Entertainment News: "Geeks Are Assholes" Says Ghostbusters Director

The director of the upcoming Ghostbusters movie says that “Geek culture is home to some of the biggest assholes I've ever met” in regards the fan reaction towards the film. What kind of fan reaction you ask? Well, like the fact that the Ghostbusters trailer is the most disliked trailer in Youtube history. Who you gonna call… names.

    VICTORIA SPEAKS THE TRUTH!

Getting back on topic, however, I have no problem with them doing a film about four women inspired by the original team to take up arms against a new wave of ghosts: It's not as if it's messing with the origin story in any way (ala TMNT); they're just setting a new story in the same universe.

Nor do I have a problem with them doing a straight-up remake, but with a female cast: In that regard, they're putting a new enough spin on it to allow each film to stand on its own.

For me, the problems are two-fold: First, decide what it's going to be! If it's a remake, acknowledge it's a remake, otherwise call it a reboot, and stop trying to confuse everyone.

Second, regardless of whatever issue certain arseholes might have with the direction they've taken for this film, I personally disliked the trailer - and would like to think the majority of the dislikes agree - because it was a shit-awful trailer! One (maybe two) gags worked, the efxs look distractingly cartoony, the characters look like broad and uninteresting stereotypes, and it's not funny.

I don't see what was wrong with the trailer. Did it blow me away? No. Do trailers really blow me away anymore? No.

The original Ghostbusters trailer looked equally as garbage as everyone claims this one to be. I feel like most of the controversy surrounds rampant sexism and how "unfunny" all of the leads in the new film are. I love all of those actresses, and I'm seriously looking forward to that movie. The Ghostbusters franchise has always been pretty campy and out there anyhow.

Trailer seems average IMO. You can never tell if a movie is good or bad until it comes out though (as the other trailer likes/dislikes proved). I like comedies and the cast has some pedigree, so if the reviews are alright after the first week its out I'll probably go watch it. If I don't like it I'm pretty sure its going to be content related rather than "those people should have a penis".

The problem I have with the trailer is that the comedy doesn’t work for me. However, it is possible that the movie will be far better than its trailer. I also have a bit of a problem with the constant remakes and reboots of classics but I can ignore that. I am not a huge Ghostbusters fan so I can’t say much about the various claims that the movie just seems to be banking on the name and not the substance of the previous films. However, many of my friends have called out this movie on a number of points that have nothing to do with the cast, and I believe them. Even though they may be exaggerating a bit. Either way, neither the director nor Sony are particularly smart in this case.

He's not wrong, the geek fan base does have a lot of vitriol. The running joke of YouTube comments and the internet negativity is just an accepted trope with truth behind it.

As usual, the vast majority of people are nice (many of whom congregate on RT thankfully) but the quietest in all of this. I personally can't wait for the movie, massive fan of Kristen Wiig, I love Melissa McCarthy and I can get behind Paul Feig directing and Chris Hemsworth making an appearance somewhere (in presence or voice).

I'm honestly worried this film is doomed to fail because of the unnecessary and disproportionate amount of hate this has been given. And some of it (no not all, but to deny it is becoming part of the problem here) is down to outright sexism. Such a shame.

Great news piece by Ashley & Meg as per usual. If only it was Monday so I could clap. Hell I'm clappin' anyway.

Yeah this movie doesn't really look very funny nor scary. Ghostbusters was funny and scary. That library scene was horrifying as a kid. This trailer, if reflective on the movie, shows that the movie will not be funny. No matter what gender/s the characters are.

I don't mind them using a cast made up primarily of women, what I mind is them recycling something that already existed (and was great to begin with) and pretending that gender swapping somehow justifies it. I'd much rather they make something new and original and then cast those four to play the roles.

    Hmm...

I like the original movies but they aren't anything I feel a deep attachment to. My only reaction to them rebooting was a general eye-roll at Hollywood in general over their need to reboot things. I'm not really that familiar with any of the ladies and I've never seen a Paul Feig movie so I've got no opinion on him as a director. I'm the ideal target... someone that is a scifi fan that liked the first two movies but is otherwise a blank slate without any specific predisposition against anyone making it.

The trailer is "meh" at best.. The effects look ok but the decision to have it ignore the first movies while still trying hard to make us remember those movies is weird. The decision to have 3 smart white women and 1 black blue collar "everywoman" seems painfully tone deaf. Worst of all... for a movie filled with comedians, it didn't come off very funny.

Ok, I just want to say this. A "Requel" is not a thing. A sequel is a continuation of an existing story that acknowledges and uses the history set by the original. A reboot is a retelling of the original idea that exists INDEPENDENTLY of the original. Something can't be both of those things. Can we please just pretend that no one ever used that word and never speak of it again?

If "Geek-Culture" was so misogynistic that the only reason we could possibly criticize the new Ghostbusters from the trailer is because we don't like that they gender swapped the characters, then why did we accept Daisy Ridley's character in The Force Awakens, which is just gender swapped Luke Skywalker? We dislike bad things because they ruin our affection for the franchise as a whole because now whenever I watch the original, I will be reminded of this new, unfunny garbage movie. It's not unfunny because they are women. If they did a shot for shot remake of the original Ghostbusters and the only thing different they did was cast females instead of males I would still love that film because the writing is good. When I watched that trailer, all I saw was a cheap attempt to play on our nostalgia for a thing we like and a bunch of unfunny sterotypes and I don't just mean everything they did with Leslie Jones' character, which is a whole other issue, mainly her character could be named Bo Jangles and I wouldn't know the difference. Maybe I'm just not the audience for this movie, and I will always have the original to watch, so when this one comes out I plan to ignore it just as I had Batman V Superman. I didn't reject the new film because it had women in the lead, I reject it because even with some of the most talented female comedic actors today in that movie, I didn't laugh once at the trailer.

