That Adam Sandler movie reminds me of the "Raiders of the Lost Arcade" segment of the Futurama episode "Anthology of Interest II".

Gonna catch some hate for this....

This is the first time, I hated Ashley on this podcast...She was quite uninformative and kept switching between nuggets of information and insight with moments of high school girl giggling which was quite annoying.

Though I like her in most videos....

Gotta say first) love the new set (ohhh fancy :P) and then second) come on guys Mega Man, Limbo and Ninja Gaiden had to have been even mentioned when talking about challenging but beloved games. Yeah, loving Trials Fusion right now (I've played both HD and Evo too), the track editor for that will produce some crazy shit-I've already had some good experiences now and I'd only guess it'll get better over time. GTA V only gets me to play with my buddy, who's the only other friend playing it now, on the weekends when they do promos (double XP/GTA$). Other than that, there's nothing to do that I haven't already done in GTA Online and I'd rather invest my time in another game that'll scratch my entertainment itch. Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare is a funny story for me. I picked it up on the 360 and played and loved it from launch day. Then I grabbed a Titanfall Xbox One and played Titanfall for a while yet I too felt a pull back to Garden Warfare. You guys could have also mentioned the game's inclusion of classic modes which eliminates any customization unlocks and gets the core gameplay pure, no pay to win there. I'm also OK with microtransactions for PvZ: GW and think if a game is stellar at launch these companies could do this optional microtransactions later as long as it doesn't interfere with the game or design.

With how much space the new set has, I wonder if they'll expand on their number of hosts or if they'll keep it just to three. I do like the current number, since more would probably drown each other out.

I have to agree with most of what Ryan said about Dark Souls II. I watched my brother play the first one and watched some gameplay on DSII and to me it just feels like a decent game using a "gimmick" to get sales. I'm not saying there's nothing unique about the game, but there doesn't seem to be enough to make it a 9/10 game without using the difficulty to make it seem "unique." It almost feels like the only reason to play the game is to be part of a group of people that get to say "Yay, I beat DSII!" Then you later realize that a million other people beat it too. It's not about how good you are at the game or how much skill you have, it's more about how much time you have and trial and error. Don't get me wrong, a lot of people like that in a game, but for me, there doesn't seem to be enough to make it stand out other than trying to annoy those who play it.

As far as Destiny goes, I'm very back and forth. I don't have high hopes and I'm glad I don't (I really want to be surprised). From all the gameplay I've seen, I'm not too impressed and it seems almost like a confused mixture of Borderlands and Halo. If done correctly, it could be an amazing game, but I'm still not getting my hopes up after so many disappointing MMO games and features on consoles. I'm also a bit confused on how a story is going to be told as well. I have never been blown away (or anything even close to blown away) by a story in an MMO and that worries me a lot. While I love(d) Halo's combat (4 was good but way too fast paced for Halo), the main thing that kept me coming back was the story and customization features. Without a great story, I don't really think people are going to stay on board, so I hope Bungie can finally make me interested in an MMO's story and world. I have faith in Bungie, but I'm making sure that I don't get too comfortable.

Also, I'd love Gilby to be on the Patch to defend DSII, maybe I'm missing something smiley7.gif . Plus I'd like to see his general views on games and the news.

The game is NOT trial and error. The whole prepare to die and difficulty hype is a fucking marketing campaign by Namco and edgy 12 year old kids who like to think of themselves as hardcore just because they beat the game once. Every single danger and attack within the game is telegraphed and foreshadowed. Trial and error style of approach is usually taken by unobservant players. The reason why NPCs sound depressed and dull is because it's the effects of being undead. Once you've spent such a long time being immortal, you start to lose your sense of inner self, as well your own identity and purpose. That's a huge core part of the series. The games are huge metaphor for persevering in a cruel and nihilistic world, and yet still being able to retain a sense of your own purpose. The type of dialogue and writing is meant to enhance the atmosphere and themes of the game. It's fine if you're not into it, but calling it "boring" is completely subjective.

No I haven't, and I'll be the first one to admit that my opinions can be changed, however, I do want to emphasize the words "feel" and "seem" in my comments. I know that playing a game is different from watching it, but that's how I decide on whether or not I'm going to play most games. Almost every game that I haven't liked watching, I don't like playing. I think Fallout 3 is the one game I don't care for watching that I actually enjoy, and that's only because my brother put literally countless hours into that game (at one point, I had all the radio lines and songs completely memorized just from being in the room). So I will admit that I could very well be wrong, but I'm still almost certain that I wouldn't enjoy the game. I don't have the time to die over and over on one part, and I could probably finish 2-4 games that I'd enjoy more in the time it would take me to beat that game (which I probably wouldn't enjoy). I'm a fan of Trails and Super Meat Boy, but both games have a fast restart and quick gameplay. DS just seems too slow for me to be focused on difficulty, and backtracking to recollect my items seems like a horrific hassle that I wouldn't enjoy in the slightest.

Have you actually played Dark Souls though? Watching it is vastly different than playing it. The gameplay is very solid and responsive in comparison to many RPG's that are out there now. It is a test of patience and there is trial and error but it is never to the point where you will feel like it is impossible to beat. There aren't many cheap tricks in the series. There are some parts where enemies will jump out of nowhere but a large part of the game is to teach you to always be aware of your surroundings and to always be on your toes.

