Multiplayer Achievements have a shelf life, determined by how long people play the multiplayer. I can't 100% the Assassins Creed games because no one plays Brotherhood multiplayer anymore (I was late to the series). As a result I have decided that I will count only single player achievements towards my 100%.
Also co-op achievements in single player games (Fable 2 & 3) I understand there is a co-op component to your game but I don't want to play it with other people (I'm antisocial and selfish) If there was a separate co-op segment then fine but to have it where you have to get people into your game that annoys me.
The play against Dev/someone who has played dev achievements. I live in New Zealand, the chances of me getting these are slim (I got one once because someone with said achievement moved here) It's a whole range of achievements that are nearly impossible to get if you live outside USA/Europe/Asia (where most major developers are). You see the problem, an internationally released game with an achievement that can't be got by some people.
I want to be able to 100% my games. The feeling when I finally did so in Mass Effect (my first 100%) was just amazing. There are more amazing titles out there than I have time to play (then there's the times I want to go back and play something old) To be restricted by time or location is an annoyance. Just because your series gets mad reviews, doesn't mean I'm going to run down to the shop on release day to buy it (usually I can't afford it)
As for DLC, I like going back through games, reliving the story, but having to go back after I have finished a game just because now there is something in the middle of it I have to do, feels more like a chore than enjoying a game. When new DLC drops I usually start a series from the beginning again just so that I don't feel like I'm starting in the middle of the story. Like they said at first when you jump back on your last save you feel dazed and confused. I still haven't played The Citadel DLC for ME3 yet, because I haven't been able to get back into the series again (Mass Effect 10 completions, ME2 5 completions, ME3 3 completions. That's a lot of time as Commander Shepard) I'm missing 2 Achievements in ME2 and until Citadel dropped I was only missing 1 in ME3 (That hijack one is hard)
And I'm done. If you read this whole thing, give your self an achievement.

They're totally right about Half Life 3. At this point there is no way it will be able to live up to the hype. No matter how good it is, the fans are going to hate it, because they've built up such unrealistically high expectation over the years. Which is probably why Valve is so reticent to actually make it.

Well, that and the fact that they realized they could make a lot more money a lot easier by just building a zombie game instead and then release that same game twice.

    Achivement Manifesto suggestions:
smiley9.gifAll collectibles should strongly relate to the storyline, and affect the gameplay.
Example of good collectibles: 20 powerups.
Example of bad collectibles: 1000 useless items.
smiley9.gifThere's no need for achievements for completing each individual level.
One achievement for completing the campaign (on each difficulty) is sufficient.
smiley9.gifNo achievements that take a ridiculously long time, but require little or no skill.
Example of doing this wrong: Blood Money in CS:GO. I have played 132 hours of CS:GO and have only earned 5,788,100 of the 50,000,000 required to get this achievement. At this rate I will need to play for a total of 1140 hours. I would have to play for 3 hours every single day for 365 days to reach that.
smiley9.gifEvery game should have one achievement that is excessively difficult. Just one to challenge the most dedicated players, and be a real badge of honour among those who have played the game.
This only applies to games that are meant to be a challenge to hardcore gamers. Obviously there are kids games, and casual games that aren't meat to be challenging at all.
Example of a great challenge: Mile High Club in COD4.
Example of too many great challenges: all the Portal minimum steps challenges.
smiley9.gifDLC should be treated as separate games, with separate achievement lists.
Example of doing it wrong: Bioshock Infinite (PC) is telling me that I have completed 50 of 60 achievements. The 10 remaining are in the unreleased DLC!

There is something I would like to add to the manifesto. No more achievements that will end up taking you 3 years to unlock. Take a look at the Perfect Dark Zero Achievements. You have all these ridiculous achievements like, get 1000 kills with this type of gun, that type of gun and every other type of weapon in the game. On top of that you have achievements that make you play 1000 games in every game type. I understand that this was a launch title and developers probably didn't realize how fast games would come and go like they do today. Gears of War had a similar trend with killing ungodly amounts of enemies and playing 1999 games of multiplayer.

Tying into the collectibles achievement. For the love of all things good in the world... STOP MAKING ME LOOK FOR 8000 COLLECTABLES. The Crackdown series is a great example of that. There were 800 orbs you had to find in the first one and 925 in the second one. I think 50 is plenty.

Also tying into what you guys were saying about what should the difficulty achievements amount to percentage wise. It really depends on the game. I am a proud bullet sponge. Games with regenerative health like Halo and Call of Duty, I can breeze through easily on the hardest difficulty, but when it comes to games like Stranglehold, Quake 4, and Ninja Gaiden2, where you have to find health as you go, I'm up shit creek without a paddle. With that said, perhaps, difficulty achievements for games with regenerative health would be worth less than the games where you have to scavenge for health as you go.

