Hey guys! Another great episode :)

A few thoughts on your comments on the mods issues with GTA. As I stated last week, none of what I post reflects inside knowledge, and this is only my opinion, but I figure its useful to add color.

First, I'm sure you guys saw the post on rockstar's website saying that "To be clear, the modding policy in our license has not changed and is the same as for GTAIV. Recent updates to GTAV PC had an unintended effect of making unplayable certain single player modifications. This was not intentional, no one has been banned for using single player modifications, and you should not worry about being banned or being relegated to the cheater pool just for using single player PC mods."

However, speaking more to the point you guys were making, here is a practical difference between Skyrim and GTA that is important to consider.

The cost to Bethesda for Skyrim is largely in development. Once they have finished the game, the distribution cost is packaged into the price of selling the game. They don't manage an online service to play the game in co-op/competitively. They make their money on boxed copy sales and DLC sales.

Rockstar however, has both the development cost and the operation of the online service. In order to address the cost of the online service, they add their virtual currency to the mix. Like any free to play game, most of the online service is paid for by the whales. Its a few players that spend a lot that pay for the few.

Rockstar is primarily trying to protect the integrity of that online ecosystem. I can't speak to the tech behind the script hooks, but it looks like its largely the script hook designer being a 'good citizen' that keeps it from going online, and there are definitely hacked lobbies and other things floating around that Rockstar has to contend with.

Like Minecraft, Skyrim doesn't really have to deal with a large shared ecosystem of players where cheaters affect the quality of your experience, and worse, affect the design and balance of a virtual economy which funds the online service. So a mod that bends/breaks the progression rules isn't really that big of a deal. When you add a supported online service into the mix, if the script hooks have a chance to impact the online service, its a problem (keep in mind too, it could be something innocuous. As an example, a utility script might call a function call that is very costly for network bandwidth, and not really care, but dramatically impact the stability of the service as a result).

All that said, it looks like Rockstar is fine with mods, as long as they don't affect online play, and one of their attempts to fix online issues broke gameplay for people who installed mods. While it would be 'nice' to include major mods as a part of testing, that introduces a whole other realm of development issues to the stack that are probably better for another post.

Long story short, Rockstar didn't mean to break things, but there are definitely much bigger issues for them supporting mods for GTA than there are for Skyrim and Minecraft. (And its not an easy problem to limit it 'just to single player' if a lot of the code is shared between multiplayer and singleplayer... which may eventually become a problem for the script hook that you mention as well).

The screenshots form THPS 5 are just THPS 2 maps that are in the HD collection!
I love the Pro Skater games but if it's just the best maps from the previous games that'll be a major let down,
and if they're right it could push EA to make another skate game that would be amazing,
THPS will always be in my heart, but skate I just find is a lot more fun.

Maybe you guys should put a link to the Game Club episode in the Patch Notes? Easy to get straight to the episode from the website rather than tracking it down.

I'm totally with @Gavino on Friends. I am an expert in that show. I try watching Friends on Netflix and it bugs the crap out of me because of all the cut jokes. The DVD seasons have a lot more jokes and are way better. #shegotofftheplane

BOO! Gone Home is such garbage. It's a made for tv short film, not a game. I'm all for games as art, and narrative driven games, but not for games that put themselves on a pedestal, and are considered good based only on the fact that they deal with an 'edgy' subject.

As for why Square Enix would be at the PC party at E3, I think that is being spear-headed by their MMO, FFXIV:A Realm Reborn and their new Expansion hitting in June, Heavensward.

An MMO, I want to say you guys are very unaware of it seems.

Reading about Konami/PSN removing PT entirely and a number of people have noted the issue with ownership of games and the ability of networks as well as developers to make changes to games without the best interests or rights of the consumer being taken into account as they have to be with physical media versions of games.
An example I know of is a lot of content being removed/censored from a game ("Everlasting Summer") on Steam by an update that the developer listed as being required by Steam as a condition of Steam continuing to distribute the game - the week before they continued to distribute that horrendously violent game - a number of months ago. Given the removed content was part of the appeal of the game and more innocuous than a lot of the content still on Steam one has to wonder, especially since the owners of the game had no say in it and, apparently, neither did the developers.
Had this been a physical copy of a game then this censorship could not have happened... had it happened to a console game it could not have been subverted (there is a hack / download to get the content)... had Steam been the ones to hold the keys to the DRM it might never be playable again... At least two fo these three were true for PT so it was pretty much doomed, at least it sounds like Sony / Konami haven't been able / willing to disable PT even if it has been downloaded, yet.
Corollary: censorship is bad, DRM is bad, licenses that are so long that no-one reads them are bad and ultimately all this is down to people being dicks to other people - which is bad.
