MASS EFFECT Franchise on Ice, BioWare New IP Delayed

Game News: MASS EFFECT Franchise on Ice, BioWare New IP Delayed

The Mass Effect franchise has suffered the worst possible setback--being put on ice. That means no more Mass Effect games in the near future, following the backlash against the recently released Mass Effect: Andromeda. Plus, BioWare's new IP looks like it's being delayed to avoid a similar response.

I didn't like Andromeda much and not for any of the technical issues. There was loads of choices in game that just felt poor. Running away from gas like we've gone back in time 10 years to crash bandicoot, characters not being overly likable, the open world as a whole was boring (honestly who stopped when driving around to fight a ship that lands on your way past after the first few hours), the combat as a whole. I could go on, and I agree with a lot of comments that it's not the studios fault, it's bioware and ea's fault for giving what should be such a big franchise to a less experienced studio. The only big step forward for mass effect as a series was the 4 options (logical, emotional etc), everything else felt like more of a step to mass effect 1 ( the worst in the series) than the sequels.

I wouldn't mind too much if they didn't leave a subplot unresolved and tease another for DLC. Still, with those two plots open, it makes it more likely there'll be a second game. In like 10 years. I hope the people that never played it are happy. They brought this on the actual fans.

There is also at least some idea that DLC expansions may still happen for it.

TLDR; Games' publishers (and publishing divisions) are the biggest dicks in the industry; so big that their brains are shrivelled little walnuts due to the lack of blood.

This is probably EA's fault, if not then Bioware's... it is not the studio's fault; they would not have pushed for the release, it is always the publishers that are the dicks that insist on releasing unfinished games with unfinished art, engines and without proper testing, Alpha, Beta or consumer.

In light of this that the studio suffers because EA wanted to release an unfinished game and then complains when it gets bad scores is typical publisher bullshit and as much as anything is as much a power play on the part of EA/Bioware to keep devs in line and under the thumb as it is just being complete dicks.

It's weird but everyone seems to forget that EA used to be considered massive dicks, just like Ubisoft is these days... EA had to stop because it was destroying their business... apparently they haven't learned their lesson. Just a matter of time before Ubisoft learns and then forgets this lesson.

I'm just going to keep saying it, Mass Effect Andromeda was a good game.  The companions were all really interesting and well written, while the story was also captivating.  The gameplay was hundreds of times better than any of the previous games, and the multiplayer even made improvements on the already amazing multiplayer of Mass Effect 3.  In my opinion, the story of Andromeda was even better than any of the individual stories of the previous three games.  I mean, if you combine the entire trilogy, I don't think you could beat it.  However, I enjoyed the story of this game more than any of the single other games.

Gonna disagree with a few points, but overall I agree it distilled the best aspects of the trilogy while adding something valuable. SOME of the characters, I would even say most, were well-written, but Liam's entire backstory is "I don't have a backstory LOOK A JUNKY CAR want to watch movies?" while Cora is basically just Ashley but not racist. ME1's story was leagues ahead of anything else, and ME3's was pretty good despite the controversial ending. The synergy of the whole trilogy was way better than Andromeda, but any single game can't beat it IMO.

Fix the animation issues and a few glitches and the game was great. The Gameplay was amazing. People shitting on this game after their 1 hour review really need to give it more time. I'm not gonna say it matches the greatness of ME2 or ME3 but this game is far from the reviews saying trash it or sell it.

I hope they don't stop the franchise when theres nothing wrong with it beyond a few minor technical issues. Stupid minority complaining about a game they haven't even bought. The EA Access demo might have done the full game in which is sad.

I'm calling bs on this. Bioware kept going on the Dragon Age series after the poor reception of 2. And while I liked it, it was worse then Andromeda.

I don't know. I played through DA2 three times in a row. It was doing something right.

Though visiting that one cave 127 times in a month wasn't fun.

      @DavidtheWavid

Like I said, I liked DA2. But you can't deny that it was one of the worst received games Bioware's ever put out. The fact that it's dev cycle was like a third of what most AAA games get clearly hurt it, such as the reused environments or the fact that they kind of shoehorned Orsino as a boss when you side with the mages more or less because they felt the game needed more bosses. If they're willing to continue that franchise after the reception for that game, Mass Effect is probably safe, at least safeish.

@DarkTempler7 Well, many more people play Mass Effect than Dragon Age so the hate wasn't as well-known and the whole universe was left open and they spent an entire game and movie building up Cassandra, whereas the Milky Way plot is concluded as is the Andromeda one, as a whole. Dragon Age needed another game to really be a series. Mass Effect now has two (relatively-) complete story arcs.

I enjoyed andromeda. The combat was fast and fun, the companions were interesting, multiplayer is better than 3, and the story over all was cool. My biggest complaint was the ending. It just didn't feel EPIC likening ME 1 2 and 3 where you took down soveirn, or survived a suicide mission, or stoppedbthe reaper (or failing, didn't know that was possibnle till a little while ago). It just felt like they wanted to set up for Andromeda 2.

Probably not. But a sequel a few years down the road is more likely!

Andromeda was not bad enough to be a franchise killer :( Was really excited to see where the story was going and what was going on with my crew.

Well, it wasn't going to be a trilogy anyway, but DLC would have been nice. But what can be more franchise-killing than people who never played any of the games hating on the entire series because of one game's endings five years ago that function like the first one's?
