I think you should keep in mind, @gus, that Smite was officially released on March 25th, 2014. The way you all seem to talk about that game I think it would be fitting to at least have it in the running for Game of the Year.

Shadow of Mordor gets my vote. I've just bought it, but I've watched a lot of gameplay (both friends and YouTubers), and it's a totally different experience for each person that plays, even with the same objectives in mind. But I guess what sells it for me is the Nemesis system. It's an innovative game mechanic that makes Shadow of Mordor really stand out for me. I know you've got issues with the character flaws of the protagonist, but I don't think that makes the game any less amazing. It's a rock-solid game that you can play your own way, and it's got a brand-new game mechanic that works. SoM for GOTY.
I played a bit of the Vanishing of Ethan Carter. It's a neat game, and the graphics are outstanding...it's probably the best-looking game I've ever played. I also like the fact that you've got to piece things together and use your brains; that being said, I wouldn't give it GOTY just because it's not really replayable, and it's kinda short in the first place. Enjoyable experience, though.
I don't see Captain Toad as a GOTY. I'm sure it's fun and all, but it doesn't sound like a groundbreaking game. I've seen a little bit of gameplay, but nothing really grabbed me. It certainly doesn't hold up to a game like Shadow of Mordor.

Here's a total side-comment: MCC's multiplayer is still broken. I haven't been able to get into a match for a week (and my wait time was 15 minutes every time before I gave up), and the last time I managed to get in a match, it was 2v2. I waited less time in the beta (when it wasn't busted--but it's a beta; it gets a little more forgiveness). How will I get the multiplayer achievements when I can't get in a game?

I would add Wolfenstein The New Order to the list. Probably the most fun I've had playing a first person shooter, or any game, in a long time.

I'm surprised that nobody played, or enjoyed (?) Watch Dogs. The single player game was quite fun, and the multi-player, although a bit problematic, was definitely unique and entertaining.

Damn, forgot to add in one more game.

Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Remix. Amazing remaster. Adds a ridiculous amount of content that wasn't available outside of Japan before, has multiple games in it and all the story from other games, adds in more difficulty and replayability, and because Kingdom Hearts is as amazing series.

It kind of annoyed me with Ryan's comment of how it'd be weird if a popular AAA game wasn't on the Game of the Year list early in the video, even if they marked off COD pretty quick. AAA literally has nothing to do with quality, only marketing and budget.
Also annoyed me with his comment of how Nintendo apparently has a bunch of remasters this year that'd fit in the Remaster Category. They only had Pokemon, which was a 10 year old game. Pretty much the only other ones were the LoZ games that were all at least 10 years old again. He was pretty clear on "I won't say much about a game I haven't played" this video, yet that apparently didn't translate to knocking Nintendo like he usually does. Not everyone has HD-er remasters of games that are a year old.

    Anyway, for my suggestions:
-Bayonetta 2. Great game, really fun and rewarding. Honestly the only complaint I can really see is it's framerate isn't locked 60 fps (but rarely dips below 45), and in some aspects it's not as difficult as the first game.
-Smash Bros. You guys mentioned it, and I know you don't really enjoy it so there's bias (and I'm bias as well since it's one of my favorite series), but it's got so much content and is probably the most balanced Smash game. I know it won't win, but it should stay in the runnings at least.
-Pokemon ORAS. Honestly shouldn't win, but it should be in the runnings of how good of a remaster it was. Biggest gripes would be that they still didn't fix the engine (game runs terrible in 3D mode and still dips below 30 fps sometimes in 2D), no Battle Frontier, and for some reason keeping the tradition of not keeping aspects they added in past games (like customizable characters in X/Y, Pokemon following you in HGSS, etc.), but it added a lot of content and was a great reimagining of the old game.

My list is pretty Nintendo-oriented, mostly because there's not much else I enjoy since mid-7th gen outside of old school Japanese-styled games and indies, but even if that wasn't the case, I wouldn't really bother to add games from the other systems since you pretty much got that covered already. And you're just gonna throw out all these suggestions for your own opinions anyway ;)

I definitely feel like Five Nights at Freddy's and Five Nights at Freddy's 2 should be added to the downloadable games. They definitely caused a massive stir in the early summer and late fall and got a lot of attention. Bayonetta 2 has also earned a lot of attention this year.

Got to put a vote in for Valiant Hearts: The Great War. It had a gorgeous design, a moving story based on documented events during World War I (with a little bit of embellishment, I grant you) and very simplistic gameplay making the story accessible to everyone. It's very rare to find a game that's fun and educational.

A couple of things they didn't mention the biggest one being Dark Souls II and all three of the crown DLC for downloadable. Shovel Knight, This War of Mine were also some good games not mentioned. Personally I put down AC: Unity technical issues aside I thought it was really great. Combat was better, Free-running was smoother I liked it more than Black Flag and Rogue.

This War of Mine is a really interesting game that I think should be mentioned. It is really tense and you have to make some very tough decisions.

Of course, it came out in the fall with a bunch of other games, so it's understandable that it was overlooked but I think it is definitely worth checking out.

I felt the Dragon Age Inventory was pretty easy to figure out you, not to insult Gus. You go to armor/weapons, and then scroll through your characters, depending on that character's particular weapon skill / armor preference, you scroll to that icon.
So for Sera, you go to scroll over to bows, pick the best bow for her, can even compare it to the bow she has currently, if no one else in your team uses a bow then you just move the rest of the bows over to valuables to SELL ALL and clearing up your inventory, same deal for armor.

    As for games:
Dragon Age, is my favorite game of the year I spent 113 hours doing quests and the campaign missions, it's a blast and there's still so much to do. Great story, great characters, and beautiful environments.

