Snapchat SUED For Car Accident

Tech and Science News: Snapchat SUED For Car Accident

Using Snapchat while driving is a bad idea, as one teen driver found out when she rear-ended another car going over 100 MPH. She was trying to use the app's speed filter to prove how fast she was going. The people in the vehicle that got hit are now suing Snapchat saying the app facilitated the crash.

Should've gone to an empty stretch of road with nobody for miles.

But seriously, I think they should share the blame, with the driver taking a ton more of the blame.

Is that why I got a notification from Snapchat about not using the app and driving when I swapped through the MPH fliter? Damn

So if the idiot had just taken a picture of the spedometer, do you sue Apple or Samsung or whomever made the phone? Do you sue Google for making the camera app?

It's absurd how hard people want to work to blame anything that basic common sense should have warned them about.

Whatever happened to good old stupid driving, like racing!? When I was that age, we did 100 because it was fun, not because a ridiculous app rewarded us for something!

I'm 19 turning 20 soon and what to know what I do when I drive? I through my phone mute and place it in the center glove box, when it vibrates the person will have to wait.

Tell you what though, I nearly gave a few people a small panic attach because I didn't respond to the call or text for a half hour at a time.

Wait, so it IS legal to use your phone while driving in some parts of the US? That's ridiculous. There's a blanket ban for EVERYONE in Ireland and it's helped a lot.

Yes, but unless you are an offender you are looked down on by everyone ells. Sadly that does not get people anywhere and it leads to cases like this.

I guess I'm the minority here but I agree with the case. What was snapchat thinking putting the speed filter on there!? Of course people will use it driving! I'm not saying the idiot girl is innocent I'm saying they are both in the wrong here!

Being the idiot who speeds and use their phone to prove it is straightforward criminal. People like that shouldn't be allowed on the road ever again.

Maybe the guy doesn't have a case against Snapchat, but as a company who reachs millions of idiots who pulls their phones out while driving, they should have a moral responsability to, at the very least, remove the app that evidently encourages some people to drive over speed limits while paying attention to not the road.

wait america dont ban mobile phones whilst driving that is crazy its the same with seatbelts and i have no sympathy for the girl or her friends if they didnt tell her to slow down, anyone who is in an accident from their own fault like cliff diving, drunk driving etc dont deserve any sympathy especially if they hurt or killed another

A law like that is passed by individual states here, not the federal govt. Some states (like New York, where I'm from) ban cell phone use while driving altogether - no handheld or hands free use, while others haven't ruled on it at all.

"Encourages reckless behaviour" - Bulllllllshiiiiiiiit. Do people REALLY need a label with bold text telling them not to drive at 100mph in a 50 zone? Or not to use Snapchat in a public area?

If you wanna use Snapchat whilst driving at 100, find a wide, spacious area with no people. Just like if you wanna use a handgun, you go to a shooting range, not just pull one out in public and start firing at whatever.

When you lot started I was laughing at the absurdity of it, but as you continued to explain, they might actually have a basis for a legit court case. Its not a matter of snapchat = crash, its more a matter of snapchat had a feature that encouraged reckless behavior. unlike google and the un-sidewalk'd woman (who should have used some logic and gotten off that type of road AT NIGHT *cough*...) this is a feature of the app. Its possible for them to remove and thusly stop/not endorce such behavior, vertently or inadvertently. I can see how a case could have some actual footing. Still the kids fault for not being trained properly.

Nah, I don't think they do. It does encourage driving fast, but it hardly takes more than a little common sense to know not to drive at 100 in a 50 zone.

It's also common knowledge that speeding to that extent, and using a cellphone whilst driving, are both illegal, so it should only be done in spacious, open area that not part of public roads. It pains me that some people apparantly need that spelling out for them, but even in that case I don't think Snapchat is at all liable.

I agree for the most part, but now people who grew up with technology from birth. Think that if there is no rule against it, it's ok to do. They have no common sense and believe they can pass to blame to someone else, because no one said it was wrong to do it.

They both said it best. The plaintiffs need money for the continued costs that comes with such a brain injury, and they won't be able to get that from the irresponsible snap-happy driver (who, like the Affluenze teen, won't be held responsible).

So... they were convinced (by some lawyer) to try to get money from the larger purse... and the lawyer is likely risking nothing with much to gain while the client is risking everything with little to gain. I hope someone can help them sue the lawyers after they lose against Snapchat's company, but as lawyers go, they make clients sign stuff saying that they can't touch the lawyers if they lose but usually still have to pay the lawyers. (In my guess, the plaintiffs were probably sold a bad bill of goods by the lawyers which should account for something... but lawyers always cover their asses.)

I hate people who do this. They are just assholes blaming a company so they can take their money. The idiot teen is the problem. It's their fault for driving while using a phone, don't punish the company for a user's idiocy!

I know, right? These people rather risk their lives than put down the phone for a few minutes so they can pay attention on driving! Some of them need to put that phone down even more because some of them can't drive EVEN WITHOUT DISTRACTION!

A week or so ago, I saw a girl come out of a building on her phone, walk a block to her car, drive one block while texting, get out, still on her phone, and walk into presumably her house. Could she not 1. put down her phone for one block? 2. Walk one block while texting at the very least? Why drive to school when you live 3 blocks away?!

Why are these idiots suing the company? It's the drivers fault for being a complete moron.

    • Unruley3

they're suing because the app gives achievements for taking a picture with the speed filter at high speed, which is intended for trains, airplanes, etc. Therefore their case is that the app encourages people to drive recklessly to try and get the achievement or trophy or whatever
