Kinda like having Burnie here for this one actually. His personality for these particular subjects is more striking to me. KING is really ridiculous at this point. Agreeing with Ryan about single-player style campaign. It really helps draw someone into the world. Some gamers don't need that sort of pull, but I know I do. As always, wonderful Patch session!

Awesome like just about every Patch. Can't believe you guys have been doing it for almost a year now! Keep it up!

Edit: Oh, and 100% agreed with Ryan. Titanfall's 'campaign' was a confusing clusterfuck of extra audio bombarding you while you're trying to focus on staying alive and doing decently. I think Titanfall would do fantastically with a co-op horde mode or something similar, and the campaign would've fit pretty well in that, honestly.

As lame as it is, Candy Crush actually does have a sort of "saga" element to it. Every 10 or so puzzles unlocks a new part to the story in which the little candy girl completes a new quest.

You're wrong about the LoL characters. A character's appearance, voice, and mannerisms are very important, and particularly unappealing characters (like Urgot) are consistently the least unpopular, even when they were powerful. Some people become very partial to their favorite characters and become quite upset if the spirit of the character is changed.

Also, Case Zero was FIVE DOLLARS. It was great.

Indeed. A company who's revenue is so focused on a single point is too frail. As soon as Candy Crush loses popularity, they'll have almost nothing, and that can happen very quickly. Zynga learned that lesson when they bought Draw Something.

I wish I watched this live. They literally just changed a LoL champion's skin (the character's name is Heimerdinger) and people went nuts. Tons of hate and tons of love dealing with it.

Also, now that I watched the whole thing, I have to agree with many of Burnie's points dealing with Project Spark. That's actually the most upsetting thing for me though. The game is soooooo in depth and so detailed, that I would've been much happier if everything was just included in a $20 bundle. The problem with microtransactions is that they add up so fast. If I wanted to play as a squire with a sword, I'd have to pay $15 (at least). I'm not saying the game isn't good, I just think once people get their hands on it and see the infamous "two types of currency", then they'll completely forget about the game. Console gamers have an enormous hate towards microtransactions and MS might have to do a massive update like they and Turn 10 had to do with Forza 5. The game is a confusing mix of having no limits and having tons of limits at the same time. I'd love to mess around with it more (and I'll definitely give it more tries) but I'm just so confused as to what I can actually use without having to pay or unlock it. Also, as I said in my other comment, the tutorial was very frustrating for some reason. I watch tutorials for fun and learned almost everything I could about photoshop on youtube, and I still got lost. So much seems to be hidden behind menus that I just get overwhelmed. I've even taken a computer science class and know basic "If, Then" statements, but I just didn't get anything out of the tutorial besides being able to make a character jump and attack.

The replacing Ra with Ba thing actually happened in League of Legends. The unpopular champion Trundle was taken and stripped of his heroic lore, morbid appearance and quirky personality and replaced with what is essentially Troll Hitler. This fit the new plot revision with the Nordic style lands, but people complained quite a lot. His skills were untouched, he just looked different, had different lore and said different things. They stopped when they realized the new Trundle was funnier.

Ryan is wondering what Popcap might do that is "evil"?

They already did it. It's called Plants vs Zombies 2. They basically changed the game so much from the original release, and update it so infrequently now that they've broken the game. They haven't even added what they promised they'd do about 6 months ago. Now they're just throwing those fans aside in favour of the shooter - which looks fun, but I feel really short-changed by them.

It doesn't surprise me that titanfall 360 is delayed. The xbox one version appeared to bring xbox live to its knees. Add to that problems I have noticed with Battlefield 4 and PvZ Garden Warfare and EA's servers might not be able to handle a 360 release.

    Regarding Plot:
As Burnie pointed out, certain genres are more story/narrative/plot driven than others. Games like Last of us vs LoL, obviously TLOU has far more fleshed out characters, better story, narrative, and plot that defines the characters. LoL, the characters are as was said in the video, simple a weapon to be used.

Some Genres would not *exist* if there wasn't a narrative or plot in them, others don't need them, and Riot games is one company that doesn't need writers or a story behind their game.

True, Alex. It is so frustrating to listen to Mainstream media constantly compare mobile gaming to console gaming to PC gaming as if they're all on the same level— when we all know that mobile gaming is not even in the same universe as console gaming, let alone PC.

It would be nice but I won't be really satisfied until this whole social media/mobile app bubble bursts. It's been way out of hand for far too long. It's literally investors trading money with each other and pretending what they're doing makes any sense at all.

