Game News: 'Just Stop Playing,' Rust Developer Advises

If you're a developer of an early access game and your players are constantly wanting updates to the game do you, A) keep working on the content since it IS early access, after all, or B) tell your fans to stop playing the game? We're going to go with option B.

To be honest the amount of game players have gotten so far for twenty dollars (probably less since there have been many sales since it went into Early Access) never mind the amount of time they've been supported for is really huge - look at some of the sixty dollar titles out there and tell me the support and quality of the games is better on average...

Also there are a lot of loud dicks out there and the absolute number only grows with the population of the planet; the trick is get on with you life - if that means doing something else or ignoring them or telling them to go f*ck themselves is your choice - whichever way they will still be there because loud dicks will always be loud dicks until they die (one can only hope that that is sooner rather than later).

I've a whopping 5 hours of play. I get into a server. If I survive the beach and am able to start getting the basics. I then get fisted by some guy, he takes what I have to take, destroys what I own. Assuming I survive to get to redo the basics, it just happens again. I really don't feel like I've been able to play Rust. There's no offline play and I'm not about to rent a server. I know it's got potential, but the community is shit. 'Lets kill this naked dude bc we can.' doesn't do a whole lot for the naked dude.

That's as much if not more the community's fault than it is the developer's... there are ways the developer can reduce that sort of thing but (as with 7 days to die and it's random spawn locations) that can have just as much impact on players (since it's hard to play with friends).

Of course, they could just tier the areas so higher level players can't get at lower level players... and completely change the feel and definition of an open-world game...

The internet will always complain about things, especially changes to something they love. That said though, you can't always dismiss the complaints as a phase (It's not a phase mom, MCR is my life. Gosh!).

Dipping into yesterdays video about video games not being art, despite how artistic the games may be in order to immerse the player, they are still games whose primary intent is to bring enjoyment to the player. If a change in mechanics, new mechanics, or the lack of mechanics altogether hurt the enjoyment of the player, that is a legitimate concern that must be addressed.

Now of course there is a limit to that as the game does have a specific direction and intent as determined by the developer. You shouldn't play Skyrim and complain about the lack of an M1 Abrams as a ride-able mount, or play Titan Fall and complain at the lack of a HUD element to let you track your mana. If the developer feels the inclusion of, lack of, or revision of a game element will hinder the game in becoming the game they intend to make, it is their prerogative to make the necessary changes.

All of this said, Rust is an interesting game to have this discussion on considering one of the changes that was made in this most recent update was the removal of the XP and Tech Tree system that they had only just included in the previous update. On the one hand, the developers clearly felt this mechanic wasn't in line with their intentions for the game. On the other, there are clearly a lot of players who preferred the system and felt it made the game more interesting and less chaotic (or whatever other weird reasons they had). So the question is, what's the compromise going to be.

As I finish typing this, I see how big this comment is and realize I should have probably gone to reddit instead perhaps, but that would require opening up another tab and typing in the url and yadda yadda yadda. But that big red submit button is right there, nice and easy. So... yeah.
