I always like what bungie did with halo reach. It was around for a limited time and gave you an idea for the game. Its different from the games you were talking about but the beta was planned and had a time table that wasnt very long. Enough for people to play and the developers got feedback from people.

I got nothing against the man, I like Adam and all and he seems extremely knowledgeable in a lot of areas, but gotta reel him in a little.
Needs a little Twitter training as he's a bit long-winded smiley6.gif , which I don't hold against him as I have the same damn problem, but it changes the podcast pace a bit when the conversation isn't switching back and forth between people as often as it usually does. Pick and choose sir. Still love it otherwise!

As an afterthought; Ryan or Gus challenging what Adam is saying, regardless of him sounding completely right, helps a lot, but on the other hand, Gus or Ryan will start to challenge and Adam will rush to jam in the rest of what he's saying in. Again, trying to be constructive, smiley12.gif Adam, always like seeing new faces on the casts.

I think the Patch needs to get a more widely set table so the cameras can get better angles on the two outside people. The table looks so crowded and the angles on the two sitting on the outside of the table are really terrible.

Whining about early access makes no sense at all. Who is forcing people to opt in? If you do not want to play the game in an unfinished state, then don't. If you only want to play polished games the solution is simple.
Stop pre-ordering games. Stop buying games on day one. Stop signing up for alpha and beta testing. Be a responsible consumer and make informed decisions.
Selling access to beta/alpha is a great consumer friendly way to generate extra revenue to be able to afford that extra level of polish on your game. If you do not like it, it's very easy to not take part.

Pretty sure that the "leaked document" regarding Fallout 4 is just the fan-fiction script written by the hoaxer. He said he was going to upload it and it wouldn't surprise me if someone has begun to spread the rumor that it's "real".

why not release the developing games as an alpha in an episodic format, starting the game at the beginning, then adding content linearly until the "end" of the game is added, at which point the game is in a finished format for purchase by people who don't want an episodic format with multiple bugs.

I'm worried about battlefront. I truly am. I am super excited about it being made! But EA... With their rep, Disney really could have done better.

    • SteveEsquire FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

That and they make some poor decisions on games. They've done a lot right the past few years, but when they mess something up, the mess up bad. This was a perfect opportunity for BF to gain some ground. People are moving away from CoD and with Titanfall coming out, this was EA's chance to prove that BF is a very strong franchise that won't be going anywhere. Unfortunately, as we all know, the game has been taking a lot of heat because it glitches constantly. While different copies seem to have different issues, so far my copy will quit on consecutive Conquest games, lost all of my brother's campaign progress, and has had multiple, smaller issues throughout multiplayer (playing on X1). It really sucks for EA that they messed this up, because once Titanfall and Destiny come out, both CoD and BF will be seeing a massive drop in sales. It really makes me curious where Battlefront will fit in to the mix, and if it will even work.

    • Burnt2Shreds Metal Gear

I was super disappointed by how Battlefield 4 turned out to be a glitchy mess. I was waiting for the longest time, too; I was expecting more of the same awesomeness that I got with Battlefield 3, having clocked so many hours into that already. At this point I'm thinking about returning my copy of Battlefield 4 and waiting to buy it used on Xbox One in about a year see if time to fix things and the new console (I have it on 360 now) will make it any better. But yeah, by that time I'll have my hands on the Destiny and Titanfall, so why would I even bother? I'm pretty sure those games won't be buggy messes; Bungie and all the former IW employees know how to make things work.

Actually, that brings up a good question: All the previous Battlefield games I played on my 360 worked fine. How did they screw up with Battlefield 4 so hard?

Beta means the same things to developers as it always has, that definition has not changed. For developers, Beta used to, and still does, means, "A game that is feature complete, asset complete, and content complete. A Beta should be at most 10% different than the Gold (release) build". There are always some exceptions, but if you ask the majority of developers, this is how they'd define it.

However, Beta for marketers has taken on a new meaning. The meaning for marketers and some publishers (and some developers who are also publishers like Mojang) is, "Anything complete enough that we can release publicly and it won't break (with a Type A crash). If the public can playtest it and/or the company can make money off of it". This is done to generate buzz, get some free QA, and to generate money and is really only feasible in this current age because of the internet.

And yet Beta is just a term for a stage of development. You don't say human and expect a single-personality mono-tonal being who represents an entire race.

Starbound was offered as Early Access/Beta in which there were at last ten different places and times that the developers stated that the beta was meant for testing of features and technical constraints.

If people are having a difficult time with early and endgame content then that means the beta is doing its job and informing the developers that there are some much needed changes (e.g levels 1-100 replaces with 1-10. Adam is mostly incorrect; there have only ever been additions made to content - never any reductions. It is the ignorance of [some of] the playerbase that creates the arguments in today's episode of The Patch.
If he had any knowledge or understanding of what he was talking about (even just glancing at the official webpage, which would have taken a few seconds at most) then most of his arguments would have been invalid.

As you mentioned there are many exceptions to this. Some developers just don't care and leave their community uninformed. Chucklefish is not one of those companies, every step of the way they have kept their players in the know.

P.S - For those curious, the tutorial system is very rudimentary. Also there are only 4 or 5 quests (the tutorial) that should take no longer than 5 minutes to reach the last one. It is only on the last quest that you must use your own logic to realize that you need some upgrades. If Gus was spending hours on it he is doing it wrong.

      ---

That being said, everyone has the right to an opinion - even if it is uninformed. Adam did an awesome on this podcast, would love for him to be on it again. Ryan and Gus, awesome as always.

Starbound isn't really charging you for early access. The are letting you pre-order the game, and you get free access to the beta.

Also they warned that there would be wipes early on, so if you didn't want to experience them, you should have waited.

Do you really think that this administration (which has been friendly to groups like the Muslim Brotherhood, who help fund al Queda, and sought to intervene in Syria on the side of the rebels who were made up of factions of al Queda) is concerned about terrorists? Given that the IRS under this admin has been targeting groups which believe in a smaller government, the Constitution, and some dumb thing called Liberty, and that the law enforcement arms of this admin have been saying that groups with those particular beliefs are extremists.

The NSA is sweeping WoW and XBL not looking for "extremists" as we've previously defined them (religious extremists looking to kill civilians), they're looking for extremists as the IRS and DHS have defined them, the small government people. With an administration like Obama's which is trying to expand into every facet of our lives, the people who want a limited government are the real threats. And I've encountered more than a few on XBL.

But why are you griping about the NSA sweeping WoW ad XBL when Google has already given them a back door to sweep everyone's emails? I haven't heard a peep about that. Or about the giant facility built in Utah to store all the cellphone and email data the NSA has been collecting.

I care about the awards equally to the reveals. If not more so. I think it's a perfect combination. All they need to do is have a small audience, have matt and trey parker be the hosts and it would be perfect.

The problem I have with Starbound is the severe difficulty spike in the early missions. Having spent too much time in Terraria, it was simple enough for me to get through the beginning of the game. But then the distress beacon mission comes along and suddenly it's like, is it even possible to progress without other people? The UFO kicks my ass every time, despite upgraded gear and weapons.

I mean, it's fine, I'll just get my friends who are also playing Starbound to help. It's just a little jarring to come across something like this so early in the game when in comparable games like Terraria and Minecraft, battles that typically require more than one person don't come until near the "end" of the game.
