Know Your Thrones: TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING? - KNOW YOUR THRONES, the Game of Thrones Nerdalong for Season 7 Episode 7

Game of Thrones is over for at least a year, probably more from what we're hearing. We've watched the season finale, gotten angry, laughed, cried, and have a lot to say about the whole thing.
WARNING: We recorded this higher quality version when we streamed but it still dropped frames on occasion (especially the end) so if that kind of thing bothers you we highly recommend pulling up pictures of cats in a new tab to watch while you listen to this instead.

I'm annoyed that they didn't talk about the Azor Ahai or the Lord Light. The "Plot Armor" is essentially "God Armor" because he has a purpose each of these characters. Beric Dondarrion has been brought back so many times to plant the seed of curiosity in the Hound in order for him to have a reason to follow the Brotherhood after S06. Jon has already been brought back from the dead before, so its not inconceivable for him to be protect via some divine intervention (Will admit, bit of a stretch there). One of the main characters is Azor Ahai and the rest are there to push (by possibly dying at the right moment) whoever it is to defeat the Night King.

Also, as Jon has pointed out before with character arcs in the past, all of the main character's arcs at this point is dealing with the army of the dead in some fashion: Jon and Danny joining together to fight the Night King, The North having a reconciliation with the Mad King's daughter, Jaime realizing Cersi is batshit crazy and continue to grow into somewhat of a decent person, and Cersi losing all she has cause she's batshit crazy.

Will agree (as much as i don't want to) Tormund should have died and Brann has to die, or at least lose his powers, but that would feel cheap.

TL;DR Main cast has Divine Protection until usefulness is fufilled

I feel like it's going to be an episode for Cleganbowl, an episode for the eventual fight between Jamie and Brianne, an episode for the death of the dragons, an episode for the marriage of Jon and Dany, an episode where Arya kills Cersys, one for the fight Nightking versus whoever (Jon? Dany? Bran? Jamie? Gendry???), and finally the final will be the birth of the new king.

I'm a little bit surprised that there was no talk of Azor Ahai or any of the prophecies to be fulfilled.  That's all my group of nerds has been able to talk about since this season really got underway.  Maybe that's on me for not having seen any of the rest of their post show talks and they discussed the prophecies and threw them out as not having any affect on the show, but that might be the one thing the show still has up its sleeve for Season 8 that the showrunners haven't been completely ham-handed about.

I'm flabbergasted anyone thinks Jon Snow could die, and I just hope they aren't too disappointed in the show at large/chalk it up to more pure fan service if he doesn't.

At the pace s07 went, I wouldn't be surprised if Night King was already at King's Landing in the opening scene of s08. I probably wouldn't mind either, lets see what he's about and where he's headed.

I'm with Burnie and Jon the quality of the story telling has suffered. Theres been way too much insta-gratification this season. They needed more in between "calm before the storm" moments so there's time for a breather here and there. The expedition north should've been more than one episode. This way Danys last minute rescue and Viserions death/resurrection would've made for a better payoff.

    Examples:

Instead of showing all the damn dead pull Viserion's body up and outta the water and the NK approach him, ,which makes us immediately know whats about to happen. They should've fade in from an aerial view angle, but very closely though so you don't know what your looking at till the end. While panning up Viserions backside toward his head, viewers maybe start to realize what they're looking at and that he's outta the water. Then once you get to his head come down over one of the the shut eyes to see it open blue with the NKs reflection. Approaching the resurrection this way would have made it move a nice surprise.

Also if they'd never shown Gendry making it to Eastwatch and her leaving DS to rescue them. If you dont see Gendry making it to EW and Dany leaving DS and arriving BtW 7 mins later in real time, you cant complain about pacing and travel time.

The comment from show runners after S06 wrapped up saying that there's "enough story for two shortened seasons" was complete BS. S07 could have clearly been 10 episodes, it could have even started and an ended in the same places but with better pacing and more exposition.

