I find it funny that people who mention the ipad screens and second screen stuff being cool. Don't mention Nintendo's Gamepad its exactly what they are looking for. AC 3 had what jack wanted and more on the Wii U with the Gamepad. Guess that just my 2 cents for the day I'll take off my Nintendo fan boy hat off now.

RT Crew; A "flag this as spam" or just "spam" button is starting to seem necessary...but look on the birghtside, you've become big enough to fall prey to bullshit adverts under the bullshit guise of members smiley0.gif . Of course, all other real commenters here; gotta help RT out here guys, none of those profiles don't exist anymore, but still some of them appropriately have -8 in vote downs, while some only have -2 vote downs... we should probably all take a quick sec to vote down these in order to make them more visible quicker smiley1.gif .

In other news, my original comment...anybody notice how similar Jack and Ryan sound? I feel like if this were not a video podcast, I wouldn't know the difference of who's talking at times smiley6.gif

Jack totally encapsulates what really bummed me out about TOR. They spent so much time on story they really lost what made SWG really special— a sense of community. Player cities, customized ships, guild bases, etc.

I'm a traditionally trained animator, just purchased student software/aware of cost of licenses for professional versions.
Maya and 3Ds Max are both about 3,675$ per copy ,Zbrush is about $750, Adobe software is a different story, they went to monthly subscriptions, about 50$/month depending on the software bundle. But CS6 sold at about $2,100 for the creative production suite. Not sure the pro. price of Unreal 3. but I know its a lot.

Talking about Maya. I have been using that program for years. I've been a Rooster Teeth follower since season 1 with my fellow Marine Corps knuckleheads. You may want to look at Digital Tutors for your Maya guys. That is what I use to stay current on new versions and tutorials for the program. Just saying. Out

Wanted to correct you guys on the remark about supposed legal action against Naughty Dog and Ellen Page of Beyond Two Souls that you had stated as fact, and even spoke of briefly as it was real.

To make it very clear , NO Legal action ever took place and was never even considered, it was a misunderstanding and a bunch of overzealous commenters on Reedit that took Ellen Pages comments out of context.

Naughty Dog's The Last of us has shown many incarnations of the character ELLIE before release, and has proven no malice or intent and also has proven from timeline production that the likeness was coincidental, and in fact composite Ellie designs had been based off of the facial structure of a younger looking Actress " Ashley Johnson " that is the voice of Ellie on the Last Of Us, and of course all this information can be checked freely.

No Legal issues have even been considered or are even occurring, and no Legal Action ever was taken or intended to be taken.

The issues of confusion had more to do with the exploits of "nothing better to do" but post lies to boost page hits and fill up a very slow News cycle during a weekend months ago.

Lets not get into the issues that both those games are Sony PS3 only Exclusives and are ripe for haters to try and create some negativity around, some wonderful releases, But people also forget that Naughty Dog and Quantic Dream are both Sony Corporate Game Studios and Companies under contract and it would be very unlikely that any legal action would even occur cause of this since suing yourself doesn't make to much sense, Not saying it can't be done but just that point alone proves how ridiculous any talk of legal action is or would be.

It would be worth your time to research your information before saying anything on your show as fact especially about Legal issues or anything else for that matter that could be considered not an opinion.

it would indeed be to your listeners and your shows credit to correct this untruth and call it out for what it is....
A Farce and a misunderstanding that took on a life of its own a story that has no basis in fact or truth.

I like a good news story like anyone else, But it needs to be truthfully factual and have a basis of credibility that can be checked, Not rehashed Viral bloggers misconceptions that have been handed down so much that readers or listeners take as fact but in reality have no basis in fact at all.

