I've been really liking The Patch podcasts, as they are informative and entertaining without either overtaking the other too much.

Also, I don't think Michael saying "Mario" the way he does is the same as Burnie saying "Pokemans" for "Pokemon" (since I think Burnie just says that for the reaction at this point).

Hi guys I love all of your podcasts and videos. I'm a big fan. I feel that you guys are misinformed on the Xbox One's DRM policy and just wanted to correct you guys somewhat.

On MajorNelson's blog he had an article with Marc Whitten about Family Sharing and Gold Sharing. Everything they announced at E3 still appears to be part of the system. You can read it here:
    majornelson.com/2013/08/09/xbox-one-sharing-d...

I also wanted to point you to an IGN page that gets updated every Monday, where Marc Whitten answers questions from the community regarding the Xbox One. A few points he made, you will be able to get pre-order bonuses with digital content like you do and retail stores and that in the future you will be able to pre-load your digital content and it will unlock on launch day. Just like Steam does it. You can keep an eye on that page here:

A funny thing about the discussion on this Patch was stealth games and Gavin. Burnie was talking about who he associates with various franchises, and based on past podcasts, I most associate Gavin with Hitman, in terms of games he plays at home. I imagine in real life, away from the camera, he's actually quite a different player than he is in the AH offices.

Regarding the live stream for the RT Podcast: I think that the only difference (this time) was that the announcement was not upfront, as it usually is. It made sense that one wasn't going to be live, due to the holiday, and that staff was not in town. It may have been perceived as different due the announcement placement.

I really hope Burnie does start playing Pokemon X and Y. His new, unbiased opinion on the game would be amusing, to say the least. Also, wish Michael had gotten into the details more.

One thing I will say as i think to what @Burnie said toward the last few minutes of this podcast, just as much as this is a market for media production, it is as anything else, a business that must continue to make progress financially. But thankfully we sponsors will continue to support this community and watch this company grow into something everyone can enjoy. Like myself and everyone who is a sponsor on the site, thank you to all at RT that provide us will this level of entertainment! smiley0.gif

I know Major Nelson mentioned a "Family Sharing plan" before the DRM change in the Angry Joe interview, but no hard details about it were released until after it was taken back. I got the feeling by how he said Family Sharing plan that it was going to be a subscription service.

As far as recording stuff in advance, I don't see why it would be an issue. A six week prerecorded podcast might be a little out of place, but for AH it's not much of an issue because the topic is generally the game. The reliable schedule is awesome though, and I wouldn't think that the majority of the viewers watch these to get their news.

I don't know why but this format seemed different. It was good having the Achievement Hunter guys talking about what they do and the group actually running through upcoming/new releases rather than just talking about random games (not that that's a bad thing either). I'm actually looking up a few things they've mentioned this time rather than just listening to the jokes and moving on.

I also like the quick news updates from Ashley every now and then.

Nintendo really needs to get their digital service in gear. No accounts to tie anything to so you can't transfer licenses between devices... Nearly every other company that has an online marketplace has it, but Nintendo is so slow to adopt such a feature.

You misunderstand me, I have no problem with the Patch reporting news; I have a problem with whom they've chosen as their reporter.

"Burnie said that most internet companies only get games early if they are gaming news centered rather than just gaming entertainment centered." Yes, Burnie is correct in stating that most developers will only grant early access and behind the scenes previews to companies that are news centered rather than entertainment centered. Mostly this is due to sorting and the fact that developers simply don't have the time to grant everyone access to everyone who wants it, so they filter out the smaller publications and the publications that aren't gaming or news centered. However, this early access is actually quite problematic for most gaming news outlets and comes with a price. Most video game magazines or sites are beholden to any company that grants them early access because those developers and publishers expect positive reviews for opening their doors. Yes, it's press for the developer, but it's much more of a financial boon to the media outlet than the developer. It's also what brings in the audience for a lot of these media outlets, promises of previews and behind the scenes sneak peeks; things that most developers could get by without. This is why most video game reviews won't go below a mediocre rating for games that they had an early preview of, no matter how good or bad the game actually is, because if they judge these games too harshly, the developer will refuse to continue to grant these media outlets access to early previews. The Patch doesn't do reviews, but they do talk about games in passing and even offhand comments might come back to haunt them.

As for early videos and screenshots, there are already a ton of media outlets for that. The better question is does the Patch need to mirror those other sites like IGN or should it carve its own path? Moreover, is the Patch's news offering anything that hasn't already been reported on one of the myriad of other news sites? In other words, will they do any actual investigative reporting, which would give them a unique perspective, or is it all just recapping? Right now, their news segments are entirely the latter, meaning that if you have access to IGN, Joystiq, and Giant Bomb, you've already read everything the Patch's news segments will cover.

In regards to Let's Plays of unreleased games, I highly doubt it. You might see a Let's Play for a game a week before it's released or something, but you'll never see a Let's Play for a game months before it's scheduled to come out. If you know how video game development and legal agreements with publishers and distributors work, the reasons for this should be obvious.

They briefly alluded to the reason why they are starting to do news videos on the podcast. Burnie said that most internet companies only get games early if they are gaming news centered rather than just gaming entertainment centered. So, while the show isnt side-splitting, im sure it will be the show to thank for upcoming early videos and lets plays on unreleased games.

I'm not disagreeing that they shouldn't have a dedicated person for this role or that they should be reporting video game news on The Patch (they should). What I am disagree with is the person they've chosen for this role and their qualifications.

I know Ashley used to write for IGN, which doesn't fully qualify her in my book since IGN is pretty middle-of-the-road when it comes to video game journalism. However, despite that background, she routinely misinforms the public, gets things wrong, or just generally doesn't have enough material to follow up on things. For example, in this episode of the Patch they cut to Ashley to talk about Steam Sharing. Valve put out a press announcement and updated their website on Monday with all of their policies pretty clearly laid out. How on Wednesday she still is able to state that she doesn't know if Saints Row 4 was region locked or not (yet she chose to use it as an example of region locking on PC even though Valve has an entire page dedicated to talking about region locked games that's been up for years), that the nit-picky details have come to light (Valve covers all of this on their website so the big and little details are all out there for public consumption since Monday), or comparing this to the plan Xbox One put forth (the two aren't similar in anything but name alone), is beyond me. This wasn't that bad and she only got some minor things "wrong", but she has done worse before (and occasionally better). Basically, this is what I expect from a blog, not a journalist or reporter.

Bottom line, I have no problem with Ashley as a person; just her in this role. I believe that if they want the Patch to get better and if she wants to be the journalist of the group, then she needs to put more effort into actually being a journalist. Maybe the problem is entirely mine and my standards are too high. However, I believe my criticism is fair and I have every right to state it. Just like the rest of the community has every right to downvote me to oblivion and the RT crew has every right to completely ignore my petty complaints.

It makes sense to have an allocated person for this and Ashley knows what she is doing. RT are building a focus around industry news and it is important to assign somebody to that role to distinguish between productions.