I guess they blew through their budget with all those dragon scenes though, ergo shortened season... ;<

You mention Dany being pregnant, I think they're trying to check off the boxes to make Jon as much a Promised Prince candidate as she is. Now he will be waking dragons from stone if Dany is supposed to be barren and Targaryens have the blood of dragons.

As for if Ned knew about the marriage, the only problem is he went to Gendry as someone more legitimate than Joffrey. Once Robert was killed Jon should've known if Ned intended to take power from the Lannisters, more likely he thinks Jon is a bastard, but knows his sister wasn't raped.

Dragons, magic, zombies, and gods that resurrect people is fine, but miraculous saves in battles (which have happened many many times in recorded history), is unacceptable now. Guys just treat this like a show and not like an isolated universe in which rules of budget and tons of plots wrapping up don't apply. When your expectations aren't met, it's probably because you have to realize that a fan's expectations will ALWAYS outweigh the technical constraints and just enjoy the best show in years. Good podcast but jesus, more nerding out, less foo-foo critical speak.

To amend this, I realize you guys have been in the industry for years and you literally feed yourselves by being critical of, and creating content. Your perspective will always be more critical than someone who only sees media as a fun hobby, like most people in the world. I guess I was just upset because this felt more preachy and like a critical review, whereas it usually just feels like friends coming together to be nerds and laugh about boobs and glorious battles. Perhaps a little Blaine or Mika might have helped, because they tend to have a naturally bright and positive disposition. Still an overall good podcast series, but please keep this thing casual and low-maintenance, that's at least why I personally loved watching every episode.

The problem with the miraculous saves isn't necessarily about the saves, but instead about the death teasing. They mentioned Jon going below the water. He should have been dead without a doubt. The writers fail to show how Jon escaped the wights, got back to the surface, and got out. Then, even after he got out, he still was facing the army of the undead. Again, here was a situation where there was no hope of escape. Then out of the blue, Jon's uncle comes riding up on a horse to sacrifice himself to save Jon. There is no way of him knowing Jon was there or in trouble. The only explanation would be that he saw the dragons flying and followed them out of curiosity. But even then it was way too convenient of a save. And even after Jon gets away on the horse, he should have died from hypothermia. He was out on the frozen lake for a least 12 hours, he was submerged into freezing waters, rode a horse with the freezing air blowing against him...He should have died but was absolutely fine. They even show his clothing being broken off him because it was frozen solid but he didn't show any damage from that event.

Another case of death teasing was Jamie riding towards Dany and her dragon. He was saved last minute by Bron but was thrown into a very deep lake in full armor. Surely he would have drown being that deep in the water and being pulled down by the weight of his armor. But the opening scene of the next episode is Bron and Jamie (still in full armor) about a mile from the point that they fell in, on the bank perfectly fine. That is so incredibly unbelievable....basically impossible.

It just feels like the writers want to continue the feel of GoT by putting the characters in mortal danger and making you think they are dead or going to die, but ruin it by impossibly saving them at the last second.

Let's not forget the only reason he's here is because a GOD brought him back from the dead due a magic priestess who disguises her age with an amulet said a prayer. The same priestess who gave birth to a demon to kill a major character. Clearly Jon and those who associate with him have a higher purpose and the conventional laws of wisdom don't apply here. Again, saying it's too unrealistic ignores the fact that this is a fictional universe and there are no rules that must be followed, clearly.

When talking of spin-offs, I'd REALLY love if they turned the Telltale Game into a series (or mini-series), that follows House Forrester, and Gared. One of the few games I've 100% completed as I loved it.

I get what they are saying about pacing but I feel like it was set up for these last 2 seasons to be at 200% craziness. I've personally loved this season despite there being 2-3 moments of "really?".

I personally liked this season more than the last few. I found the pacing to be more entertaining and spent more time establishing where the characters need to be in order for them to wrap up the story. Six seasons of build up and this one just got straight to the point. I look forward to it finally wrapping up.
