Volume 5, Chapter 5: Necessary Sacrifice

RWBY: Volume 5, Chapter 5: Necessary Sacrifice

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are each entangled in journeys of their own, but they all share one destination: Haven Academy. Whether it's the promise of ancient relics, mystical maidens, or simply more power, it's clear that the stage for the next great battle for Remnant has been chosen. The question is, with so many players in this game, who's going to come out on top?

God Adam is so uninteresting to me. He's just angry. All. The. Time. There's no intelligence from him, no character development when so much of it's happening with each of the other characters, and just... nothing. He's a angry man with a sword. (Shakes head)  All other real villains are ashamed to be in the same character group as him

I think that’s the point. He’s so one dimensional that he has no other side. He represents what the white fang is becoming. Just like Blake said, he is spite. There’s no rationality, no thought, just unfounded spite.

What's the significance of the painting the Fennec Brothers are worshipping? I still don't understand why people work with Salem. My rationale is that if she wins, humanity loses, and some of them are human.

I still don't get who she is. Did I miss something last season or some introduction of her character? I feel like all of a sudden people just started saying her name with no character being like "Hey, Salem is behind this and this is who she is and we think she wants this (but then hints of what she might actually want in some other scene idk)."

    • luminedracone

      @Sadpandabyrd

Visually, she introduced at the end of the last chapter of Volume 3 as the big bad behind Cinder and was seen a few times throughout Volume 4 where it is shown she is cpable of controlling Grimm. She was also the narrator at the very beginning of Volume 1 Chapter 1. Her goal is to gather the four Relics and use their powers to remake the world in her imagine. In order to get the Relics, she needs the powers of the four Maidens, who are the only ones capable of unlocking the containment units holding each relic. As for her history, all we know so far is that Ozpin failed to stop her from doing the exact same thing during his first life, and is now cursed to have his soul merge with a like-minded person everytime he dies so that he can continue his quest to stop her once and for all. This means that she is either a body jumper like Ozpin or that she has managed to live thousands of years. What she is, no one exactly knows.

      @Sadpandabyrd

I too was surprised to hear Ruby talk about Salem. I have a vague recollection that Qrow gave the backstory a few episodes back and/or last season, but it still felt a bit off. All she knows is Cinder and it's weird---as we haven't witnessed much of her processing the new information about Salem---for her to practically disregard Cinder and talk only about Salem. I haven't done a re-watch of volume 4 though before starting this volume so maybe I'm just forgetting stuff.

EDIT: thank you, @luminedracone. Now I recall. Should have done that re-watch...

    • luminedracone

      @callmegross

Ruby finds out about Salem from Tyrian when they first met and she insulted him by thinking that he was working for Cinder. It was during the talk that Qrow gave her and the others that they find out the basic info concerning Salem.

If Ruby and Oscar were to have a relationship, Ozpin would have to somehow be removed from the equation. Makes you wonder if there is a way Ozpin could somehow transfer his conscious from body-to-body while avoiding the death of Oscar, or perhaps Ozpin's curse is somehow broken and his conscious is lost forever/trapped in his most recent body until death.

    • luminedracone

In time, Ozpin's conscious will fade away, leaving only his memories and goals. The Ozpin we knew since Volume 1 is simply a shadow or an echo of the original person that was cursed. Eventually Oscar will be his own self, without Ozpin talking in his head or taking over his body.

Hello.  I know this is a late and long-winded comment to a video that's been up, but I felt compelled to share this with the RT community.

