First off, the Tiffany Aching series of books are exceptional. They never don't deserve a shout-out.

Main point: Gus introduced me to a YouTuber a few years back who was doing a no-heal permadeath run of Fallout New Vegas. He recently started a no bows/crossbows Skyrim series to force himself to play without his usual crutches. Completely changes his experience, character and the organic story. His character ends up as a conjurer with a burly meat-shield and potential love interest constantly on the hunt for fresh human souls. That wasn't a choice, but as a result of the narrative the new play style built. Heartily recommend both his channel and revisiting Skyrim in a similar way.

You joke about Xcom cheating to kill your characters. But it actually does. To the point that there's a term for one of the ways it does so. They absolutely cheat and will move to flank you in a 'patrol' when it's nowhere near being on their normal patrol route. And have an unactivated pod 'patrol' into the area during a fight, even if their patrol route was way, way, off somewhere else.

FTL is a great strategy game, and is pretty much on par with Xcom on the difficulty spectrum.

But the spaceship explorer genre is somewhat of a come back, but the last great game imo was Freelancer.

Another thing speaking of MMOs. Guild Wars 2 is getting it's 2nd expansion next week. It is still thriving to a player who hops on and plays it, has a fun world, fun characters and a story that updates monthly with what they call Living World that leads up to things such as right now, this one is leading up to the expansion.

It isn't a perfect MMO but I'm still enjoying the world of it myself. It isn't for everyone, but it is at least a fun world and story to go through.

Does anyone else think the name Pewdiepie sounds like a bad MLP OC? I've thought this for years but even more so it makes me think that further with him being in the news more and more.

The DMCA issue is that the developer's tweets show that they intend to punish PDP with DMCA takedowns, their own and encouraging everyone else to do the same. The DMCA services was intended to protect, not punish. Alex Mauer used the DMCA to punish someone via a bunch of other people.

Also, their website implies that Let's Plays are fine. The fact that they used the DMCA to punish PDP for another game shows that their intent is less about protecting their own property or association with PDP.

PDP's apology video essentially said everything I had mentioned about him. It doesn't sway my opinion of him, though. Like Ashley said, his behavior would have to change, and this behavior has been on-going. (Haven't liked his format, before, and from what I gather, it's only gotten further from my preference for presentation. A change in behavior doesn't mean his format will become enjoyable for me.)

Because I grew up with the original King's Quest series, I followed this one closely. A King's Quest project was being done by TellTale, but it was returned to Sierra. Fuzzy details only -- assumed to be a King's Quest sequel. Then, The Odd Gentlemen were tapped by Sierra and a King's Quest is soon released. Perhaps, there's good reason it's like a TTG, but that's conjecture. (It's also a format that works well for those old adventure games so it also just makes sense for it to be like that anyway.) King's Quest (2015) is a parallel story that starts before "Quest for the Crown" and ends far after "The Princeless Bride" (as nobody really knows how "canon" Mask of Eternity is) and is technically a sequel.

If you grew up with King's Quest, I highly recommend KQ2015. If you did not, you'll probably find it hit-and-miss. The Odd Gentlemen seems to know what KQ was all about and managed to modernize it. Spoiler: It's a nice but sad goodbye to the series.

On an aside: Roger Wilco is my spirit animal.

On another aside: "The Two Guys from Andromeda", creators of Space Quest, are creating SpaceVenture. I've been following it, and I feel that they're sticking to an 80s format that won't fly well today.

I find this whole Let's Play argument so odd, because I grew up in the fanfiction part of the internet, which also had a lot of problems with copyright and take-downs.  And arguably, fanfiction is more creative than *ETA: a lot of* Let's Plays, since you largely have to write your own take on a story, rather than just reacting to what's in a game - but fanfic also never really reproduces what's in the original story, whereas Let's Plays often involve the graphics, gameplay and story elements that gamemakers probably would prefer people to buy a copy to have to see, making DMCA strikes slightly more appropriate in their cases.  The difference is that people don't monetise fanfic, nor would they expect to be able to - very occasionally, people who write fic might get scooped up to write licensed companion novels (in which case they have the license, officially), if they've written a very long stand-alone story they can sometimes 'file off the serial numbers' (getting rid of any specific references to someone else's universe) and publish it as an original novel, they might offer to write fic in exchange for donations to charity, or they might offer to write 'something' in exchange for a personal donation - not a specific offshoot of a licensed work.  That's it.

And money is a big part of this Pewdiepie issue - the Campo Santo director specifically said that he didn't want his work to continue helping making Pewdiepie a millionaire.  It's not just a matter of not wanting his work associated with Pewdiepie, as long as that video stayed up and there was ad revenue attached to it, and it was still getting even some views, it was going to add to Pewdiepie's income, which the director clearly didn't want to help do.  So the question is then not just: should people be able to stream or make videos of games (which I don't think you're really going to able to stop people doing, completely), but should they be able to make money off it?  Thinking about it in terms of the fanfiction side of things, it's kind of odd that people really expect to be able to.  Writing fic (like writing anything) is hard work, and people often do it because of a passion for the source material, and because they have original ideas inspired by the ideas in their favourite book/show/whatever, very much like Let's Plays, and a strong fanfiction scene can often get people into a book/show/whatever that they otherwise wouldn't have been interested in, never mind paid for - but the attitudes to being able to monetise it are so different.  And the mod community is obviously a relevant comparison too.  I don't know.  I find it very interesting.  I'll be interested to see where things with Let's Plays go after this situation.  I don't think it will be 'terrifying' like Adam thinks - people will still be able to write their own reviews and opinions and criticisms of a game, just (at worst) without footage.