How about, no achievements that require you to do something outside the game, such as the "Sellout" achievement for Skate 3 where you have to go to a website and make a graphic and import it to your game. Sounds easy enough, but the website went down and the achievement is now unobtainable. This is my last achievement in the "Skate" series and I can never complete it :/

    Achievement Guidelines:

    Base # of Achievements: 40-50
After DLC # of Achievements: 80-100, should not be more than double the base
Campaign Achievements: 50-70% of gamerscore (purely completing missions and difficulty)
    Multiplayer Achivements: 10-15% of gamerscore
Misc/Feats of strength/Easter eggs Achievements: Remaining amount
    Achievements should have progress bars.

I agree with secret achievements, difficulty achievements, no gloryhole achievments, negative achievements, DLC not taking away 100% the base game, no luck based achievements, no crowbar achievements

Feats of strength should be attainable in campaign, and/or in online and offline multiplayer, same with easter eggs

No more than 10-15% of the games gamerscore should consist of multiplayer achievements. You should get these in the natural progression of the multiplayer experience, almost every game has its own multiplayer ranking system. You should not have to go out of your way to get these.

If DLC is a purely multiplayer add-on, then it should have achievements for finding easter eggs in the maps, similar to the skulls in Halo 3's mythic map pack. You should not have to perform certain feats in the particular maps, they should be geared towards introducing the community to the additional content. And if their are feats of strength, they should not be on specific maps, or specific to the DLC content, unless it is easter eggs.

No achievement should be so hard that it forces people to boost it, or they should reward the player with a proportional amount of GS. Examples of this is normally finishing the game on the hardest difficulty, especially halo reach where you got 150 GS for completing it on legendary alone. It should give a reasonable amount of motivation to go after it.

Achivements should have a good description of how to attain it.

Getting achievements should unlock special things in game, Halo 3, Halo Reach, and Halo 4 has done this well, unlocking special armor for multiplayer by doing things in the campaign.

There should not be any achievements for finding a ridiculous amount of collectables, should not exceed 50 collectables,

Minigame achievements should only be for trying to play the minigame, not doing particular things in the minigames.

    Additional thoughts/suggestions:
Xbox should have a top achievements on our gamercards or something that highlights our greatest achievements (heard this in a previous podcast a long time ago, thought it was worth mentioning again)
Xbox should, with the sacrifice of GS, allow us to delete games from our history even if we have earned achievements in the game

For me, the goal of achievements should be to get players to experience everything that the game has to offer.

So far, I mostly agree with the rules. The big thing for me is that I think games with strong multiplayer experiences should have a strong multiplayer achievement presence. The way this is currently handled is flawed though.

I think the achievements should be partitioned. There should be completely separate lists for single player and multiplayer. The same should go for each DLC that comes out too. That way you won't lose 100% in a game each time a DLC comes out. Also, if you're a single player or multiplayer gamer more than the other, you won't get screwed over by your gaming preferences.

Then there are the insanely difficult or time consuming multiplayer achievements (single player shouldn't have insanely difficult or time consuming achievements) like Gears of War's "Seriously" achievements. But I think these should be handled within the game itself and you should get an in game award that sets you apart from every other player in the match. Something like a new skin or weapon or whatever. Something where people see you and say, "Well, I'm dead..."

I'm all for secret achievements, but the description of the secret achievement should give a hint on how to unlock it. Secret achievements should not be used to hide spoilers because you shouldn't be putting a spoiler in an achievement description anyway. Putting a spoiler in an achievement description serves zero purpose except to ruin a game for anyone going through your achievement list. Secret achievements should give a challenge to obtaining the achievement. Like if the description said, "You greedy little..." then you would know that it had something to do with money or taking something from someone. I mean, if you're going to make an achievement secret, you should give us a clue on how to get it. Currently, marking an achievement (that doesn't hide a spoiler) is basically just saying, "You've got the internet, right?" That's dumb.

This one is something that, I'm sure, will never happen, but it would be nice. I would like to be able to use my gamer score for a game to purchase related items from the Microsoft Store. But only for that game. Like, if I get 1000 GS in Fallout 3, let me buy 1000 MP worth Fallout 3 related items from the store. It's $12.50 to give to a devoted fan of the game. Also, though it would be nice, I'm not at all talking about DLC or in-game items. I'm talking about GamerPics or Avatar clothes or other useless digital swag. The stuff we're expected to shell out 2 or 3 bucks for. This system would allow developers to reward devoted players at nearly no cost.