When I first started watching RWBY, I didn't think I would watch it that often or keep up with the show.  I wasn't that into watching TV shows, especially anime, but RWBY stuck with me over the years.  Something about it clicked for me.  The story, the characters, the emotions, and the whole concept behind it.  And how it's continued to improve volume by volume.  Over time I found myself coming back time and time again to the RT site solely for this show and the nice community that it fosters.  I was there for the good moments, volumes 1-2, the sad times with what happened to Pyrrah and Penny in volume 3, the recovery in volume 4 was actually when I was in a recovery part of my life too, and now for volume 5 too, to, like Monty said and Ruby just quoted, "keep moving forward".  At first when I watched this episode, I thought it was sad and hit me in the feels alright.  But after learning I have to do well on a big assignment for one of my classes tomorrow, or risk failing at a high level, it means something more.  I have been through times again and again over the past year and a half at college of dissapointment and depression.  I have wanted to give up on life, on everything I'm passionate for more than several times along the way.  But that line from Monty stuck with me.  "Keep moving forward."  And "Move onward, not there yet."  Because, similar to what Ruby explained, if we all just gave up every time something bad happened or we failed, we would never have the chance to grow stronger because of it and keep moving forward.  I haven't had the opportunity to go to an RTX or thank Monty, the cast, and all the RT staff for the over the top amazing job they do, but if Monty were still here today, I would say, "Thank you.  Thank you and everyone at RT for everything.  It's because of this show that I'm still here today."  There aren't words to describe my gratefulness and thankfulness for the people who put their hard work into making RWBY and the community that surrounds it.  So I will study for this big assignment, and do my best to pass.  We have to keep looking for answers, and again, like Ruby said, "Keep moving forward."  Not just for ourselves, but for everyone around us, even if we're afraid.  From the bottom of my heart, thank you RT and RWBY.  Ruby really is the spark that ignites us all.

I'm sorry if this is a little too personal or long for a comment section on a video, but I felt like it belonged here and nowhere else.  Stay strong, RWBY and RT.  <3

Ahhh Ruby and Oscar having a heartfelt talk! They're getting closer! I ship it! But I just hope that... well, the Ozpin in Oscar doesn't make things awkward... or mean Oscar dies.

If Ren or Nora dies I will... well I'm not going to go into details but they're finally getting, if possible, even closer!

And I know it's never going to happen but I wish Roman survived and Neo was still around and they were off being the best partners in crime (*cue the song) in the RWBYverse. I love my OTP too much... #gelatoforever

Blake and Sun was a poor choice of direction for the show, from a story-telling perspective. There was such an enormous level of potential for a deeply-emotional Blake and Yang subplot, especially with the way the story ended up going between them after season 3. Instead, they seem to be sticking with the overly cliche "Oh let's make the faunus be with the faunus."

As for Ruby and Oscar, that wouldn't be a good route to go due solely to him sharing a conscious with Ozpin. Even if Ozpin fades into his subconscious, it still means that in a sense Ruby would still be with Ozpin. It's just not a good idea.

I don't much care for Ruby and Oscar, but as for Blake and Sun, I don't remotely see it as being just because they're both Faunus kind of thing. IF they end up together (still far from guaranteed) it would have a lot more to do with how well they complement each other, and how committed Sun was to making sure she didn't fall apart. After the fall of Beacon, Yang became bitter over Blake running again, and justifiably so. But Sun's only concern was making sure Blake didn't go off on her own and get hurt.

I think Blake and Sun has hints of being romantic but will actually just prove to show how Blake has grown to trust him. I think likely once she sees Yang again she will feel guilty from everything that happened but will also be made up (just like Yang/Weiss). Either way, I think there is more romantic story direction with B/Y vs B/S. Her warming up to Sun made me think the the message being sent was that she has finally broken out of the mindset that she hurts everyone around her. Idk, any thoughts anyone?

  • aodpds711

Kind of hate that every episode has to be about different character (I know, for distributing the screen time.) Weiss and Yang seem to be under-development this season. And I still don't know what Raven is about to told them. Wish next episode could clarify that.

"we just didn't see it until now"
Speak for yourself, it was there, just not as in your face as most people are used to when it comes to character development, she isn't exactly the type of charcter MADE for that type of development, at least not all the time. Part of her character is how she still holds onto her dream of wanting to help people from when she was little. Another part is that DESPITE the obvious emotional scarring she suffered from the fall of Beacon, she chose to "keep moving forward", and as Jaune said, it inspired others to as well. Her character has developed and will continue to do so, you just gotta learn how to notice the smaller details. She probably isn't going to let just how bad she is hurting show that much, afteral, she is a leader and has responsibilites towards her team, and the people of Remnant, that she is going to put before herself, you know?

I posted this on reddit, but felt it was appropriate to post it here:

(Sorry if you don't like long winded critical analysisnitpicking , this got out of hand fast, probably because I miss writing so much.)

Man, I get what the writers/directors were trying to do, but I think it would have had a lot more impact if the dialogue was a bit more natural. I feel like, in terms of dialogue, they just want to get it done instead of getting it done the best they could. Because of these unnatural bits of dialogue, the immersion is broken.