For the claim of hypocrisy on the micro transaction haters
Micro transactions fail in games because they either sell content that shouldn't be excluded to the free players, or they sell power that cannot be normally obtained by free players. You named a few games that do it for the most part correctly, and a few that don't. I will use my own example of terrible micro-transactions, star wars the old republic, they sell so much power that the gap between free players and paying players is outrageous, you can't even use the crafting skills properly as a free player unless you waste money or make multiple characters, and then they have gear with outrageous stats restricted to the paying players that free players either have to buy an authorization for, or become paid players to get.

They also inconvenience free players with extreme restrictions, 250k credit cap, 350k credit cap for those who reach preferred status, it is easy to get that much money, but the price of items in the galactic market for a player above lvl 30 are overpriced to the point that you cannot even afford it when you hit the money cap. PvP has gear that is restricted to those with artifact authorization or a subscription, this gives other players a significant advantage over you, the power gap between prototype gear and artifact gear is so large that the PvP becomes unfair for free players.

Not knowing how people don't have internet
You guys can't be that blinded can you? People work minimum wage jobs barely able to have a few bucks left over at the end of a month that they try to save and put towards things they like, and gamers with low income like myself, sometimes sacrifice necessities in order to afford the games/consoles/computers/internet that they enjoy. I go days without eating sometimes, because I want to have enough money in two months to upgrade to that lovely $60 quad core amd processor.

I can barely even afford internet at times, and it usually leaves me with no money till my next paycheck which will go to bills and most of the time food. I am not the only gamer in this position, there are plenty of others, in fact, I believe that a lot of the people that hated on the always online requirement for the Xbone were either in a similar situation as me, where they know that they might not be able to pay for internet, or were thinking of people like me.

I know Jack will never read this, but the potential problem with microtransations and Day-one DLC in games is simple. I see it happening in a wider context constantly in my job. Wikipedia summarises it nicely:

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upselling
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cross-selling

It fundamentally shifts the mindset of game production, to a greater or lesser degree. At its least-harmless, it's about offering people extra options and choices in a game, and using social pressure (i've got a more exclusive hat!) to encourage purchasing. At its worst, it changes the focus of the entire game from 'how do we make this something people want to buy and play' to 'how can we create and maximise a continuing profit-stream from this product'. EA has milked The Sims for years using the latter model.

The 'Adobe Cloud' stuff discussed on the podcast is another excellent example of the same technique. People used to buy full Adobe CS in one pack. They'd get all the products for a one-time cost, use them or not, and then buy a later version a few years down the line. But now, what Adobe are counting on are businesses buying the full suite for their employees on a recurring subscription, only using one or two programs, and only using them a few times a week or month. They still pay a recurring fee to rent everything, but they don't use most of the software. It's brilliant, and they're going to make an absolute fortune on businesses paying for software they don't use and don't need.

Ok. Rant over. Please go about your business.

SrA: Two other examples for you. Sleeping Dogs & Saint's Row. i think both are great games, but their 'DLC' is some of the most blatant attempts at nickel-and-diming consumers i've ever seen. Saint's Row The Third even had a paid DLC to enable cheats. Remember when cheats were just built into a game, instead of something you had to buy?

Sorry if I seem to keep harping on about this, but it really bugs me when people who don't seem to know the full debate around DLC and micro-transactions treat everyone who isn't a fan of them as if they're idiots or petty whiners. Just because someone doesn't know what the concerns are doesn't mean they aren't legitimate.

Why do you assume "Jack will never read this"?

    • SrA

I agree with the DLC thing... Except my concern is that developers/production studios will have start to think (if they already haven't) "what can we leave out of release so people will pay more for them?".

I'm kind of shocked Burnie hasn't really weighed in on DLC. He has stated in earlier podcasts that if he pays for something, he has the right to sell it if he wants to. He is a big proponent of lending, selling and trading games. DLC doesn't allow for that like physical media does. You can go and buy a physical 360 disc, get some DLC for it, and you can sell the disc but are left with the DLC.

