We're actually doing a paper about police militarization in my college English class and from my research, SWAT teams are being used for routine raids nowadays that regular cops can do such as no-knock drug warrants. SWAT teams were initially for extreme necessity situations (high-powered shootouts and the like), but now it's not terribly hard to have a team busting down your door. They may have just told them that the building had drugs or some shit. That's really unfortunate that it's a thing.

Maybe it's only been my social circles but I've always known women and girls who play video games. Not just a token "gamer grrl" or the facebook gamer who only plays the latest Bejeweled clone, but human beings who play and enjoy games just as much as men. I was in a gaming club in college where at least a third of the members were women every year. I don't get why people still think games are primarily a guy thing because the girls are definitely there if you're actually looking.

i hate to disagree with meg, because shes awesome, but i feel that gaming and girls aren't that much of a generational thing. I'm a little younger than meg, assuming shes gavins age, by a few years and i didn't know any girls in college that played games. they thought that was for nerds. no one played mario kart or whatever. i dunno, if more girls are playing, then thats cool. however, i feel that it will always be mostly dudes that play games. when i talk to the ladies i for one never bring up that i play games

Apparently the swatting kids had fans on youtube who give suggestions on who they want to see swatted next, and roosterteeth was a well requested one. I don't know if those guys were already arrested, though.

Does Meg seem like a tumblr girl to anyone? You obviously have to get the guy on the ground, you can't just break down the door and be like "Hey, could you please get on the ground sir?" He could have been a psychopath in their eyes. You have to be careful, the police aren't the bad guys, they're just doing their job.

local news was saying a kid that called in a swatting (different one) got 25 years to life in prison, which is a bit much in my opinion seeing as how the kid is about 15, but hopefully that'll make people realise that it isnt a joke.

If you MUST talk about Doctor Who next week, please, for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE make sure you have a cast that actually knows what they're talking about. In other words, look at the Doctor Who spoilercast you guys did last November and make sure none of these people are even in the building that night.

You know...people talking crap or trolling on the internet because they think they're a badass when they're anonymous...that's bad enough, but this swatting crap? Absolute lowest form of scumbags. How worthless and sad does your life have to be? The great irony would be if someone who has falsely called in swat before gets robbed or is the victim of a home invasion. Sorry, I wouldn't feel bad for them. Maybe then they'll understand what cops are for and what can happen if they're tied up with pointless garbage like this smiley3.gif

Sometimes the game actually changes depending on how long you take to make a decision, sometimes the game will even remove the decisions based on the fact that you waited too long, which adds to the tension of the story.
Also, F.E.A.R had a lot of those "It's clear what is going to happened and what you need to do, you just don't want to do it" moments.
And TWD Season 2 was great, but man Wolf Among Us was miles better. Wolf did all those little details perfectly, how you affect the story in each dialog, time, fight, movement.

I wish the poll had separated the male and female gamers by what platform they played, what genre of games they were playing, and how often they play as that is much more interesting to me than the rest of the stats they had.

agreed. there was a stat i read back in 07 that said women make up like 15% or some low ball number like that of all gamers. But then it went to 50% play facebook games, and 36% played some form of blizzard game, etc. It was really interesting to see because it kinda helped affirm the idea that guys at that time made up a large portion of shooters/ console games. But that was back in 07. I would like to see how much of a shift the gaming market has seen in that 7 years. To me when i jump in on Halo 4 its a guys game 99% of the time. Im coming to this conclusion based on who talks on their mic. There are more than likely female gamers who just dont want to talk to avoid being harassed and i get that. But on PC when i jump into Starcraft 2 or LoL or really any non Shooter focused PC game. I talk to women a lot more. So I kinda want to know if women make up a larger overall chunk of the PC world now or is just these specific games. Idk i like stats and stuff. its really interesting.

I really did wish RT would talk about the Zoe Quinn stuff though, they should realize it's not about someone's personal life, it's more about how corrupt gaming journalism has become, and how the media has silenced and censored any coverage about it.

