Star Citizen SUED BY CRYTEK!?

Game News: Star Citizen SUED BY CRYTEK!?

Star Citizen is a behemoth of a crowdfunded game, and that's the kind of thing that puts a target on your back. Now, Crytek, the creators of CryEngine (you know, the ones who couldn't afford to pay their employees for months) are suing Cloud Imperium for... not using them enough, not paying them enough, and not talking about them enough.

For the longest time, the first thing that popped up in Star Citizen was the CryTek engine logo. When they were starting up, they wouldn't shut up about CryTek being so great (even though it was the most unfriendly API that I could ever imagine of a game engine).

It was only after CryTek effectively abandoned their stuff to Amazon did they change it to Amazon's Lumberyard logo. Everything onward from there was on the "Lumberyard Fork" of the abandoned CryTek technology which was effectively starting as a snapshot of the iteration of the CryTek engine at the time of abandonment (and, while it's more friendly than before and seems to enjoy a larger user support group, it's still a beast to tame it for even simple games). CIG merely followed the technology from someone who stopped supporting it to someone who took ownership and continued to support it.

If anything, CryTek should talk to Amazon about this... but CIG is the softer target.

... and now CryTek decides to bite the hand that was helping them in the best way possible - using their engine until CryTek abandoned the fork CIG was using that Amazon was also using?

I'm just glad that CIG is going to extract all legal fees from CryTek if (more likely, when) CryTek loses.

(I still find Amazon Lumberyard to be an interesting choice in name. I could make several other puns about CryTek, but I'll leave it to The Know. They do it better.)
