Game News: DMCA EXTORTIONIST Drags YouTubers into Legal Battle

The developers of a Kickstarter game called Starr Mazer brought on well known chiptunes composer Alex Mauer to create the soundtrack. That sounds like a great idea! Unfortunately, it gets not-so-great when the composer decides you owe her more money and she decides to issue DMCA strikes against any YouTube video showing the game and using the music and threatens to kill their channels unless they complain about the developer.

Any sympathy I might have had for her is completely negated by how much misery she is putting on other people.

Um. She's crazy, and I don't mean in a "ha ha, bitches be crazy" way. Apparently she actually sent SidAlpha death threats over his reporting. Video is up on his YT.

They bought the game legally. The contract was cut and dry. Ex-post-facto restrictions should apply to DMCA and prevent retroactively making DMCA claims when the content was not under DMCA violation when created.

I understand artists getting fair compensation and support it, but this artist seems to be acting petty by the evidence that we can see and seems to be asking for compensation that was not in the agreement. The artist will have difficulty overcoming this bad impression in regards to future work now.

In my opinion, that artist's actions of attacking what seems to be a fair agreement hurts the plight of artists who have serious grievances through no fault of their own with truly unscrupulous clients. Mauer's selfish actions show that the artist doesn't care what effect this has on the fair-minded artists who make up the majority of video game musicians out there. This will make clients overprotective instead of cooperative with video game musicians.

Such a struggle with game devs made a union go on strike and, later, sued one of their own award-winning musicians, Austin Wintory, for working on an indie game project that should have been outside the union's jurisdiction during the strike. Despite the fact that the strike was mandated against the wishes of many of the video game musicians, it still affected the musicians' image in a bad way and strained relationships that were just fine previously. (The fact that the union seemed to prefer that their musicians starve instead of the musicians keep doing what they love and looking after themselves when working outside of the union should have made the union look bad, not the musicians.)

Alright, I have to ask this cause I just double checked my TV settings, are The Know videos now being rendered as interlaced? I see banding and ghosting (sorta) everywhere and it was the most noticeable with this video. My TV is set to 1080p and I only experience it with news updates, not AH or other RT groups. It's been bothering me for a couple days now but I wasn't sure cause I've been messing with some settings so I figured it was my end. It could still be but I find it hard to believe that it's only one category of videos and everything else, no matter the source, is perfectly fine. I'm not griping about it so much as double checking that it's not just me. Either way, I get my news so I don't particularly mind but I would prefer if it were progressive. Thanks for your hard work and I will continue watching.

As for the topic at hand, I wouldn't hire her in any capacity after a stunt like this. Whether I'd be on the side of having previously worked with her or catching wind of it after the fact, shit like this how you get blacklisted.

I have to agree that the (unofficial of course) blacklists will definitely start to include Alex Mauer after all of this... had it not blown up then she might have escaped that fate but at this point she is clearly just not wanting to fork out for a lawyer to sort the whole thing out - which should have been her first goto since she may well have had a case... at this point though there is no way she will be able to stand up in court to claims of acting in bad faith; generally considered a pretty serious faux pas when it comes to the law.

So basically no one is going to work with Alex Mauer ever again because of how vindictive and bat-shit crazy she is.