@mdtwiztid You're right. I'd even seen the hashtag, but I guess I didn't relate it because I don't usually see it. I don't have a twitter so most of my interaction is from forums, and they don't have the same incentives to use the hashtag. As I look at my primary forums today though, I don't see topics about a single person, but about an industry. Maybe I needed to update myself before posting. smiley0.gif

    • YMIHere

There's no need to throw Meg under the bus like that. There is a lot of personal life stuff being thrown in that doesn't really need to be part of the discussion, and RT has stayed away from topics for much less. She didn't run out and start calling people misogynists either, so I'd try to calm the paranoid part of yourself. smiley6.gif

Any relationship between a game developer and a game journalist is a conflict of interest whether it produces skewed results or not, so who is having sex with who shouldn't even come up. If RT wanted to pursue the story, what source material would they have to go on that isn't rife with way more personal information than necessary? The blog is way too personal, InternetAristocrat while being good at presenting a concise message is too personal, and the same sentiment is repeated among anyone I've seen talking about it.

The fact that this is called the Zoe Quinn thing or the Quinnspiracy is kind of the problem. These conflicts of interest have been going on unchallenged for years in the indie game scene. It's why more and more information keeps coming out, which is causing everyone's paranoid side to act up. It's quite clear that it's way bigger than one person now, and if it keeps being focused as such it'll always be too personal.

    • Burnt2Shreds Metal Gear

I agree. This is a big topic and goes well beyond someone's personal life. Game journalism is corrupt and will do anything to defend its own.

On one hand, I'm glad that Rooster Teeth and Achievement Hunter have managed to stay away from that whole can of worms and the overzealous side of game journalism in general, but at the same time, people need to know more about it.

My paranoid guess is that Meg is covering up for Zoe, saying "It's all about her personal life, nothing else, I swear!" and everyone just took her word for it.

It's actually not that hard to call in a situation that would result in the police showing up with multiple guns and even SWAT responses. You just call in saying "I'm FrozenRage at 123 Gaming St and have my wife/gf/family/friends at gun point" Cops show up, boom Swatting in a nutshell. I was more concerned/surprised that someone called in a bomb threat on the Sony President's plane.

I'm glad to see more girls/women getting into gaming and I've even met some cool girls that I'll be playing Destiny with in a couple weeks and we are all excited to have fun in a new game as a group.

And Time Warner was having issues again today where you couldn't connect to Xbox Live for a few hours which was unfortunate.
And I hope Twitch being bought by Amazon does mean they go back on some of the new policies they implemented. ALSO that was a great segue for Burnie or whoever to mention what you guys plan to do with the new christened RoosterTeeth Twitch account....

Sorry to tell you Meg, but females are not the primary gamer demographic, 1 poll does not incorporate your bias viewpoint based on your family, good try though.

Also, I know about 10 girls who play games, guess what they are, mobile games, mainly candy crush, 1 used to play WoW, none of them play console, 2 of them play PC.

I'm sorry to say that this is the trend for most female gamers, either handheld like the DS or mobile, it's not gaming, stop calling them gamers.

It's frustrating when I've spent my entire life playing a variety of consoles and the PC and I get lumped into a candy crush player while I have over 54,000 gamerscore, 60+ days in WoW, 700+ games in FIFA, 350 hours in total war and a steam library of 84 games.

    • SchmidtN

      edwardcoate,

Hey, it's cool we disagree and can still be civil with each other. My definition of a gamer is anyone who spends their money on video (I might not even limit it to video as I enjoyed the heck out of text adventures as a kid) games. I don't see it as a gender war, or a casual/hardcore war or anything like that. I see more money going into the industry. Money into the industry means more games back out and more chance of me finding something I like playing.

While the ESA doesn't actually come out and say it in the study, the purpose of labeling gaming demographics is so game devs know who to target. The results are also displayed in a fairly ambiguous way, mainly in modified pie charts, but here's my take away from it. Folks from different gaming genres and of different genders spend money on games. 59% of Americans (oh, I forgot to mention, this is an American study, not worldwide, so they didn't include UK gamers which might add something to our discussion) call themselves gamers and smartphone gaming has increased 22%, with a 55% increase in casual gaming. Those are big increases of players, but I don't know how much money that translates to, the study doesn't break that down. Whether we call them gamers or not, the industry is going to want their money.

I would say from an operations research view that weighting all the stats in their report by the amount of money those groups spent would be more telling than anything else. I don't know, maybe game devs got a better report than what was released to the public.

As for making better games I still think the more games are out there, the more likely you are to find ones you like.

    • glitch14

Those surveys usually seem to have a very broad definition of gamer. Its like oh you picked up some kind of digital game in the last year for 2 hours that counts. Its like saying old women are the largest demographic of athletes because a survey asked them if they have done any type of physical activity in the last year.

