Our World is a Simulation?

Tech and Science News: Our World is a Simulation?

Is this world even real? According to astrophysicist Neil Degrasse Tyson, maybe not. At the recent Isaac Asimov memorial debate he stated that he thinks the chances of our universe being a computer simulation is "very high".

you can't say he's wrong. BTW I absolutely love Neil Degrasse Tyson. He is extremely smart and I don't mind a person who finds faults with movie, I do that a lot just don't say it. Him, Einstein, bill Nye, and Hawkins are/were the best public scientists in the world.

Also these are not new assumptions even for him in fact there was a lot more controversy on this topic a couple years back.

I mean it makes sense that we could be a simulation. If simulating the universe with a flat 0% chance of inaccuracy is possible, the beings in the simulation would create a simulation, and the beings in that simulated simulation would create a simulation. If that just kept going forever, there would be nearly infinite simulations inside of other simulations, making the chances of us being at the very top almost non-existent. In fact, if we haven't made a simulation yet, we may be at the very bottom. Maybe the meaning of life, the goal of a civilization, is to make a new simulated universe to ponder the same thing.

    I need sleep.

Dear alien/robot overlords if you are truly in control could you end war and shit and create a world with no money or something and we can just take what we want.

That would mean only logic, maths, and basic relationships themselves would ultimately have meaning. That's true no matter what. Bazinga!

I remember as a kid being at a pool and this guy was talking to the life guard about what if we were all just in a game like the Sims and were being controled. This has always stuck with me. I believe he then started crying in the water and the life guard had to pull him out. This actually happened.

While I don't agree with everything Neil Tyson says, I thinks it's important that we have these educated people that can break through to popular culture and explain things in a way that everyone can understand. It gets people into science that may never have otherwise. I think that's very important in furthering the human race. I'd rather read about him instead of what Kim K is up to because at least it's thought provoking.

I love debates like this and watching people like Neil Degrasse Tyson, Richard Dawkins, Lawrence Krauss and Bill Nye debate about things far beyond our current reach or understanding.
A lot of it is just thought experiments (like this, or when he talks about the nature of consciousness in another panel years ago), but the ideas show up in games like 999 where they talk about a similar hypophysis at one point and make for engaging reads.

Still such ideas are not at the level of scientific theories, so just enjoy discussing the infinite possibilities of everything, keep an open mind and have fun :P
Also, if you die and see a game over screen, he was right!

So I don't mean to be that guy buuuut... If you replace the phrase "highly advanced alien" with the word "God" in this situation does anything actually change other than evolutionist getting butt hurt over what word I used, and creationist getting butt hurt... because they don't want to be left out, or something. So the man who completely dismisses any argument of intelligent design is now claiming that the universe was created by hyper-intelligent beings, and also made a major philosophical argument that is becoming a media sensation, despite believing that philosophy is useless? For a smart man, he really is a fucking moron.

I am kind of disappointed that the Know did not include a single reason why Lisa Randall believed that Simulation Theory is not factual. It just seems like lazy, or biased journalism. I am sure Lisa gave a reason, but it was simply not reported on this video. I am not concerned about the Know's opinion of Simulation Theory; just Lisa's reasons. The Know's cast are not Theoretical Physicists.

One huge issue with the Simulation theory is irrational numbers. An irrational number is a never ending non repeating sequence which would be impossible to program because it is of course never ending. I covered this in a first year physics lecture. But Tyson is also far more intelligent than I am so who knows. Shit's crazy.

Irrational numbers are mathematical constructs created by us to measure the universe. It is a very simple process, to divide, that a common calculator can attempt.

That's the difference between philosophy and religion. Where philosophy seeks truth, religion asserts it to control people. The difference between a godly programmer and a god would be a godly programmer would seek nothing but the program to play out while a god would seek obedience and worship. A god is a meddlesome programmer, one who inserts his own personality and will into the program. In other words, whether something is a god or simply an almighty programmer depends on how much the being claims authority over us. Perhaps the big bang was a wipe when the last simulation led to beings capable of ending the program or even ending the programmer. Perhaps maybe perchance! Indeed...

@ReckonBallZ you have a really (like REALLY) biased opinion of Religion. It's simply just the structure of faith, which is beliving in something whether or not there is proof.

    • himm FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@sirenite Religion is anything people want it to be, as thats what its there for, to gather people who believe in the same things. Gods themselves, in all kinds of mythologies and books where they are personified, and therefore exist, all desire to be believed in, such that they often reach out to people or prophets in order to make people believe. @ReckonBallZ is trying to say, the difference between life being created by a god and life being a simulation is that in one, the creator of the universe exists inside of the universe it created, and the other does not.

@himm I think it came off a lot more aggressive than that, and aggression in religion is a common misplaced stereotype is all. This interpretation of god vs programmer really depends on which religions the person's religious knowledge is based on.
