I don't really mind private data being given to the authorities in criminal cases but they shouldn't be given the ability to do it as they please. The tech company should be the only ones that actually do the searching of private information (only when requested and given a good reason to) and then pass on anything that seems suspicious. My main issue is the gag order, the person who has had their personal data revealed should be contacted directly with a notification of what data has been given, when the data was given and why it was given (i.e. the authorities have to tell the person why they've been searched).

Dislike the fact that only 4% of requests to Microsoft were complied with... that suggests that intelligence and police requests are as much as 96% spurious!?! That's insane... how much fishing are US policing agencies allowed... in the UK they were very much discouraged from doing that at all - i.e. not allowed to use evidence obtained in that way in court or as leads to other potential evidence.

Would prefer more transparency but would prefer even more of those requests being blocked for being irrelevant and / or spurious (though the case in this story seems legit - unlike in many stories I've heard). Private, personal data should be just that, personal and private and it being handed out to thousands of people (whether employed in law enforcement or not) makes it neither and a real risk to an individuals health and well-being, both physical and financial (never mind social and mental).
