For bad schemes, just think back to a lot of the earlier MGS games on Playstation. O being the confirmation button gets a little annoying, does tie back into the discussion with Nintendo, I suppose.

I'm suprise that the Wii-mote didn't come up with how much people hate motion controls

Good video, was interesting hearing about controllers and schemes! One thing about Golden Eye though, while it doesn't hold up well today (from everyone that's played its words, I've not played it myself) it was one of, if not the first game to do 2 things which have become conventional in gaming: The first was reloading, in FPS games up to this point, like DOOM on PC, you didn't have to reload, it's not something you think about nowadays really because it's out of the ordinary for a game to NOT have reloading.

The second thing was free camera movement, I'm not sure if Golden Eye was the first to do it, but it was definitely one of the first for FPS games. It sort of combined the free player movement of DOOM with the On The Rails style free aim (up and down as well), where it was one of the first FPS games with free aim, in the style of what we have today.

I also find it interesting the development story for Golden Eye, it was lead by someone who never lead a team before, and most people who worked on it had never worked on a game before. There's speculation that that's why it was so ambitious, if another team had worked on it, it might not have been set industry conventions, since a team that worked on previous games might have thought it was too ambitious.

Anyway, good video, Glitch Please is one of my favourite podcasts!

I gotta saw that the N64 controller might be the worst, but at least nintendo tried something new. The Xbox and PS controllers have been the same basic layout for years now, but Nintendo tried movement controls, then give you a damn ipad and then the decide to smash the two together for the switch.

    Ryan,
I think you can adjust the dead-zone of you Xbone Elite controller to deal with the straying problem. I did a similar thing with my controller’s left trigger when it started registering it as always ever-so-slightly pressed. I love that controller’s reprogramability.

I reeeally enjoyed this post-show episode. Physical controller layouts and in-game input configurations have always been an important issue on my mind in gaming. It still boggles my mind that console games don’t just all allow custom configurations. Half the reason I bought the Elite controller was for its reprogramability for Halo 5. As Alfrado noted, bumper jumper’s a big deal since it lets you jump and aim at the same time, but it’s still not quite what I want (I put it on left trigger).

Thumb-stick aiming aside, I think bad or locked button layouts have held controller-based gaming back a lot in comparison to PC gaming. I’ve used a controller to play TF2 on PC for several years now very successfully (with the exception of sniping), and the custom button layout and extreme look sensitivity that the PC allows the controller to have has played a big part of that success.

I am using a Razer keypad and a Naga Epic, and I can never go back! admitedly its abit of a hazzel to keybind every game to the keypad, but the comfort level of the keypad compaired to a standard keyboard is trough the roof! its also smaller so it fits better with my setup. The naga is just great for most games in my opinion altough 1-6 is the only buttons I use in every game 7-12 is only if the game requires that little extra.

@KnutErik Can I ask, with mice that have extra buttons like that, are they detected as buttons as the computer? (ie Mouse Button 5), or do you have to assign those extra buttons to something in software? (ie assigning it to W, so you're technically pressing W, but your pressing a mouse button)

I use a Naga as does Jack and you get use to it really fast. Just playing something like Minecraft is much nicer though I will agree that I use mostly 1-6. The last row is overkill but I could see uses in MMOs (which I never play).

I do the same, 1-6 is really nice, In MOBA games aswell, In league of legends I use 1-4 for spells 5-6 for summoner abilities and then CTRL 1-6 for the diffrent inventory slots!

Love the mice with 12 buttons on the side.  I makes using my computer so much faster and more efficient.

You get use to hitting the button you want.

The culprit with the A/B switch is Sony, who has the same layout as Nintendo in asia (O to select, X to cancel), but they changed that for the rest of the world. Microsoft made everything worse by trying to mix both ABXY and the Sony layout. Still, Microsoft and Nintendo are at least consistent around the world, switching from a japanese ps3 to an american ps4 was not pleasant as the layout is hardcoded into the system.

Ultimately, it's not that big of a deal, but I wish they just let you pick the layout.

I think Adam won my question, that chainsaw controller is scarier than anything in the resident evil franchise