It looks really professional, even more so than your old set which looked pretty good too by the way; this new one really differentiates it from the Podcast now. First steps are in some ways the biggest and the hardest but its where you learn how to walk and eventually run. Congratulations @burnie @gus and crew on making this huge leap forward as you have 4 times before, you guys keep getting better and better!

This cast groups is always really great for the patch, wouldn't mind seeing @adam getting on there soon, probably a bit busy with the new site though

I still love Ryan and everyone at RT and AH but I definitely get the feeling that Ryan doesn't quite understand the general concept of the universe of Dark Souls 2. Admittedly, it does not hold your hand in the least bit, you do have to find out almost everything on your own. But the lore and the gameplay are among my favorite of today's games. The added difficulty also increases my sense of accomplishment when I achieve something in the game. You have to take the time and have the patience to learn the intricacies of the game or else you will hate it.

EDIT: I guess I should have finished the entirety of the DkS 2 discussion before I posted.but Ryan...... you've only killed 1 boss in 20 hours? That seems like a huge stretch there. I'm glad you are going to keep playing. I think it may grow on you. Also, for the love of god, DON'T use a mouse and keyboard.

But it's like he said, the NPCs' dialogue is so long and boring that it's hard to stay focused/entertained. When I watched my brother play the first one, it was terribly boring trying to find any interesting points in what they were saying. It almost felt like you were playing as a psychiatrist hearing peoples' depressing stories be told at .5 speed.

Also, the main complaint dealing with the game (besides the graphics because there's a ton of hate surrounding that subject) is that the game is just trial and error. Eventually everyone can beat the game, it's just that some people don't have time to search 40 rooms for a key and just want to progress. There's difficult games, then there's "let's frustrate the player by putting hidden traps everywhere so they die over and over and think it's a hard game." It doesn't take skill to avoid a trap after the tenth time you died from it, and it also doesn't mean the game is hard just because they put an insta-kill trap somewhere you can't see. My point is that the game seems to punish players to make a name for itself. I'm not saying that it doesn't have any kind of story/lore, but even the game itself doesn't try to stray from fitting in this viewpoint. It simply uses cheap tricks and tactics with a brutal death system to make the game hard.

So here's my overall summary: The game sells itself pretty much as "the hardest game ever, I dare you to try it, you definitely won't beat it." People then buy it to prove them wrong. It's a good marketing strategy, but the game does absolutely nothing to make it seem more than a gamer's proving ground. It then turns into a sort of initiation: "Oh you didn't beat DSII? Dumb casual." Overall, the game hasn't proven itself as anything but a seemingly endless test of someone's patience. To me, that doesn't sound difficult, it just sounds annoying.

Loving the new set, should have saved it for the 1 year anniversary though. Also Dark Souls 2 is (For lack of a better term) dumbed down compared to 1. Dark Souls 2 is an ass kicking on the playground, but DS 1 is like the football team taking terns beating you after you were caught peeping on the cheerleaders.

Yes I know how strange of an analogy that was.

Enjoyable Patch and was interesting to hear Ryan review Dark Souls 2.

However, personally, Ashley continues to be unimpressive. Especially when she asks questions like, "What 'cult of difficulty' games came out between Super Meat Boy and Demon Souls?" You mean like the Ninja Gaiden series, Mega Man 10, Banished, Risk of Rain, The Impossible Game, I Wanna Be The Guy, AVGN Adventures, FTL, Flappy Bird, The Binding of Isaac, and many more?

There's this show called Rage Quit and where the host, Michael, tries to cover most of these very difficult games, so maybe she should try watching that.

As for Ryan and Dark Souls, there is a deep story there but it's hidden in the dialogue, actions of NPC's, and item description. It doesn't hold your hand with the story, if you want it you have to find it bit by bit. As for being hollow they didn't explain it as well this time around but by going Hollow you start decaying in mind and body, until you are basically a mindless zombie with no memories, The only way to prevent that is to gather souls.

    • Gildarts FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold That Guy

@Emperor_Z I agree completely about having to make concessions when dealing with ports. However, if Dark Souls 2 was showing controller tips when Ryan is playing with a mouse and keyboard then the devs didn't do enough to finish porting the game over. I prefer a controller over a keyboard in just about every scenario, but for the sake of professionalism the devs should make the keyboard control scheme usable and then leave a note recommending the use of a controller as how it was meant to be played.

    • Emperor_Z

      @Gildarts
Fact of the matter is that action games don't play ideally with a mouse and keyboard. There's no way to change that without making substantial changes and concessions to the gameplay. PC players should be prepared to make certain accommodations when dealing with these kinds of genres. And honestly, it's gotten easier and easier to get PC controllers these days. Personally, I just use a PS3 controller.

    • Gildarts FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold That Guy

TwistedxPr0 People down voted you because you're wrong. Sure, the game isn't going to hold your hand, but that doesn't excuse them from not taking some time to make sure the control scheme is designed properly.

    • TwistedxPr0

Idk why someone down voted this but I will get down voted for this: Ryan is complaining about the port of a console game to pc. The game was meant to be played with a controller and the controller scheme doesn't hinder you at all if you take your time to understand it. I hate it when people hate on Dark souls 2 because something they didn't bother to sit there and learn. This game tells you it won't hold your hand so don't expect it to. You don't get an in depth tutorial on how to do certain moves so go find a weak enemy and practice.
