My wonder is how does a YouTube Red account effect these videos? I don't care if a video has ads because I'm paying to not see those, and I want my monthly payment going to support the videos I watch, regardless if they're the same type of videos an advertiser likes. If I'm watching someone regularly, I'm apparently okay with the content and I'm not concerned if content is advertiser friendly.

Having read the Youtube content policies, I already knew about what content they approve or not and the only thing that they changed was the notification.

That being said, they don't want to approve of 'mature content' ads on videos that are flagged as such because you can get a bit too close to porn ads if you allow the 'mature' networks of advertisers. Which is what they don't want. It'd be too easy for any parent to sue Youtube/Google over their kids being exposed to such content even if it was age-gated by the viewers' account.

Also, people who are unhappy with this should be listening to @burnie is always saying: "Have your own space on the internet." Because, while Youtube is a great place to find new viewers, you are playing by their rules on their platform. They can do whatever they want and you agree to it by accepting their terms when you make an account.

People need to understand how to monetize online content like Rooster Teeth had to learn it back when they started in 2003. But I'm pretty sure that it's easier now since online businesses are 'real' things (more common place that they were back then) and the path to monetization has been cleared by the 'old guys.'

I largely agree with you with the exception of the last sentence/statement, Burnie has on multiple occasions stated how much harder it can be now, despite the technology being limited at the time and the hosting costs. Starting your own content platform now means competing with the likes of youtube instead of utilizing/working with it. This is why RT started at the perfect time.

Everything is now released on one platform Youtube, which has a great advertising and revenue earning system and links similar content to keep content junkies getting their fix whilst advertising throws in the money.

Youtube, owned by biggest internet Giant out there Google, means your new content is seen by your audience, as such it is much easier now (as long as you stick to the policies and requirements) to start yourself, or earn money off Youtube content, and the prime example of this is Rooster teeth... and screw attack and achievement hunter and funhaus and just about everyone owned by Fullscreen.

Whilst SOME of their content did not start there, almost all of it is released there at some point now. Sometimes the content is NOT supported by Youtube, and I love that they are willing to put out content that isn't and that they always have the option to release on their own site. All their general content (not First content) is released on Youtube as well now though and it shows that having your own platform is great exactly as you said! It provides control, being able to release what you want, when you want is awesome too. But getting in the audience and making money from content is now the Youtube way and unless there is another big breakout provider in the next few years it is likely to remain this way, for better or worse.

I'm also a little disappointed that the AH reaction was if it starts becoming a problem we may have to start censoring ourselves (More seriously) because they do occasionally censor. I would hope that if this goes into effect they would still release the "Normal" uncensored videos on the AH website??

      @n2link Oh yeah, of course.

Youtube is definitely a platform that helps with having your content being discovered, but the same could be said for reddit (or any other social platform). I think they should be used like tools rather than relying completely on something that is owned and operated by someone else. My point is more to try and prevent Youtube from having a monopoly on video content (Even though a monopoly is almost impossible on the internet).

Thus, creators should have their own space and rules. Deciding themselves what can go on their site and what shouldn't. Even though I think it annoying to have long end title cards, the creators need to point to their internet space and push the point that there is more videos available there. Doing that would gather an audience and followers rather than having just the occasional watcher.

It is harder to operate on a larger scale and it's fine to have a starting point like Youtube. But as Funhaus mentions often, making content is marketed as being 'fun' and 'a hobby' that turned into a job, but in the end, it's a business and business decisions should be made. Making money is part of the job, even if it's a fun job, and relying on a service that can change on a whim isn't safe.

As for monetization, it's okay to rely on advertisements for a while, but as a business, other sources like Patreon, merchandise, or even your own subscription service (like Sponsorship/First) is safer and brings in more money per person than advertisement per user. I'm pretty sure it's hard to sell Let's Play DVDs (not that people buy physical media nowadays either), but you can sell shirts and stuff. It's not 'easier' per say but the road has been traveled before by other people and the resources are there.

I like how the Funhaus comments show published right before this includes something like a cumulative minute straight of oral sex jokes... Not going to lie, I'd be pretty disappointed if they held back from doing something like that again in the future simply for the sake of vague, bullshit PC regulations. I mean, what's Demo Disk without Rule 34?! Blasphemous!

If I understand this correctly, this just means they can't monetize videos like that. And since they are part of RT, they probably aren't very dependent on add revenue on their videos on YT I think they'll be fine. At worst they might decide to stop putting some shows on YT al together.

It is a form of censorship. Censorship isn't a one dimensional action where censorship is only removal of content. They are saying if you freely express yourself or cover certain topics as personality driven content and news tends to do, we are not going to pay you. So if the content creator with to continue to make a living they must change the way they act and how they do things, and they basically can't cover any news that isn't happy go lucky fun time. They are using the threat of not getting paid to change the narrative, like how China won't allow any movies, tv shows, news or websites to show that portrays anything negative about the government unless it is heavily altered to the point of being almost a completely different version or to bend the truth in such a way it might as well be a lie. To not recognize this as a form of censorship is extremely antiquated and naive thinking likened to the antiquated rules/thinking of fair use.

