While the fact the physical sales have fallen, (compared to digital sales especially) and this is an update video on Destiny 2 sales, I feel like many of the Know videos lately including this one have had especially click-bait type thumbnails/titles.

It's a really stupid comparison designed to generate headlines and make people who aren't playing the game feel validated for their life choices.

My entire raid team bought digital this time around, after buying physical for the original destiny. The expansion support was clunky at best if you bought physical and with the ability to preinstall and play at 12:01 for the same price, it was almost a no brainer. With over 1.2 million concurrent players according to bungie i think its pretty clear that the dip in physical sales is more than being made up for by digital sales.

I bought it digitally and I know several of my friends did too. Digital sales should start being tracked, if only for news outlets to stop freaking the hell out over stupid shit like "Physical sales are plummeting! It's the end of gaming as we know it!" (or any variation of '[game] isn't selling, it's a failure'). I understand The Know is mostly just doing an update and highlighting the fact that one market has a huge difference from one release to the next, but they're also giving possible explanations and saying that it's only one market, not the entire world.

The fact that it is also coming to PC this time, might make some people (like myself) wait for the PC version instead. cant wait to play it! or actually I can, otherwise I would already be playing it on the Xbox or ps4 :P

I'm glad that The Know explains that there are a lot more factors involved and that the number that so many others are jumping on doesn't really say much of anything on its own. The other gaming news outlets that fail to mention the other factors either haven't evolved with the medium in my opinion or are chasing drama for clicks.

(I'm always one to doubt news that we're given after getting burned so many times by major news outlets. So, it pleases me greatly to see a news service that also vets their information rather than taking them at face value -- even if it's merely to say we don't have all the facts -- which is more than so many other news outlets will do.)

You can't really blame people for hesitating to buy Destiny 2 after they royally screwed over the more dedicated players with their shit DLC plans from the first game.

The only reason this would worry me in the slightest is if it could potentially affect their support for the game with expansions etc. I really don't want to see another ME:A happen given that they have been the last two games i've bought. That said having it up Sunday and have been playing the fuck out of it and I'm enjoying it as much as I ever did the previous game.

I think the lack of digital sales data has a lot to do with it.  That's just how people buy games now.  But also the fact that developers continue to not allow crossplay and even cross-saves in their games so I think a lot of people are waiting for the PC release.  I know I am because that's how I want to play the game.  I'm not going to purchase a console version and invest over a month's worth of time into it when I know that I'm just going to have to completely start over when PC releases.  Now if they at least allowed cross-saves then yeah I would be more than happy to purchase multiple copies of the game.  Hell over time I'm sure I would end up with all 3 versions because all of my friends are spread across all 3 platforms.  I just don't have the time to invest in each one from start to finish so I'm patiently waiting for PC.

I didn't even know that Destiny 2 came out. When I did, I wanted to get on PC but that won't be out until October 24th. After being strung along with the content of the first game I think I'll wait til December

Destiny 1 launched on September 9th., the second Tuesday that month. Schools were already in session. Destiny 2 launched the first day of school for a lot of people, including me. I put it off for a week. Four days may not seem like much but just with how the days fall this year, I'm guessing that at least contributed to it. I played D1 and all its expansions the day they launched and I still waited a week.

In addition, people could just be waiting a year to get all the expansions at a discount. Taken King and Rise of iron came with all the previous expansions. I'm sure they'll do it again. That or they're waiting for PC.

The problem is the price. Here in the EU it's a whopping 70 euro for the game and if you want to play the next few dlc's and want a season pass that's 99 EURO!!! A lot of people don't have that much money to spare.

Played D1 on console. I enjoyed it. Some of my best memories with friends in a game, which has been the trend with my relationship with Bungie through the Halo game and beyond. For D2, one of the attractions to the game has always been that MMO aspect, especially raid bosses PvE. A feature in games that has almost completely kept itself within PC gaming. While I can't say I speak for other PC gamers, I feel like the player base for PC after a pretty rock solid beta, if small, went over well and will be a large number of new players when it finally releases on Battle.net. (Quite glad it was small as I'm mostly glad to see how it preformed on PC before I dove into a poorly optimized game.) Overall, I'm excited. Sales won't get me down. I've already got 6 friends ready to tackle the raids on PC, and I couldn't care how sales go so long as my friends and I have the incredible times we've always had on Bungie games.

It looks exactly the same as number one and resets all progress from the first (non transferable) ... of course its shit

yeah, I think they shouldn't have made a destiny 2 in the first place. Usually when you launch an mmo you keep making expansions for THAT MMO. You don't make a second game and stop supporting the first one. I think people are indeed a bit mad that their progress has been reset and that they need to start over in a new game that kinda looks the same- ish.

@Vhoxz Yes but there would be no way to progress the story the way they wanted to. Cayde, Ikora, Zavala, the Speaker, etc. would all always be at the tower. The Traveler would always be there. Nothing would ever change. WoW could go on forever, but Destiny has a set 10-year story arc. It needs to take steps toward its final chapter.

@DavidtheWavid I don't know, with good stpry writers there's a lot you can do. It would maybe take a bit longer but I'm sure they could have pulled it off

Here's the big reason for a sequel. Technical hurdles. The game is using the same engine but significantly more optimized. There's been numerous interviews of Bungie devs explaining that simply moving a rock from one location to another would take almost a full day to completely render in the engine. They were also limited by the technical weakness of the previous gen consoles. The latest DLC of Destiny might not have included the last gen, but the software of the game was still restricted by the legacy of it

With the new engine, they've said it's infinitely more optimized and better to use which means they can do more with what goes into the game. They also no longer have to worry about the past gen holding them back in terms of updates, not just DLC

another thing is that making DLC for 10 years is only going to exponentially split the player base. It's tough to ask people to pay for the 2023 DLC for a 2014 game. Imagine if we were still buying DLC for Halo 3 or Gears of War 1. Only the most dedicated players would stick with it, while tons of new players are joining in on Destiny 2, the story is more engrained in the patrol missions, there are new characters and new places to find old characters, yadda yadda.

Plus you also didn't mention that before Destiny came out people had no idea what it was, and it was a Hype-Train of "An MMO!? From the guys who made Halo!? Sign me in!" - now it's "Oh, it's a sequel to Destiny... I didn't hear good things..." or "Meh, first one wasn't my bag..." so perhaps a lot of people who didn't get into Destiny originally (but bought it to try it) are just not buying in release week to make sure they don't get burned because it was only an expansion or two in when Destiny hit it's full stride. And are also they could be likely waiting for PC. :D