Anyway.  On the topic of point-and-click adventures, Thimbleweed Park got released recently by someone of the old big names of the genre, and got pretty good reviews.  I've been meaning to check it out, and anyone else interested in the genre can take a look.  Also, I love Ashley's new Vita-love.  It's such a niche piece of hardware, but I love it so much, and it keeps plugging away when everyone says it's dead, like a zombie.  XCOM: Enemy Unknown is also available on there, too (with much, much worse graphics, but portable) ;)

not a genre as such but id love to see a crazy taxi type game (needs good music i need to bring out the dreamcast to play it as 360 version has the wrong music) and project gotham/metropolis street racer forza horizon is close enough to make mew want a return to these games esp pgr where you got rewarded for driving the cruddiest cars as long as you could and effectively penalised for driving better cars (also unlockables like a lawn mower and a bus)

This DMCA issue with Campo Santo and Pewdiepie is a non-issue. NerdCubed had a whole thing that was similar to this, where he made a video, the devs fixed the problems he talked about, and threatened to DMCA his video. You cannot DMCA retroactively. Watch his video on it:

If you think about it, point and click games have sort of been reborn in the Telltale style games cause they're really simple and you just wander around finding things to click on. It's obviously a bit more advanced, but it's still the main spirit of those style of games.

I am still waiting for a console release of Valkyria Chronicles 2&3. For people who do not know, Valkyria Chronicles is basically, XCOM battle gameplay, set in a pseudo-WW2. It is way more character focused than XCOM (each squadmate has their own personality), and has an anime art style. If you have a PS3/4, or PC that would be a far easier introduction to that style of game than XCOM.

The "cultural differences" defense is complete horseshit, racism wasn't developed by americans, europe is just as racist as we are and that word is just as well known. Maybe completely unused in small town sweden where felix was raised but he's been making millions, traveling the world and has lived in the UK for a while now. He's 9 years older than me. There is no excuse.

Agreed.  I'm from the UK, and everyone knows that's a word you don't say.  If he's hanging out in a community that doesn't find that word that charged or significant, it's because it's a community that doesn't find racism/black people that significant.

The FMV games I loved back in the day were point and click adventures, usually mysteries. Phantasmagoria, Ripper, Black Dahlia, the Tex Murphy Games. They actually did a new Tex Murphy game 3-4 years ago, and it was a lot of fun.

When the 11 Little Roosters Trailer came out in 2015, I actually wondered if it was going to be modeled off one of those old games, since Ryan was only a voice over. So the audience would have to figure out the mystery with him as the 'player character'.

And there's your RT FMV game answer. Make 12 Little Roosters, and make it an FMV game, VR or not. : D

A game genre I would like to return, though I don't think it was ever a really big one, is the co-op drop in/out RPG, ala Secret of Mana. Now, I believe Secret of Mana is getting a remake for the Vita (though, I would love it on the Switch), but if there was a way to play either couch co-op or online, that would be awesome.

One piece of criticism I have with the production of this particular show is that the intro destroys the image quality for a few seconds. I have a couple ideas that might help, but for the most part I would simply suggest not flashing through so many images with fine details so quickly. Less movement/fewer changes helps preserve details for subsequent frames. There are other things you can do, but that's the easiest solution.

My issue with the Campo Santo-PewDiePie thing is that Campo Santo is weaponizing DMCA for actions not committed in their game and that is not acceptable, regardless of how despicable someone is. That is a direct threat to all videogame lets plays, and all an abuse of DMCA. I will never buy a Campo Santo game again due to this abuse.

How is it abuse? From their POV they do not want to be associated with someone who uses that sort of language. It is their game and their IP.

      D.M.C.A.- Digital. Millenium. Copyright. Act.

Look it up on Wikipedia. The paragraph sentence includes:

"It criminalizes production and dissemination of technology, devices, or services intended to circumvent measures (DRM) that control access to copyrighted works."

A let's play video on Youtube does not do this.

"It also criminalizes the act of circumventing an access control, whether or not there is actual infringement of copyright itself."

Again, it does not do this.

"In addition, the DMCA heightens the penalties for copyright infringement on the Internet."

The only relevance this has is if infringement is shown...

TLDR; Campo Santo is ABUSING the DMCA. End. Of. Story.

P.S. The biggest issue here is really that a millionaire is so selfish as to have this huge impact on the entire let's play industry and can't be bothered hiring a lawyer to fight the DMCA strike... if PewDiePie can't be bothered why should anyone?!? Oh, wait, because they're not selfish fucks (offense entirely meant).
