The saga of Star Wars: Battlefront II backlash continues, with a reddit AMA that goes about how you'd expect, an investigation into the game's microtransactions. Honestly, this could make a great crawl.

I think this is amusing because lots of that was done here the foundation was laid to some extent in SWTOR, it ruined the game for me. I've pretty much given up on Star wars franchise after the Episode 7's "hey lets do something so unbelievable it will make you forget all about Mediclorians and Jar Jar Binks, we'll have them shoot a giant laser across the galaxy that everyone can see with the naked eye, that goes billions of times faster than the the speed of light and can pinpoint destroy a star system and ships." I'm seeing too much greed that they (EA and Disney) are ruining the Franchise and just sucking the fun out. But that's my opinion.

People are upset about the issue (even if it's not as bad as people are making it out to be, meaning you get credits far faster than the 40hr window) but what is upsetting to me is the lack of consistency outcry of this model used for other games.

They mention nba but R6 Siege comes to my mind. It is practically impossible to unlock any new operator unless you buy it with money. If people really are upset about these microtransactions then they need to be upset about every game that employs it.

I'm sure they'll eventually make the game's progression more reasonable, but I have no doubt that that was the plan all along. They intended to make it awful from the beginning, sweep up all the sweet sweet whale money, and then "fix" it later for everyone else. Aside from the backlash being a bit harsher than expected, I think it'll largely go according to plan. They'll just tone it down slightly for the next game so that it looks better by comparison.

The fact that they were so willing to de-value their own game's experience so badly to begin with is pretty disgraceful to everyone involved. Due to the IP and marketing, it'll make a crap-load of money for now, but I really don't see this strategy being sustainable long-term.

Generally speaking I don't have a problem with loot boxes, but I'm not going to pay full price for a game with loot boxes in it that contain anything other than cosmetic items. And they're selling a more expensive deluxe edition that upgrades all your classes right out of the box as well?  Here's the description from the official website itself:

"The Star Wars Battlefront II: Elite Trooper Deluxe Edition turns your troopers into the ultimate opponents. Every trooper class (Officer, Assault, Heavy, and Specialist) is upgraded, delivering superior firepower, deadly weapon modifications, and epic combat abilities."

I'm not saying it's the same as pay-to-win but it definitely gives someone an immediate advantage over others on launch day just for paying for it.  Is there going to be a season pass for this game too?  Actually I really don't care this is already enough for me to completely pass on this game based on principle.  Well maybe I'll give it a shot in a year or two when I can pick it up during a sale for like 75% or 80% off or something like that.

"Positive" vs. "I don't want to live on this planet anymore" shirts...

It doesn't matter what they said. It matters what they did. Actions over words. (Too bad that people are more interested in applying that mentality to game devs instead of politicians who say and do different things all of the time.)

What they did is purposely put something in a game that they feel people will pay for a chance to skip - hence the gambling issue. "We put this thing in our game that might suck, so you can pay to try to skip it."

Most everyone is rather certain that this is EA's decision. A lot of people think that DICE is getting dragged through the mud for it, essentially by EA. DICE might have better luck with saying "It's EA's fault," let EA close their shop, and start over developing games with someone else - though not Star Wars thanks to whatever deal EA managed to drag Disney into - or was this a deal made with Lucas pre-sale that Disney's stuck with?

The problem is that people are still going to buy it. I'll just watch some folks play the campaign, but Disney ain't getting my dime from this... but comparatively, it's just one dime against everyone else. It'll make enough bank for EA to consider it enough of a success to keep doing it. Commercial Darwinism is being overrun by superior numbers. Survival of the foolish. (Politics seems to be going the same way.)

I plan on steering clear of any EA titles going forward, because I don't want to pay twice for a game and that seems to be where they are heading now. On the flip side I have 3 friends that are already playing it and are happy with their experience so far.