I just think that it's the completely wrong brand of humor to be bringing to the franchise, especially to something that has been revered and heaped with so much nostalgia after 25+ years. I think Feig was a poor choice to run this, because it was never not going to be slapstick with him, and it's just the wrong way to go imho.

The whole gender thing is just the worst of the worst in geek culture, and it's lame how often that everyone with reasonable opinions get lumped in with them.

1st ghostbusters; Proton Packs are dangerous, to be respected. The Team move slowly and carefully, and are semi-careful with the equipment. Ghosts are wrangled but deep scores of fire and scorchmarks are left in the scenery when misses are had. Ray gets trigger heavy, and looks like he freaks out at the shear power he holds.

Reboot: She licks a proton pistol. This shows she has spunk, and attitude. Then she punches a ghost. Because women have to be super physical to keep up with the boys. Because empowerment.

Before I start, let me just state that I have no interest in this film at all. Not crazy about the originals (nothing wrong with them, just don't hold them on this god like pedestal that some others do) meaning that I don't really care about the reboot.

I see this as a large scale version of what went on with Jeremy in AH. For months and months after he first started, some people would ignore any video that he was in with the "jeremy suck...we want the originals" kinda crap. Basically judging what he was gonna be like before ever sitting down to watch and see if something new was gonna be good. Now look at him, Lil J's heist came out and people were going nuts over it.

The same needs to be done for this film. It could come out to be a steaming pile of dogshit, but you don't know that until you watch it. Bitching and moaning about the direction its going in before you sit down to see if it works just makes you seem, as he says, like an asshole. If this film turns out to be really good and funny then all these people will have to eat their words.

Basically don't judge a book by its cover. Judge it after you've read it. Really don't see why that's so hard

    • DreadScarlet FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

The trailer is what we have been given to to judge this on if we want to vote with our wallets. It is the studio's responsibility to show us a trailer that will make us want to give them money to see their movie. I don't think it's a simple matter to take the money back after seeing the movie, so we should honestly be judging a book by it's cover in this instance. The other option is to wait to hear from reviewers, but that depends on if you know one that falls in line with your opinions and views. I would never encourage anyone to spend money to "try and see" if something is good, especially for something that isn't generally refundable.

@DreadScarlet True but how many times have trailers completely misrepresented films, like they mention in this story. The main one that always sticks in my mind is Reign of Fire. to me it's a great, serious film, yet if you watch the trailer it looks like the cheesiest action film in existence.

Also no-one is making anyone go see this film. If you can't justify paying money to go see it to see if you like it, then don't, but understand that you don't really have any legs to stand on if you want to criticize it.

    • KuroShini Epsilon Sequence

I think the "fan reaction" that he's calling people assholes over are the people who issue death threats or say he should kill himself over this reboot, and less over a bad reaction to the trailer. Although the geek community is OVERWHELMINGLY positive and a great thing to be involved with, we should all admit that there are some really big assholes lurking among us. For christ sakes, you as content creators can probably recognize that some "fans" take things way to far when they don't like things (i.e. swatting, death threats, DOX-ing, etc.).

So I get annoyed when I see a clickbait-y title that is more inflammatory than accurate (yes some geeks are really big assholes, not all of them-- as opposed to what your title suggests he said), it's kind of irritating to see you adding fuel to a very stupid fire.

Is the movie going to be good? Who knows, probably not. Is it worth the personal attacks the director and cast keep getting? Hell fucking no.

So if the trailer is showing me a vertical slice of the movie then what I should expect from this new Ghostbusters movie some ghostbusting, women objectifying a man, a man making sexist remarks to women and a character who is incapable of not behaving like a racial stereotype. This is all the trailer has shown me. It hasn't shown me that any of the humor in the movie is clever or that it is in fact going to try something new.

When I compare even the small amount of footage in the trailer to the original content, the quality of humor just doesn't even match up. Sure they changed Winston into an everyman before production instead of a 4th scientist, but atleast to me he still felt like an intelligent inidividual with a character of his own.

I am certainly all for an all women Ghostbusters. It'd just be nice if they were being portrayed as three dimensional, which the trailer doesn't illustrate. To be fair it could be the trailers show only the tasteless humor, but if that's true it's still a terrible awful trailer that has informed me not to watch this movie.

Feig should have known better. Start playing with fan favorites and if you aren't careful then you're going to elicit a negative reaction. This isn't like comic book movies where many people are happy an adaption is simply being made; Ghostbusters already had its film adaption, and it holds up. Anything you do from that point forward is going to be a slippery slope, and the recent history of reboots should have shown it.

Feig's just pissed he's looking at the death of his career in the face. He can't handle the fact that people are calling his film bad, rightfully or not, in large part because he's got a lot riding on it. And sure, some take it too far, some make it about sexism or racism or whatever, but this is the internet. That's going to happen. The fact that people are still surprised that the internet doesn't have a filter blows my mind. When you post something bad (and let's be clear here, the trailer was very bad for reasons beyond female casting) then people are going to react negatively. When you post something bad (or anything, for that matter) which treads on something popular, then people are going to react extremely negatively. Simple facts of the internet.

Sure trailers can be deceptive or edited wrong, but a Ghostbusters movie trailer that looks like a sitcom is not good. It's not even close to the tone of the original, and I think that's a reason a lot of people dislike it.

Unlike Jack, I don't hate the Ghostbusters (2016) trailer because the cast is only women. I hate it because it seems like a terrible attempt to reboot the series. The original Ghostbusters set the bar pretty high so a lot of fans of the original were expecting something good.
