I've loved FFVII since the moment I first played it, but I've lost a lot of faith and respect for Square-Enix in the last decade or so due to the number of over-hyped, poorly conceived/developed games they've put out and stringing fans along with vague promises on games that may never actually see completion. Don't get me wrong, SquEnix has managed to put out some games that not only were good, but actually delivered on the hype in recent years, so they can still make great games. But overall it seems like all they really care about is the money, not giving gamers a great experience, much less actually listening to us.

That said, I'm remaining skeptical of FFVII, much the same as I'm doing with FFXV; I'll buy into them when they prove their worth it.

i am a square enix sheep and i am definitely a part of that group that's willing to throw money at them and i can't deny that. regarding the episodic nature of the game, i don't mind it because the game it needed to be spread out over multiple disks. if they're smart, they'll split it up at the same points in the remake (but it might be unlikely). the more plot and more exploration i can get out of my favorite game, i'll be happy

No thanks. I will pass on this. My memories of the real FFVII are good enough to carry me through the rest of my life. It is still one of the top ten games of my lifetime, and I don't need to play a remake with changes. Thanks for nothing, SquareEnix.

got a question, what makes episodic gaming a bad thing?

On paper, it doesn't seem like a bad thing. If done correctly, it can immerse players even further into the game world with the concept of REAL time flowing. It'll feel less immerse breaking when an NPC says "You've been gone too long" if you haven't played the game in 1 or 2 months rather than you spoke to that same NPC literally 5 seconds ago.

However, it's gotten a bad rap. Episodic games haven't been very trustworthy when it comes to release dates. Episode 1-3 could have come out with a 4 month wait in between episodes, but then 4 doesn't come out until almost a year. I believe that, in order for an episodic game to succeed, it must set a deadline and stick with it rather than push one or two episodes so far back that the sequel to the game is almost finished and a movie has been released.

So for sure it's going to be a PS4 exclusive? Or is it going to be multi-platform release? Because a PC release would be outstanding news to me.

The original game was 3 discs, was it not? How is that really different than making it episodic?

It was four discs I think. I see why they're doing this, and I personally approve. As long as they deliver.

Yeah, I remember it taking a year to switch disks and having to buy the game again and again. But let's face it, my dumb wiabu ass is going to buy up whatever dog shit they feed me.

Even though the original game had multiple discs, you were still able to buy it all at the same time and play through them one after another, weren't you? I guess people's problem with episodic is the possibility of waiting months for the next part of the game to even come out.

Personally, though, as long as it's fantastic, I don't really mind the idea of episodic.

How exactly is an episodic ARPG a "remake"?

I am ABSOLUTELY displeased about this. I have been an unwaveringly faithful fan of Square and Final Fantasy, well beyond most (I've bought every console based [Non-MMO] FF since VII) - but I can tell you that if I can't get every "part" of FF7 as soon as it is released all for no more than $60 total, I will never buy another Final Fantasy (or possibly even Square Enix) game in my life.

Then you don't have to. If you're truly against a raised price point in gaming or waiting to play another part of a game that you're "an unwaveringly faithful fan" of, then speak with your wallet when the game comes out. If only people started doing that, game companies wouldn't be turning towards episodic releases and DLC to squeeze out money from new releases.

That's precisely what I said I'll be doing, haha. And I'm also voicing my opinion about it anywhere I can in the hopes that enough people doing so will force them to realize it is a mistake.

"Final Fantasy VII is too big and needs to be spread across multiple..." is a phrase that Square just can't stop using. First discs, now games. Guys, it's the future now. I think we can handle a large game.

If The Witcher and every Bethesda game ever can come out without being cut up, why can't a linear game like FF7?

If it's 60 bucks per part, there's no way I'm getting it until the price has dropped a good ways. Love the idea of the FF7 remake, but not paying ~200 bucks for the damn thing

Watching Cloud navigate the environment looks very close to the movements from the XV demo. I know it's a different engine, but if they're emulating that movement, it'll be very nice. I was very impressed with the XV demo and how far Squeenix has come in action game play.

As for it being episodic, what interests me more is the comment about each episode providing "its own experience." I'm wondering if they're talking about tone or game play. Either way, the original was in 3 discs, which provided a nice kind of act separation. I kinda miss that. Even in modern games that do something similar, the chapters are considered more as progress markers and the entire game just flows from beginning to end. I guess the PS1-era RPGs were basically episodic to begin with, but like a Netflix season, we just got all the episodes at once. I distinctly remember getting a "man, I can't wait to see the next part" when changing discs, not unlike the wait between episodes on a weekly tv show.

My guess, part one is going to be about Midgar and exploring the giant metropolis of a city that we never got to do in the original. Next part is out in the open world of Gaia which would lead up to the incident that ended disk 1 of the game. Next part Highwind! That means "own experience" right? People are thinking that the gameplay will change or something. I think that will stay the same from part one to the finale.

Want as much quality as possible, like getting gems one at a time rather than a pile of garbage all at once. Maybe Funhaus shoud've done this one.

I would be ok with them releasing it in three parts. The original game has a three act structure with the end of each disc being the act out. If they followed that I think it would make sense.

  • AudileSnake4

Well the original VII was, what, 3 discs? Provided they are more capable than Telltale at keeping to a release schedule, I don't think it'll be too much of a negative as long as they keep the episode splits in line with the disc splits from the original

they'll sell it as a 3 part game at 60$~ a piece because they can. I'm just worried about the open world and if im going to have to change disk if i want to go back to Midgar and stuff.

I'll just be doing what I am doing with Starcraft 2, just wait until every part/episode/expansion/DLC is released, wait for the inevitable price drop bundle and get the single game experience for a single game price. I'm in no hurry.

However, the combat system change....yeesh. I get it, I do, but part of what I enjoyed most about the Final Fantasy games, prior to 11, was the group play dynamic. I'm not so worried about it being action based, just concerned that we'll get the FF XII and XIII detachment from the "unit" of characters because you only play as one (or one at a time). I understand focusing on one character at a time for story purposes, after all, even the original FFVII worked like that, but I enjoyed the RTS/RPG hybrid style that was the original 10 games.

Heck, you know what, even if it was turn based, I would probably be complaining that they restict the party size like before too. Give me FFX's character switch out and I'd be sold though. Trapped to a single person in combat, not what I enjoyed the series for.

Apparently you'll be able to freely switch between the characters during combat. Not quite the same as turn-based, but you can make it just as character-inclusive if you switch frequently I suppose!

Much rather they keep it true to the original, always making "improvements" that most people don't want. episodic idea is stupid as hell

im fairly ok with it being episodic, looking at what they showed on the at PSX, if they need to chunk it up, like the original game was spread across 3 disc's, then they can stuff as much goodness into each release.
