Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck sakes Burnie! These games, they are not MMOs! Some aspects yes, but they are not massive in the slightest.

I've only played the beta for Destiny, but it seems very much like Super Mario 64 only you've broken the castle(the hub world) into 2 places: the Tower where you can walk around, do a little exploring, and spend what you've collected in the different levels. And then you've removed the paintings that you jump into and replaced them with space/orbit where you just select somewhere to go on the map and it loads it up. Then once you're in the level world you are kind of free to explore where ever you want, but if it's your first time going there, you'll usually be herded in one place in particular, and some places may even be unavailable to you(in Destiny due to what level you are; in Mario due to what stars you have). In which case you may have to progress more in order to unlock more areas in the same map.

Obviously I'm just talking about the level layout structure, not gameplay. One's a platformer and one's a shooter. But just how they let you explore the world is kind of the same.

Zoe Quinns relationship to Gamergate is like the relationship between the bullet that killed Franz Ferdinand and World War I. Yet people still avoid this topic like there's fair point on both sides. The issue isn't about sexism, that's an entirely different issue entirely. It isn't about the vocal minority. It's about the undeniable corruption in the industry we love, and the Gamedevs crying sexism and misogyny to any serious criticism. Worst of all they're preying on people not in the know about the topic to drum up support for them, they are preying on people who read one or two articles off the top and avoid the thousands of info graphics, videos, and subreddits.

Meanwhile all discussion of this topic is being censored in a dozen forums and a million comment sections all over. Yet RT will still keep their mouths shut about this? Bullshit.

I don't chime in on podcasts basically at all but Ryan is very misinformed when it comes to the Destiny loot system. If you play the crucible and do strikes you earn marks and reputation that you can use to get all legendary gear in two weeks with the exception of your weapons (which you can still get from these sources but it takes longer). It's absolutely false to say, "there's not a single thing you can do to guarantee legendary for even a single person in your party." If you do 5 minutes of research you can find this out. I read a reddit post specifically about people having these same "issues" with the game, treat your dropped engrams as bonuses not you main method of gearing up.

"Borderlands is an MMO that you just play by yourself"

Burnie I know I am communicating through comment which makes my comment complete shit and I'm trolling and worthless, but just stop. That makes literally 0 sense.

  • 1Threshold1

Absolutely agree with Burnie, I don't care what Bungie wants to term it, Destiny is an MMO, albeit a light/diet version in some regards. I don't know how some people were sounding like they were unfairly grading/reviewing it as if it were some kind of standalone game.

The thing about Minecraft is I don't know how it is going to expand revenue streams. On the PC side, its success and longevity is due to its moddability and community. If they try to incorporate the console method of selling texture packs/map packs, it is going to backfire horribly because mods replace those completely and more superiorly unless they make it unmoddable, which would hurt the community and drive people away. On consoles, there is already reduced future revenues due to the discounts for people buying One/PS4 version, and really there are very few people who have not already experienced the game. This isn't a subscription game like wow, with it's widespread appeal it has already been played by most people who would want to play it and so that limits future earnings.

Destiny is an MMO the same way Phantasy Star Online is. Its not an Open World MMORPG, its a mission based MMORPG.

It is unfortunate, but smart phone gaming is huge, it is extraordinarily profitable because the development costs are so low compared to a console game. Video game companies have taken notice, and it has affected how they make games (for example, the entire freemium concept which has been around for years on PC finally made it onto consoles due to its success in smart phone games).

It's honestly kind of sad that Burnie's love for Microsoft clouded his reasoning so much. I would challenge you to do some research on the sterilizing effects of Bill Gate's vaccines that he "generously" donates to third-world countries (of which, 99% is tax deductible). Mr. Gates also has a passion for eugenics.

FYI Blue Apron doesn't actually meet your dietary preferences. They have 3 recipes with meat and 3 without. By default you get the 3 with meat which you can opt out of any of them however you have no control over the replacement. They tried replacing a dish I couldn't eat with another I couldn't eat and said tough luck. Blue Apron's support said that there was no way to control the replacement and their only solution was to opt out of receiving anything that week and resume the following week.... They then proceeded to try and still bill me and ship me food after I canceled my subscription.

It's a great idea but poorly executed. Definitely don't recommend for anyone with dietary needs.

I listened to Ryan's rant on Destiny's reward system and he my sympathies. I often find decoherent engrams (blue) that give me uncommon armor (green) and it annoys me but I find some satisfaction in that I can use them for plasteel. Actually, this happens to me in MMOs so I probably shouldn't be surprised. Funny thing though, after listening to the podcast I went to play destiny to grind vanguard and crucible rep. I immediately went to the crucible and on the first match got a decoherent and it gave me my first legendary armor. I don't know if listening to Ryan's strife gave me luck or what but it was pretty cool. Keep trying for legendaries Ryan, it feels so good when you get them after trying so hard.

  • MGurr

I must be the only person who likes the Cryptarch, so far I only have one legendary and it came from a decoherent engram I was given upon reaching Cryptarch level 3.

Although now you mention it I've had a lot of blues and greens that are worse than my current gear since.