I think only the conversations between Corsac, Fennec, and Illia were natural enough, maybe because that conversation has an objective purpose for the plot, so they knew when and how to say things.

For the conversation between Blake and Sun, they were trying to solidify the characters' representation through that one word personification, yes that's a good idea, but their execution could use some work. Blake says, "Have you ever met someone and thought to yourself, 'They are the personification of -this word-'" I find this to be a bit of a weird execution because it's something that's not exactly common and yet she says, "Have you ever...", having the implication of common. They do acknowledge this by Sun going "Uhh..." and Blake clarifying herself by giving an example, saying, "I remember getting to know Ruby and thinking, 'This girl is the embodiment of purity'"

Maybe it's just me, but when this conversation happened I automatically thought that the writers were talking, not Blake. I thought this way because of the unnatural wording of 'personification', 'embodiment'. These aren't such big words by any means, but these are words that are used to -describe- things in stories (like a writer would), and when they are used -in- a story, it becomes a sort of immersion breaker. Maybe she could have said, "I have a little habit that I do sometimes, I try to find one word that perfectly describes someone."(Along with the appropriate pauses and such that text does not come with) That way Blake seems less like she's asking Sun a random question, and more like she's opening up parts of her to Sun by revealing something personal she does for herself.

Then when Blake tells Sun what she's going to do about Illia, I feel like they could do with telling the lessons learned less explicitly. Because of this explicit lesson learning, I feel like the writers are talking again, not Blake, so the immersion breaks. The reason why it feels very explicit is that Blake seems like she has learned this lesson, and has made her mind clear enough to describe it in its explicit form. If she was still digesting this lesson in, she would have been less direct, maybe giving examples and such. Blake says,

"I'm going to try and help her the way you helped me."

"You showed me that sometimes you need to be there for a friend even when they don't want you to be."

"I was drowning in guilt and fear, I tried to push you away, but you didn't give up on me; and I can't give up on Illia."

The first sentence makes us think we're gonna hear her elaborate on how Sun helped her, but the second sentence talks about what was the effect of Sun's help, and only in the third do we hear what Sun did, as well as the inspiration Blake now has to help Illia. I think the second sentence is unnecessary.

Perhaps they added in the second sentence because without it, it might seem like Blake wanted to help Illia and not the rest of her friends, so that with the second sentence, the lesson learned would appear to be a more general lesson instead of specifically applying to Sun and Illia. However they could have done just that by making a few modifications. For example, Blake could have said, "I was drowning in guilt and fear, I tried to push you away, but no matter what I thought, you never gave up trying to help me. If you would never give up on me, then how could I give up on Ilia, on anyone...?"

In the original dialogue(more like monologue), Blake seems to be observing, taking the example of Sun's actions and learning, while in this dialogue(still monologue) Blake seems to be affected and inspired by Sun's actions, and feels the need to do the same.

Then there's the Ruby-Oscar dialogue. I have to say, when Ruby said, "You'll be combat-ready in no time!" with that sullen face right after, I LOVE that Oscar says, "How do you handle all of this?" because the reason Ruby's sad and the reason Oscar says that has the same theme, the conflict that has happened/is happening/is going to happen. When Oscar said that, it really felt like the past is having a conversation with the present; more specifically Ruby's present character. Then Oscar went on that mini-rant which I thought was fine. However, I didn't like Ruby's monologue here. I agree with some on here that it felt like a generic speech. Also, using Monty's motto a second time felt a little forced, and diminished the impact because it's repeated. If Ruby was inspired by Qrow to say that, then it should have been mentioned. Using his motto also made it so the immersion was broken, because we're thinking of something outside the show.

Loved this episode! It was good to finally see Blake praise Sun. Such a great guy. I love that smile she gets around him as well. I enjoyed their talk overall. Though I'm a little confused about her words about Adam. In volume 3 she said that he changed gradually, now she just says she was wrong about him. I really hope they don't write Adam as if he's just pure evil. I love his character so much and want to see some depth. I'm interested by Blake mentioning he's suffered though. I hope we eventually find out what exactly he went through.

I feel like her perception of him during her time at the white fang changed, but he was always that person under the surface since he joined the white fang. She was wrong in what she saw him as and his true self was revealed to her over time. I mean I would have loved for him to have gotten more desperate as he thought things weren't working but I don't think that is his character. RWBY isn't really know for having villains that aren't black or white. Only Torchwick was close as he just kinda wanted to join the winning team.