One of the key points mentioned in a recent Steam Dev talk was the fact that there's still a lack of any AAA games programmed with the Oculus Rift in mind as the primary input device. Naturally, due to financial reasons, that makes perfect sense....especially since it's still in Dev Kit v1.0 mode until July...and even then it'll only be v2.0...but that means for now most of the games that people have been able to test the Rift in are simply games that have had their input and graphics ported to the Rift.

Ported games, like Team Fortress 2 are "neat" to play a few times with the headset, but overall still provide very rigid and unnatural movement. The best experience will most likely come from a racing or flying game where you remain seated and all of the input is specifically designed for VR (or I suppose you could always have a Left 4 Dead game where you play as a guy in a wheelchair...that'd be pretty intense, haha). Also, the positional awareness in v2 is a huge improvement over v1, so while I'll say it's still a long ways off from being perfect, I believe this tech is here to stay.

Plot, even in movies and books, isn't actually memorable in most stories we love. The LoL guy is right: it is the characters we like. The plot is the conflict that tests the characters and reveals them to us. I love RvB, but I know what happens in it and I'm still watching it ten times over because I like the characters and the humor. Stories that rely on plot alone, The Sixth Sense and other M. Night twisters, we don't watch them again. They're big twists and enjoyable, but once we know it, why are we watching again? Generally we're not because there's too little there to hold our interest.

That's why when people complain about spoilers I get furious. Why do you expect a single point in the story to matter more than everything else that cannot be spoiled for you? If you're enjoying a story solely for twists, you are missing the majority of the quality in your content.

Ryan raises a great point about VR support. The one thing that bugs me about gaming on a television is the limited vision. There is no peripheral, fish eye view. It's a static, square image that I need to move with an analogue stick. My natural eyes see WAY more than what's squarely in front of me. I would be 100 times more immersed in a game if I was allowed to just look left and right with my own eyes and see shapes/images in my peripheral vision. It really seems to be the next step in game immersion, without being incredibly gimmicky. It can be argued that it's a gimmick, I see it as the next step forward from being an image projected on your television. Rather than stare at a world floating inside a square across your living room, you're actually in it. You can see and explore with your eyes, not strictly with an analogue stick.

I see the gimmicky side of things when you start throwing in the omnidirectional treadmills and wii motes but something as simple as allowing me to see further than a square image is enough for me to be immersed. Even if sight is still mostly controlled by an analogue, the ability to have peripheral vision and even to look around/swivel your head would be enough to satisfy me. Keep the reticule or point of target static but allow me to see my surroundings past a square. I just want my screen to mimic my eyes, like Ryan says. Competitively, I would stick to a square screen, at least that's what I think would still have the advantage. I can see your aim getting thrown off as your head will naturally sway and jerk in tense situations.

Some peoples greatest worry is looking like an idiot, but the Wii already trained us to not care. If people can get used to siblings flailing their arms wildly, they can get used to people aimlessly looking around a room. Gus does raise a good point about sealing yourself off from the world. It does seem odd in that sense (not that people typically enjoy watching you hog a T.V. with your video games.)

Yeah you bring up some really good points. Also that's pretty impressive that the OR has 110 degrees. Hopefully when they release the full thing for retail they can up it even more. I think Burnie put it perfectly: When you mess with how the game is presented to the player, you're either going to win big or lose big. Another thing is like Gus says, putting things on might get tacky eventually. I'm still leaning more toward Gus's comparison to GH and Rock Band, but I'll be the first to admit that it could actually change the way we play games from now on. The only problem is, I like to drink soda, text, read something, talk, browse the internet, etc. while playing. Taking a screen off my face every time I want to look elsewhere might get irritating. Really curious to see how this plays out.

      @SteveEsquire

So it looks like the VR technology I'd like to see doesn't quite exist. I've seen the 90 degree fov thrown around but I assumed that meant for each eye, accumulating for 180 degrees. Not sure what that meant in my mind but I picture having vision outside of your square projected image. What I do know exists, just not so sure about the gaming VR headsets, is that they have the ability to track your eye movement. While you may not have wide peripheral vision, the device will track where you're looking and the camera can follow you to what you're concentrating on. There was a pretty cool tech demo of this happening with Infamous Second Son on a square television. I'm sure something similar exists within a VR headset.

Rather than delete everything, here's a quick edit before I hit the submit button. It looks like occulus rift has 110 degrees of view (horizontally and vertically). Far peripherals aren't as important as what's more discernible in your immediate peripheral. There will be peripheral view on both devices, just not the extremes. I think the largest challenge they need to tackle is the distortion of image. I've heard things look a bit odd/fuzzy and the colors aren't always right. It's a step towards future technology and I don't quite see the VR technology as a one off idea. I think it will find itself achieving mainstream use. 3D has been regarded as gimmicky since I can remember and it refuses to go away. I'm willing to argue, as much as I hate to put those stupid glasses on (I'm with ya on this Gus), it's a mainstream technology. I feel I'll accept VR like I accept 3D. I think it's a fantastic idea, I just don't want to have to throw something silly on my face to experience immersion. I talk the talk but don't always walk it.