I used to hear the argument that studios used DLC as a push against piracy, but it has become a way of milking as much as they can from people. I'll use one of my favorite games, Borderlands 2, as an example for the next points: Yes, DLC is optional, and when it is a complete campaign add-on (Assault on Dragon Keep, Captain Scarlett, etc), that is kind of cool, and prolongs the shelf-life of the game. But then there are flat-out money grabbers, like the $0.99 skin packs (which there are 30 of them, by the way!) that I just find are examples of just nickel-and-diming customers. $30 in DLC just for character skins? That is how much the base game alone costs! And while I am using Borderlands 2 as an example, there are plenty of other examples of studios "crippling" a game but releasing the "fix" for it in DLC. Dead Space 3, using those little scavenger-bots, can be excruciatingly long. But, EA did that so they can sell the $5 add-on to speed them up. And, since they were at it, they decided to sell more DLC for the bots to give it a "personality".

Going back, these are examples that reflect upon studios releasing DLC of things that simply aren't excusable. $30 for skins shows a blatant disrespect for the customers. $5 to fix a built-in crippling point shows complete contempt. With the rise of independent developers who are making games that are less expensive with larger fanbases and longer shelf-life than AAA titles, studios had better do something to entice people back, not force them away by having additional entry fees to enjoy the game the way it was supposed to be.

In regards to SteamOS and the Steam Box what I see Valve doing is trying to push PC gaming away from Windows as well as making PC games playable in a living room environment. Gabe has already made it clear that he isn't a fan of Windows 8. All of the talking points that people seem to complain about are the compromises that Valve are having to make to ensure the success of the device. They aren't their to replace the current way you play PC games. They only exist to make sure that the device doesn't fail. If they just jumped ship to Linux initially without any of the streaming functionality the device would be so useless that it would fail almost immediately. Another example is the controller, they are having to design a controller which will allow almost all PC games (even those without official controller support) to be played with a controller. That is why the design is so different. Bringing PC games to the living room also means making them playable.

"If they just jumped ship to Linux initially without any of the streaming functionality the device would be so useless that it would fail almost immediately."

It's pretty weird that they completely forgot about that streaming functionality when they were talking about it.

Their using Linux software they will be able to do it. Just a matter of programming it right and getting the bugs and glitches worked out at this point.

  • Kastastu

If micro-transactions are strictly cosmetic(personalized) I have no problems with. Buy all the guns day one, big problem for the shear fact that most of the people that do will have an overwhelming advantage when facing off against a person who 1. Just started the game, and 2. doesn't have and higher level guns. Like what ever happened to YOU have to unlock shit you get better through PLAYING the game how it's supposed to be played and not just run and gun because you can and they can't. Play tactical and smart rather than stupid and brute force.

    • Kastastu

You are right about people not having the same amount of time to play the games as others. That can be solved by a simple code added into the matchmaking lobby system; such as adding in a level bracket to separate, and putting a team of three of four against another team of three of four with the same level distribution, however doesn't work like that apparently. Then putting another code for solo entries that scans for weapons unlocked that would say bump you into the next bracket because you have weapons for that bracket, so that you play against either skilled opponents with the weapons in that bracket or play against better opponents with the same weapons. Those suggestions would help the matchmaking system IN all cases, but would slow down game ques a lot more than they would help the cause.

    • YMIHere

You still run into the same problem when faced against people who have nothing to do except unlock those weapons as fast as possible. I have plenty of time for gaming currently, but I sympathize with those who don't so I don't see it as a problem for them to have the option to skip the unlocking progress. The problem comes in for me when they make the unlocking progress ridiculously tedious to drive sales. I'm not going to be someones punching bag for months so a publisher can make money, and I'm certainly not going to pay my way out of being one while telling said publisher it's a great business model.

    • Kastastu

Jack is spot on about the hypocrisy in micro-transactions. It's not even cosmetic fluff with GTAO, but they still don't get anywhere near the same hate. I'm in the same boat as Ryan, if I don't feel like I'm getting the full game without them then it's something I just don't want a part of.