In my personal opinion I believe that video games displaying oversexualised interactive content is different than violent content. For me violent content, such as the call of duty airport shooting mission (as referenced) is more abstract to us as players because it is not a part of our lives (yes I know these things happen, but they are not the average persons activities). I can play games where I will kill others, and will often do so trying to do it in the most skilled way possible, but that is where it ends, I (and many other players) would never consider doing something like that in real life, and it is this abstract novel experience for us that enables it to be more distinctly a game and separate from reality, it is this that enables us to to what seem like horrible things and make them fun. Killing someone in a game is vastly different than to real life, which enables us to create this barrier between what is real and virtual, showing us the difference between what is fun and what is devastatingly sad. I think it's from this that we can therefore go on to believe that these games do not impact our real behaviour, because this distinction lets us acknowledge that though it might be fun in games, to do the same thing in real life would be unthinkable.

However in terms of the sexualised content, sex is a normal part of human life, and is something we will (almost) all experience at some point or another, and is also something that is at the same time somewhat tabooed. I think that it therefore becomes something that is commonplace in our lives, but at the same time unknown and mysterious, leading to specific views, fantasies and so forth. In having a simulator like this, it is blurring the lines between real and virtual because it no longer stays as something that we could never possibly do, to something that we will probably do at some point in our lives, and with this lack of common knowledge, it becomes much more impressionable. There have been studies on the results of widely accessible porn (especially younger less experienced people) and peoples sex lives and culture, and these simulators become an extension of that, of what people can/cant or should/shouldn't do. Then this is further emphasised by the fact that we have ideas about love and sex, things like consent, the term making love, and that it is an intimate act between two people, whereas this brings the emphasis away from the person itself and more on sexual gratification (which is only going to worsen our already sexist and over sexualised culture, where people almost don't become important anymore just the fact that you can get sex from them). I think that this uncomfortable feeling is worsened because it is just so close to reality (which is for the game the point) that it no longer becomes an abstract thing to make fun, but more something that replaces real life experience, so that instead of say meeting a girl and getting sexual gratification, you are replacing it with a machine and taking away from the real life experience, and therefore the more real these things become, the more uncomfortable we feel about it.

But that is all just my personal view on the matter, so feel free to disagree.

Get rep for crucible and vanguard in Destiny then buy your purples, will save you a lot of time and frustration, especially when the cryptarch is colorblind and gives you a green for your legendary engram

I would hate to be in Activision's corporate offices over the last few days. If they had just held off and reported what the sales figures were up to this point, and not try to impress everyone by the number of units they shipped to retailers, the stock price probably wouldn't have taken a 10% dive over the last few days.

I also wondered if Microsoft would convert Minecraft to C. It would be great for performance, but I agree it would hurt the mod community. I know both Java and C and Java is WAY more easy to pick up and self-teach.

PS Someone please make (and link me) a gif of Ryan doing the double finger flip.

I personally don't want to see it written in any other language. Minecraft to me demonstrates the ultimate versatility and scalability of a Java application. Also it's perfect for what it's supposed to do, which is run in the same virtual machine whether your on windows, mac, or Linux, which means it's written for the personal computer platform period and only requires a lightweight API to transform into a server.

People who moan and groan about Java, typically don't know what it is, they just know that they're annoyed that it asks to be updated frequently. Even PC enthusiasts like Ryan tend not to understand what Java really is. If you want to make a game in C++ then make a game in C++ and bask in your performance capabilities, but smack your head when you have to compile natively on individual architectures.

When Ryan gets done re-coding the 4 billion lines of Java into C++ I'm sure it wont be completely terrible.

Also if you want to finally see Minecraft written in C, travel back in time to to 2012 when Minecraft gets released for Xbox Arcade. It's written in C#. Or go back to 2011 when it's released for IOS that's all C++.

      End rant. Bye.

Ryan is great in general but people wearing hats indoors is my kryptonite. I mean come on is his head cold? Is he self concious about his hair? is he worried about indoor rain. D=

Burnie is also awesome he is just one of those people I could listen to for hours.

I think the main problem with Destiny is the endgame content requires a lot of luck and the people who are in to that content don't like randomness.

    Good patching.

Just saw the Destiny live action trailer and it was good. I just can't get past them walking on Venus. Venus is molten, they would melt. There is no solid ground there.

    • SchmidtN

The Soviets sent the Venera probes to Venus and got imagery of the ground back. There's also satellites that can penetrate the atmosphere and see the ground. It's true that it's the hottest planet, but it still has solid ground. Google image search Venera 13.

Ah good to know. I had always heard the probe melted and thought is was lava stuff. Might have been a good idea not to show them on Venus when it only is explained in the game.

There is solid ground on Venus. The only problems are that the temperature is around 860 F and a toxic atmosphere. NASA landed a probe on Venus and you can find pictures on google. The pictures are only of the descent and the ground around the probe though. And you learn in the first cut scene that the Traveler made Mars and Venus habitable.

I'm getting pretty tired of all the iphone6+ size complaints. I've been using the Samsung Note phones for years with zero problems. They fit in my front pockets no problem and even some jeans with the cell phone pocket by the knee fit the phone. Just get it and figure it out. Many Note users were able to figure this out I'm sure you iphone users are capable of finding a place for your phone. Rant over back to games.
