine/Satellite - "Crazy" really is a good word for this suit. 
    11 - Iron Squirrel - With each passing day I feel more convinced that the world needs a live action Squirrel Girl. Hurry up, New Warriors!
