Game News: Playstation SLAMS Games as a Service

It seems like everyone's going the route of Games as a Service these days. But it sounds like Sony is taking a major stand against it for their PlayStation studios. What did the company have to say at PSX about GAAS... we really need a better acronym for that.

GAAS is a good acronym. Pronounced like gas or GAH!s.

Sony is going to change its tune. Mark my words that they'll have their own version of GAAS and claim that it's not.

We're talking about a company that placed rootkits on music CDs without telling anyone that placed spyware code on PCs that could circumvent all malware protection and all detection - immediately repurposed for malware from even more malicious sources - first denying it, then admitting it while claiming it was their right to do it without letting customers know that they were doing it. Initiating legal action is the only thing that made Sony provide a way to remove the rootkits, provide a warning that there were rootkits, and eventually stop the whole rootkit publishing after some teeth-pulling. Sony is not known for listening to anyone other than themselves. If you look as the exact words that they used, they left wiggle room to let their developers decide if they want to do it - which could be prompted by some prodding by Sony but we'd never hear it. I'll ask forgiveness for not taking Sony at its word.

They're going to create their own version of GAAS and say that it's not that even though it'll be exactly that. Those of us who have lived through Sony know how Sony thinks. GAAS is unpopular, but they want it. Oh, believe you me. That want it bad. They will try to find a way without admitting that they have it.

Nintendo is going towards the GAAS model but they’re nowhere close to EA, and given their blockbuster IPs I doubt they’ll make the full GAAS transition.

I'm more of an Xbox guy than a PlayStation guy, but damn if I don't love the Sony guy being so against games as a service.