If I don't highlight this out correctly, and if people are already posting the same idea, I apologize. But I am predicting that maybe Blake surrenders or gets captured to protect her parents, and she is taken to Adam, who may be or heading to Haven already, and she will be held hostage. There will be the following big battle, and Hazel will be there too, likely as teased in the opening titles. And Ruby with team RNJR and Qrow and Oscar/Ozpin and likely Weiss and Yang will be there and they will all try to rescue her, unless she gets free, and team RWBY will be together again.

The hostage situation appears to be the most likely way Blake will reach Haven in time. Only her parents are gonna die regardless because Adam specifically asked for the slaughter of the Belladonnas. As for Sun, well I think he'll stow along with the White Fang when they take Blake to Haven.

After the whole "it's time I saved my friends for a change" speech, you think Blake is going to just get captured and need to be rescued?

Wow. This was the most mature I can recall ever seeing Ruby. I guess up until now I was still seeing her as that little girl from Vol. 1 but this episode just goes to show how much she has had to grow in such a short amount of time. Remember its only been 1 maybe 1 1/2 years tops in this entire show so far.

Especially after all that she has been through in that short amount of time. She is definitely going to keep growing and continue doing great things.

I saw that too... oh good god

I can see why you would make that mistake. Her eyes are actually a very very VERY light shade of purple (no idea what that shade is called). I'll admit I thought they were silver at first too.

Gray actually, but nothing more than that. first time she is seen in volume 4 they look very bluish, but it seems they made them darker this volume

i thought they were blue? also, i'm pretty sure her eye colour changes when her skin colour changes too, but that probably out of the question.

Any one else find it weird that Blake has 4 ears?

She has 2 human ears and 2 cat ears.

Please explain RT, show is practically unwatchable.

please don't let ruby just be a clone of summer rose, she is herself and her own unique person.

    • Leafia

I mean, we don't know anything about Summer Rose, so it's impossible to know how similar or different they are to each other.

All we know is that she died and she was, according to Yang. "Slayer of monsters and baker of cookies." We don't even know what her weapon was. Summer could be like Glynda for all we know.

P.S. Sorry if I messed up the quote.

No fights this episode but Ruby's emotional tale and the White Fang's plans cause the plot to thicken.

Okay, I've thought long and hard about this. I'm alright if they wanna do a relationship with Ruby and Oscar, on the condition that Ozpin is removed from the equation. Something gotta happen where Ozpin gotta go before I'm on board.

    • mastawolfgirl

Yeah that would just be really weird having ozpin being present and able to control oscar at anytime

    • layslegend4

Well when they first explained Ozpin inside him I assume either he will absorb Ozpin or Ozpin will decide to leave his body once the fight is over.

Maybe Ozpin will respect Oscar's feelings and sort of how you say hide inside his mind somewhere to give him privacy whenever he may interact with Ruby. Plus, maybe Ozpin can help give advice on how to interact with her?

    • bubsy1717

I'm sure ozpin will eventually vanish, as I'm sure there was no previous soul in ozpin

    • Bentonic

Well, Ozpin mentioned that after a while inside a new body, the two identities would merge and change. To me, that implies that eventually, we'll be left with an Ozpin that has taken on some of Oscar's personality and ideals. Ozcar, if you will. IMO, that'd still be pretty creepy, even though it would still technically be Oscar.

    • Silver1989

I'm not sure how oz will deal with oscar's potential (to my knowledge, currently unconfirmed) crush on Ruby, but he has explained that the cycle of past souls integrating has been in motion for a very long time, so we can assume that ozpin's character will eventually blend with oscar's. We can also assume that Oz wasn't always as portrayed throughout the series.

with ruby ( the lil cinnamon roll she is) i can understand her talking about loosing penny, but im kind bothered that we're hearing about her mourning when we haven't seen anything about ren and nora caring about loosing pyrrha, which im sure they did. they're orphans, so the only family the had by this point in time was their team but we have no idea how they feel abt the loss of pyrrha.

Ugh... everytime someone says "faunus" in these comments, I immediately see "funhaus"... not mad at it, though it does change my opinions radically. Also, probably some kickass fan art, if I were any good at art.