Games are becoming more popular so it is hard to find people who have never played one at all, but it does not make you the core audience. I know a girl who loves the original zelda and plays it every time she goes home, but mention a game to her made in the last 10 years and she would not know what you are talking about. My sister loves old playstation games but does not own a console of her own.

    • edwardcoate

To Schmidtn, "Just because somebody plays different games than you doesn't make them any less of a gamer." - I completely disagree, but I am not just saying they are 'my games', the games I play primarily I would definitely fit into the actual gamer category, I do play mobile games too and I used to play my DS like crazy, but the genre and theme of the game actually does matter a whole lot.

Of course I generalised to an extent, in terms of the DS, but this is only because the majority of games on the DS aren't challenging and people play extremely casually, now if you show me a girl who actually has like, major accomplishments in actual rare hard games on the DS, probably turned based fighters (I'm not expert on the DS past like 2008, that's when I stopped using one) then I'd say well done, now find me 500 more, because no matter how many single outliers you may identify, men are still the majority.

I would definitely rank Zelda higher than like, a Facebook game or something like Candy crush or bejeweled.

The importance of the group is that things like this DO require ranking; it's not good enough to say "we all played one game so we're all gamers", does playing one game of football make me a football player? What if I just kicked a football against a wall for 2 hours, that's technically football right? What if I just watch the sport, or bought a shirt, am I a football player now?
This is why ranking is important, someone who had like T3 Naxx with R14 in WoW wouldn't like being lumped into a category with someone who plays hello kitty on a daily basis.

I'm not happy it's growing bigger, just means that the industry is going to be more likely to pander to casuals, which is a common thing nowadays, there used to just be one standard difficulty across games, now you have to select "Hardcore" or something in order to make the game the slightest bit hard (Obviously there are some exceptions) but just look at Diablo 3, an AH with pay to win where the easy difficulty and normal difficulties are just a 100% faceroll, retail WoW is also so dumbed down from 1-85 that it hurts.

    • tatooine666

Yes! at least a little bit of sanity in this circle-jer***, I love to see females in gaming but saying that they are "THE MAJORITY" is just a lie, of course they are a lot more now, years ago being a nerd was a slur, not a single girl never showed up, NEVER, (no one remembers this?), now because its popular and more social accepted (called it "cool"), now they start showing up...
With this said I think it is really positive to see that our hobby is more popular now than ever but please don´t go rampant with these ridiculous statments like "women are the MAJORITY of gamers", just calm and take a deep breath, then think again

    • SchmidtN

I don't understand your frustration. There are all kinds of gamers who enjoy all kinds of gaming. Just because somebody plays different games than you doesn't make them any less of a gamer. I own a 3DS (look at my avatar) does that mean I'm not a real gamer? I don't play WoW or FIFA either, but I have completed every Zelda game. Am I a fake gamer? It's the same with all the endless console/PC master race debates. Why do people always try to find a way to isolate themselves into a group, then say everyone else doesn't count? (not a problem limited to gaming)

Why can't we all just be happy that the video game industry is growing bigger, which means there are more people making games. You'll never like every game that's made, but if more games are being made that means there will be more games made that you do like. I'd bet dollars to donuts that some of your 84 steam games are made by indie devs that wouldn't exist if we chase away everyone who enjoys video games with a pitchfork because they don't enjoy games the same way you do.

Glad you guys talked about the Swatting situation. Yeah, it might make spread the idea around to more stupid people, but on the flip side, it's good to raise awareness about this thing. I didn't even know Swatting was a thing until I read the comments on one of the Creatures' videos.

People need to understand, there's a difference between a funny prank and this:

In a situation like this, if the Creatures had been filming a skit with their prop weapons, or if one of the officers heard the CS:GO game audio or if Jordan had reacted the wrong way, someone could have been killed.

The fact someone can do this and proudly boast about it boggles my frigging mind.

Swatting: you call in a hostage situation. The defense against it yall should probably take now is call your local Police department, let them know what you company does and you may be a target to of swatting. You establish a number for them to call to confirm if there is a threat. I learned this via NPR.

I was watching the Creatures stream live yesterday (around 19:00 here in England) when it happened... I was scared just watching, so I can't imagine how traumatizing that must have been for Danz and Kootra. People at first thought it was fake and was just a set up to hype their PAX panel, but it became quite evident very quickly that this was the real deal I love these guys and luckily only 2 of the 8 creatures were in the office when it happened and thankfully Kootra handled himself well in the situation. Hopefully it never happens again!