I'm not too sure what the OR's FOV is, but the Sony VR is supposed to have 90 degrees FOV when humans have almost 180. So OR and other VR's might not actually solve the square FOV that a TV has. That's another PC master race thing as well. You can easily change FOV (if not you can in the code) and you can also set up additional monitors easily. You can set up multiple TV's, but that'd be very expensive and take up a ton of room. I'm really on the fence with the OR and stand by much of what Gus says about it. Even in the Joel and Adam Outlast Let's Play an actual quote from Joel is "the goal is to get this thing off my head." I'm really curious to try it, but the "wow" factor might fade fast and it might be more of a hassle than an increase in immersive gameplay. That seems to be the main debate as well. Lastly, I'm worried about lawsuits. People tripping over stuff, falling into water (because that always manages to happen somehow) and eye strain. Having a screen that close to your eyes cannot be good. I get eye strain from playing on my laptop, and that's with an easy ability to look away. Being inclosed against a screen could really do some damage to your eyes. Overall, my question is "is it worth it?" If it's around $300, I'd most likely save up for a PC or PS4 (or maybe another X1 lol). I don't know if VR would add to my gaming experience more than another whole console or platform would.

I actually have 6 Sonos speakers set up in my house. Basically, what we use it for is to access the entire family's iTunes library. We have one computer set up at the music computer, so it has everyone's songs. This is pushed to the network, which the Sonos system connects to. Then, on an app for the phone or desktop, you can select and play any song in the library, in any room. And it all works through the wifi network, so you don't need to use bluetooth. Plus, you can set alarms to wake you up to certain songs, albums, artists, or radio stations. It can also access iheart radio, Amazon music, Spotify, and Pandora. It's a pretty awesome set up.

    (Haven't watched it yet).
From what I played of Project Spark, I was very disappointed. Odd controls and for some reason the tutorial frustrated me. Also, the game seems to be filled with items you have to pay for. I really thought it was going to be a huge boost towards free content on the Xbox One but I was terribly wrong. I guess I'll see if they feel the same way, but so far I'd give it around a 4/10. There's so much opportunity but it just feels like you're being held back, and on a game where you're supposed to have limitless boundaries, that's a huge upset. I mean, you have to pay for a sword to use with a character....

    • SteveEsquire FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

You can be an animal lol but yeah it seems like you have to choose a weapon and the sword is locked. I think your idea of a retail-like release would have been best or just a full free game with Gold. People are comparing it to Trials, and that probably what it should have cost to buy it. As it stands, it'd be $60 just for 5-7 characters.

    • SethButtons

So it truly seems like this game is going to gradually update and release for all people. I think it's always been planned as a F2P model but The Patch crew seemed a little unsure of how it would release. If there's already micro transactions, I think it's safe to say it will be free to play and will naturally release just like Minecraft did from "beta to launch."

Do you think the microtransactions are a result of chasing f2p or would it have always been there? Would this game have benefited (at least for us as consumers) if it was a retail release vs. being available for free but with transactions? Can you make your own knight or sword or are those specific items/characters only available as purchases? I just assumed you could craft your own items and make them equip-able with their own traits. I also assumed the same would be for characters. I'm just curious, as I haven't played Project Spark, if these transactions are just shortcuts for the lazy or if you can't have access to certain things without buying them. So let's say I wanted to make my main character a squirrel, would I have to buy some sort of pack, or are there tools I could use to make myself a squirrel?

Your comment makes me incredibly sad, as I was anticipating Project Spark because of it's open creative tools...if what you say is true, it doesn't sound so open to me.

Also, for those of you who don't have the beta yet: the microtransactions scale is high too. There's a ton of locked content and to give you an example: the knight character alone is 20,000 in-game credits (I made about 300 doing the tutorial for about an hour) or $10.00. Just one character is $10.00.

Honestly Titanfall (360) being delayed has simply caused more red flags for me. The company handling it has a history of doing some solid port work and a few decent games but still it has me concerned with the delays. Although I'm kind of in agreement that it is possible MS is asking the 360 version be delayed to sell more X1s.
Also I'm really surprised that Minecraft won't be going to Wii U since that system is ideal for it outside of the PC in my opinion. Oh well.
