Here's my opinion on pre-release games as a customer. Imagine going to a restaurant and ordering a steak well-done. It comes back medium-rare. I take a couple of bites to figure it out, and now I have to send it back to be finished cooking or choke it down. Either way, it'll be a looooooong time before I go back again if ever. And I certainly won't recommend it to anyone else. That's for a full, complete, "polished" disk off the shelf (which all too often comes with a heaping pile of glitches and game crashing bugs). Preordering is like calling in for a reservation on a busy night to make sure I get a seat.

Buying and playing something before it's "released" is like chewing directly on the cow. No sane person, however excited, would ever do this or encourage such behavior.

There's one thing with paying to unlock the best character, why not just put a cheat code in the game?

I agree with Burnie, early access games have been abused by some to milk cash, but FTL was early access and was a completed game and THEN added more content. I hope the model of "early access" becomes more like FTL in the way that they release a full game and then add more so it leaves good impressions.

True enough, but the problem is Steam doesn't seem to have any sort of bar set for early access. I understand that it would be hard to make a bar though, since it would be different for each type of game you're making, but still... I've had luck with some "early access" stuff (Terarria, FTL, and technically Minecraft), but have felt burnt out by games like Starbound for the same reasons Burnie stated: Yes, it is a half-finished game that you take a chance on, but if your first impression is bad, it won't often leave people wanting to go back later on.

Since Starbound, I've taken advantage of my eyes, and actually read the dang forums for these games before getting them, and thankfully have avoided games like Rust (where server admin abuse sounds pretty rampant along with some major glitches and having to re-write the entire codebase), DayZ (where, as stated previously on The Patch, is barely considered "playable"), zombie MMOs that have been rated so badly Steam eventually pulled them (The War Z, or whatever other name it was released under).

Even worse are developers that get going on Kickstarter that don't friggin' have anything to show, promise the world, and the backers and general public are left with a half-finished piece of crap (looking at you, Star Command).

I love that Steam is an outlet for indy developers and has cool stuff like Early Access, but it has been abused by developers making half a game and walking away, games that are so slow to update/release that you wonder where your money went, and outright ripoffs, so much that I'm to the point where I am cynical as hell about the entire process.

I too bought Papers, Please in the Summer Sale because of Gus's glowing recommendation. I understand why the premise is so exciting, and as it progressed it was a lightbulb of "Oh! This is a really good balance of tension and morality to influence your actions." Having said that, by day 15 I was googling "How long is Papers, Please?" because the gameplay is so tedious. By day 23 I googled "How many days in Papers, Please" to know that an end was in site. I recognize that that's part of the game - you feel the tedium the character feels, but man . . . don't think I'll ever be going back to it.

Haha yeah I got Papers Please because of Gus and I love it now. Only downside is I suck at it, though the fact my mouse is dieing is not helping things smiley0.gif

The Forza 5 microtransactions were insane at launch. The top car in the game cost $60+! One car was more expensive than the game. Just insane.

Dude, Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball was one of my favorite games on the N64.
"Call, call, call me Junior...It's Game Time!" Haha, Also I don't know about you guys, but I really want to play the Destiny Beta, but I have to wait an extra 2 weeks because I got a different black box than Joe Everygamer down the street. That's more annoying than PC game pre-alpha-super buy in any day of the week to me.

Don't feel bad Burnie, I have played FTL for about the same amount of time and never even got passed the first phase of the boss.

Don't get me wrong, I love that it's so hard but I just wish after the many hours I've put into it that I could beat it just once. I'm a big fan of the "rouge-like" genre.

Honestly though, i'm glad it's like that. Hard games seem to be dying off to the point where at least i personally seek them.

You have to admit, it sure makes you feel like a child again to be so brutally denied victory.