I don't really think it was wise of Lindsay to suggest that Achievement Hunter would possibly consider censoring themselves as a result of this, or for any reason. She was probably just being honest, but that kind of vague, non-committal statement is generally unhelpful in terms of informing their audience, and acts as fuel for the types of people who love to spread wild, uninformed speculation online.

I mean, I would agree that it wasn't censorship if CNN's channel didn't still have ads on videos about the very things said to be prohibited. Not to mention the hypocrisy after YT joined in on the whole "black out over censorship" thing that went down the other year.

I was waiting to see when RT would get some say in on this topic since other YouTubers have already started talking about it. It honestly seems like YouTube is effectively shooting themselves in the foot given how much hasn't been communicated over what is and isn't okay, and how long some things have been demonetized for. The fact that as far as we've been told things are automated, this is going to blow up in their faces- HARD. It's not a matter of if, but when this gets truly ridiculous- not that it isn't already. Everything that is in their new "guidelines" is incredibly vague and very hard to see whether or not it applies. This whole situation is just stupid because of how YouTube is handling it.

The issue they fail to talk about at all, is that YouTube isn't letting the advertisers pick if they want to have ads on the video. YT just says nope, they cursed a lot CLEARLY you don't want to put ads on that video with millions of views. The advertisers don't get to even say if they want the ads on the video in the 1st place. That's the most BS part.

Controversial news breeds controversial events. Why did the chicken cross the road? To escape awful conditions in industrial farming. You just had to ask. For all you knew, that chicken lived in sunshine at the end of a rainbow with bunnies for neighbors and suffered from only too much cock in its cloaca.

I'm confused what the outrage is about. Honestly though, I only use Youtube when I want to watch Warcraft related videos that Blizzard doesn't have on their site anymore since it was updated or never had to begub with like the radio show for Legion and for RT content when I'm watching on something that the site doesn't get along with.

  • CoffeeBurps FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Isn't this just YouTube shooting itself in the foot financially? Its not just the creators that get money from the ads, YouTube takes a cut of that as well. And if YouTube decides to remove monetization from videos with controversial content, profanity, etc, there goes monetization for 80% of the videos on YouTube. Which takes away 80% of YouTube's income as well. And according to Google, YouTube is barely breaking even in income compared to upkeep costs.

So even looking at this from the most business minded perspective, looking at it weighing pros and cons for YouTube and only YouTube, this is an awful idea. So I have to ask, "Who done fucked up, YouTube? Who in your chain of command done fucked up?"

Seems like a lot of older youtubers have been through similar before and are just waiting for the dust to settle before doing anything about their content, while newer ones are a bit panicked.

Personally I can't see what YouTube is going for here. A solution that swaps one problem for a different one isn't a solution at all. An experiment maybe?

They seem to be pushing YouTube Red a lot on their Twitter while this goes on, but all I can see this action pushing is Patreon.

(And why would I get YouTube Red for no ads if everyone I watch removes ads from this? :p )

On one hand I get the advertisers concern. When I watch atheist focused videos and get commercials for Catholic Insurance agents, I'm probably not their intended target ;p

Jokes aside, the one Burnie tweeted about with Day 5's ad was a pretty unfortunate pair up.

But news should be supported, even tragic or controversial news. If you let advertises choose not to support such stories, would the stories ever be supported or reported?

Whatever happens I'll support the content creators I like as I do here with my sponsorship, and I look forward to the YouTube AH videos bleeping all the swear words.

It's Let's Play in Morse Code.

I guess for those months they been blacklisting video while they have been working out an appeal process. One Philip Defranco's videos was denied an appeal than later it was able to be monetizable again. Weird. What is still weird that the Philip Defranco show is a news show, to inform the masses of what is going on in the world and then he gives opinion on the matters and ask what the viewers opinion are. Having discussion. But his videos have and can be in the section of controversial or sensitive subjects like a lot of people. Who knows, maybe Youtube wants to stop all the news channel on Youtube.

Youtube does reserve the right to have the final say on what videos can and cannot be monetized.

That is a one of the big reasons why I watch Achievement Hunter is because you guys are crass and profane.

Thank you Ryan and Ashley for saying vlog instead of v-log.

I am stunned that YouTube is as stupid as this. The most freaking obvious thing in the world is to ask the freaking advertisers what do you consider off limits to your brand and not use them on videos that use that content. If they have no problems with the content then their ads get played it is so FUCKING simple. Damn sometimes people/companies and be incredibly dumb.