Alright, I've got one last point but this is a big one for me. Let me use the achievement icons as my gamer picture. The facts that this isn't a thing, is mind blowing. The icons are the same size and achievements are all about showing off how awesome you are, right? Well, if I've got the "Mile High Club" achievement from Modern Warfare, I want everyone to know that I did that. Currently, no one will see the achievement's you're most proud of unless they scour your list and look themselves. This is just a really simple concept that seems like it would take relatively minor effort to allow. Or at the very least, I'd like a Trophy Case. A spot right on the front of my gamer card that showcases 5 or so achievements that I want to showcase. Something that makes it so everyone that looks at my gamer card know what I've accomplished. Currently, achievements are more or less for personal satisfaction, which is nice, but I want to use them to brag with. The main reason I ended up going back and beating Halo Reach on single player Legendary was because it was killing me that everyone could see that I had only beat it on Normal. After the fun I had with that, I went back and beat Halo 3 and ODST on Legendary too. It would just be really nice to show off what I've achieved as a gamer.

But, anyway, those are my thoughts on achievements. I apologize for the length of it. smiley0.gif

    My Achievement/Trophy guidelines:

    - Online Achievement/Trophy should be attained as introduction to online (as said by the patch, starting online) and acquiring an improved item. Weather that is a weapon, armour, ect.

    - [If above guideline not applicable] Online Achievement/Trophies could also be unlocked in single player campaign through a duel requirement.

    Example are:

ME3 achievement: Tourist. Requirement: Complete one multiplayer match or two N7 missions.

ME3 achievement: Almost There. Requirement: Reach level 15 in mulitplayer of level 50 in single-player.

Mass effect 3 has a perfect means of getting multiplayer achievement as it provides the opportunity for a sole campaign player to get a seemingly impossible achievement.

I agree that beating the game should get you at least half the achievements.
    - Getting every achievement should unlock a "platinum trophy" for Xbox. There could be one for the originals and a higher tier "unobtainiam trophy" for getting the dlc achievements too.

-the number of achievements a game launches with should be regulated.I agree that beating the game should get you at least half the achievements.

    My achievement guidelines:
No achievements along the lines of the "Seriously..." achievements from the Gears of War series that require you to grind and farm for days to get such a stupidly high number of kills that you could never come close to even running through the story mode several times.

If there are more than a certain number of collectibles in a game, it should not be required to get every one of them. 20 hidden objects in a game is fine, especially as they talked about, if you can go back and get them without restarting the whole game. 200 is a bit much.

nothing really to do with the achievement side of things i think what they mentioned covered everything i would like in achievements but what i would like to see with achievements on the Xbox One would be an achievement score board between friends and a way to challenge friends to an Achievement race on a game. i know people will say you can do this anyway with out any need of it being on the console but it would at least make things more interesting if they integrated it in such a way that would make getting achievements more fun and like Michael said would make it more sweet to send challenges to friends to do hard achievements like finishing a level with out killing anyone or completing a level really fast like in COD: MW. this is my personal opinion on achievements and would really make me want to start getting achievements more personally. i think this could be improved upon too

I don't think the manifesto thingy is going in the right direction. Achievements should be obtainable, but it still should require you to achieve. Completing the campaign, I'd say 25% of achievements at most. The rest should be about playing the game differently, do side stuff, find easter eggs and basically explore what the game has to offer. The balance between SP and MP depends on the game. You can't decently expect a game to have 80% campaign-related achievements when the campaign is basically anecdotal and vice-versa.
In a nutshell, you should have to do stuff you wouldn't do if you strictly followed the rules, or push you to achieve some simple feats (like getting 10 kills in a row, or being MVP in a MP game). That being said, it shouldn't require unreasonable amount of skill, practice and/or patience, nor should it rely on blind luck and random occurrences, nor should it be locked if you play private games with friends.

How would you feel about trophies and achievements being different, instead of just cloned to each console. Additionally a rule, more like guideline, I'd add is that achievements should not be shared so openly on the internet before the launch date. It's never happened through AH but I've had a game spoiled because I was reading an article on it and before I realised it I'd read a major spoiler tied to an achievement.

    My achievement/trophy guidelines:

-Additional accessories that aren't bundled with the game shouldn't be required to get all the achievements.

-Multiplayer achievements should unlock automatically after closing servers or should be no longer required to get a platinum trophy.

-There shouldn't be any luck based achievements in both singleplayer and multiplayer.

-Games should earn more GS/trophy points if they are very hard or very long.

  • seanphed

I personally believe that completing a game should only get you about 25% or so of the achievements. Like Michael said, I prefer it when the achievements are attained by doing an action outside the normal game play. That being said, often times this can be done wrongly and the achievement is either very lame or way to hard to get. So it's very difficult to make a lot of achievements like that, that are good.

They didn't say just the beating the game, they said beating the game on the hardest possible difficulty level. Which for plenty of people would be quite the achievement. I always play on the hardest difficulty and i think you deserve to have a good chunk of the achievement when you finish the game.
