I've been watching red vs blue since the end of 03 when I was 12, now looking back this show has advanced so much in terms of animation, look and feel that it almost brings a tear to my eye.

I wonder if we'll ever get to see RWBY with motion capture?

They technically do though. They showed Jessica Nigri in those suits and they capped her movements.

If you watch some of the older behind the scene stuff on RWBY. Monty talks about how he uses mocap in RWBY more for stuff like Head gestures, and more subtle things of that nature. I also think RWBY fight scenes isn't really something to mocap (much) because you can't really mocap someone doing all the ridiculous, awesome, moves they do. Of course, I'm not an animator, so wtf do I know? lol

    SO AWESOME!

oh oh, they should so make Tucker do the twerk, wait never mind that might scare the male fans.

even if most female fans might find it funny and perhaps hot for most parts.

but yeah never mind, naughty thoughts go bye bye.

    I'm going to blame Tucker.

    so yeah, that aside.

this behind the scenes was so awesome.

I love the fight scenes in Season 13! Its grittier and and more down to earth but with some sense of humor which I think fits Red vs Blue more. I'd say that the current fight scenes are more closer to Season 8 than Seasons 9 and 10. Season 8 had that down-to-earth feel and I love watching the fight scenes there than in Seasons 9 and 10. Seasons 9 and 10 were rather overly-fantastic for me.

Wish RT did internships specifically with the Mocap animation department. I'm an animation and visual effects student as well as a trainer for American Ninja Warrior and there's nothing I want more than to work in mocap. If you guys ever need some parkour/ninja help, I'd love to intern there in the summer!

And a great job you did, too. The choreography and action of this season was frickin' fantastic. Here's hoping that you'll bring the same skill and awesomeness to season 14.

Imagine if 343 hooked Rooster Teeth up with the animation and motion capture software THEY have. RvB on a whole new level

tbh the fight scenes in rvb are already better than halo 5, and i'd say that was even true when monty was the one guy doing everything.

I use Modo at school and home all the time, my last class I need to take actually is motion capture. I'll have to post some of my animation/models. Was really awesome to see you guys using the same software as I know most people just stick to maya/3ds max.

This is all so freaking cool! I wish i could do stuff like this. Motion capture is one of the most fun things ever, and Rooster Teeth does it right. I feel like even with this amazing new set up Monty still would have searched and found a way to make everything more efficient, i still miss him a lot, god bless him.

Our stunt team is led by Carmichael Simon. He has 3 martial artist that he uses on a regular basis, but he does bring in specialty stunt people as well. As for the animators, there are quite a few that have trained in some form of martial arts for a prolonged amount of time. Still, we did have Carmichael come in to give fight classes before we started RWBY 3 and the team really seemed to get a lot out of it.

Dreamhack Summer 2015 (huge LAN party in Sweden, I'm talking 10.000 seats), the chips company Estrella had a minimalistic mocap studio set up where you had to shoot vampires that wanted to steal the chips. really cool, the line was like one hour long for a ten second shot but it was really cool nevertheless

curious how the height of the actors plays into action capture. (new to all this)

    • SimsJoseph FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I don't think it matters. Motion capture is just that, captures motion. Strictly speculation, but I'm sure they can apply that motion to any size animated model, with maybe a little scaling involved. Think of motion capture used in the Hobbit for Smaug. The actor isn't a massive dragon but he can emulate one and they can apply the motions to the animated dragon.

Koen (Producer) here. Simsjoseph is completely right. When someone puts on a suit, we setup their skeleton which is paired to the base model that comes with Motive (software). We are able to take that data and place it on most any bi-ped.

I'm pretty sure. Why only strict the program to 1 show when you have another that also requires such detail as well when it comes to animation.

    • Woot10 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Animation Producer

Yes, we use the same software, but the animation process is different. Because RWBY is not a "life like" animation style such as RvB, the animators use mostly the key poses and clear out the frames for the beats in between. We always say that mocap performances are a lot like director notes.
