I get the feeling that Microsoft just has a lot more to gain from crossplay than anyone else, and that the others, namely Sony, are concerned about users switching to microsoft after determining that microsoft devices perform better in crossplay environments. And who knows, I wouldn't be surprised if they're right. Microsoft already has PCs and their big fancy new Onyx, they're ready and waiting to be compared to.

Another concern might be that, since microsoft is the one setting up the framework, they might have some sort of built-in or eventual advantage planned (like with those accusations a while back about WIndows 10 eventually making Steam worse, which, as far as I know still goes unfounded). It's all speculation of course, and may or may not even be in the realm of possibilities at this point.

Anyways, "it's 2017" means nothing. We have the technology, but not everyone has the incentive to do the things we want.

They're probably going to judge Crossplay via Microsoft's Minecraft upcoming "Better Together" update -- crossplay with Windows 10 (including VR), XBox One [x/s], Nintendo Switch, Android (including Samsung VR), iOS, Windows Phone, FireTV, and more. One would think that if this is something that they want, they'd advertise the Better Together update more. (They even give you a free Windows 10 Minecraft Key if you have the licensed Java edition, but surprisingly few people know that.) They'll even be dropping the "_____ Edition" subtitle from all of those crossplay platforms. It will simply be "Minecraft" (versus the original which will continue to bear the "Java Edition" subtitle). One would think Microsoft would try to get this information out there more.