The Wolf Among Us, was a phenomenal game had some great story telling and action sequences.

Halo Master Chief was awesome to play, Though I don't play Halo for it's multiplayer, so it's bugs didn't bug me, but in terms of being a remastered game, it was the best remastered game this year because it gave you 4 games, with forge, multiplayer, and theater mode, co-op, Halo 2 got the anniversary treatment, and new weapons and vehicles were added to the Halo 2 remastered maps and forge. That's a lot of things that no other definitive edition or remastered edition has done this year.

Wolfenstein: The New Order, was probably the best FPS this year, it had an awesome story, brutal weapons to play with, and allowed you to play how you wanted to play, go stealth or kick down the door, guns blazing.

I'd like to add Elder Scrolls Online. For all the complaining that people do, it is a solid game. It can be played entirely solo or in groups. I think it is as good of a compromise between a single player RPG and an MMO as we could hope for. There were bugs but for the most part they got fixed rather quickly. The gold spammers were gone in just a month or two and I haven't seen a bot player in months. The content updates have a great release pace of one every 4-5 weeks, and update 6 is coming to the Public Test Server in a week or two. The two main stories are fantastic, the art style is a bit cartoony but still good and the music is great.

Rogue Legacy is a potentially good game to add to the downloadable list. It hasn't received its Xbox One launch yet, but came out for PS4 last year. It probably wasn't as popular as Binding of Isaac Rebirth because it wasn't a free PS+ game, but it had great gameplay and high replayability. The legacy feature in the game was fresh and innovative, you never knew which character you would have next. There was a slight RPG feel on how you upgraded your castle to improve the stats of future generations. It was also provided a pretty strong challenge. Probably not a strong GOTY contender but definitely worth a nod IMO.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes was hands down my favorite gaming experience this past year. Then again, I'm admittedly a MGS fan boy. Forza Horizon 2 definitely deserves to be mentioned. It's the best racing game I've played since, well, Forza 4.

Say what you will about the length of MGS: Ground Zeroes, but in a year filled with buggy, unfinished games. Ground Zeroes worked flawlessly! I really enjoyed the open world approach to the stealth gameplay typical of the Metal Gear games. Lastly, I was initially skeptical, but I really enjoy Kiefer Sutherland's voice acting. He's great as Big Boss! Overall, Ground Zeroes basically sold The Phantom Pain to me! Can't wait!

Forza Horizon 2 absolutely delivered on all fronts. It's such a shame that racing games always get the boot for these kinds of awards. The game is gorgeous! The Forza games have always been great looking, but Horizon 2 takes it to another level! The dynamic weather is really cool. And it actually affects the game. If it raining, your car is gonna slide all over the place. And another thing, it worked!

The Metro Redux is basically a remastered version of both Metro 2033 and Last light from the 360 but due to the age of 2033 the changes for the Redux version deserve to get it a mention.

    1. The bump in Graphics with the Last Light engine.
    2. Small additions that made life easier in the game, (wiping your gas mask and knocking enemies out with your knife)
3.Enemies both human and mutant were re-made to look like enemies in Last Light which were the same enemies but looked different)
4.The h.u.d was made to be like Last light's and the weapon selection system was re-made.
    5. Dairies were added to 2033 that gave little snippets from the book (Metro 2003) and let the player learn a bit about the lore.
6.DLC weapons in Last Light were added to 2033.
    7. Shrimps that were enemies in last light only were added to 2033.
8.Metro Redux had two games with all DLC and was only $40 (this is the Australian price)
    9. By far the best part of the work done was The voice actor who did lines for the main character in Last Light recorded all line from 2033. The voice actor who was in the original 2033 game sounded like he didn't give a shit and that fucking sucks.

So uh yeah, this is why I think Metro Should have been mentioned.

I think The Crew definitely deserves mentioning not necessarily for game play but just cause I found driving from town to town amazing the size of the map is HUGE, the mountains and sunsets are beautiful, and Seattle (in my Washingtonian opinion) feels a lot like Seattle minus the fact I can't find a good burger joint anywhere.

On the note of Smash Bros, it's a great entry into the series, far better than Brawl. Many might note it is not as fast as Melee but it improves on so many other fronts it just is so much better and Amiibos add so much more then you would think.

Mario Kart 8, to me, was really good. I was a big into Double Dash and am dying for something creative to be added to the series. But 8 has solid game play with lots of fun and I think a big improvement from Wii. Just a really solid Mario Kart game in my opinion.

Bravely Default was a RPG on 3DS that I spent a heap of time playing at the start of the year. It was very much a Final Fantasy game in all but name and what made it unique was the combat system that allowed you to attack multiple time in a turn or bide your time for one big attack. It was definitely my favourite handheld/mobile game of this year though on the RPG side of things it has tough competition in the form of Dragon Age: Inquisition.

While DAI's inventory is kind of cumbersome, it is possible to filter the menus by class specific weapon and armor ie bows and daggers for rogues, staffs for mages and two handed, one handed and shield for warriors. For armor it is class restricted by light, medium and heavy armor. Another thing that I have noticed is that the inventory is sorted by item level which is generally a good indication of best gear (which is a little skewed by rare and unique items). Finally, you are able to compare items in your inventory with whatever the selected character has equipped by pressing X twice (playing on Xbone).

Dragon Age is my favourite game from this year so I'm half hoping a brief explanation addressing the issues raised in this episode could remove some of the mystery and bump up the judges opinion of it :P

I don't care what anyone thinks but I thought that ac unity was a really fun game. Everyone puts it down for release glitches and bumps but I haven't experienced any and I've played through the entire campaign. Remember Battlefield 4, that had twice as many problems when it released, and some of them still haven't been fixed! Yet still millions of people thoroughly enjoy the game. I just feel like some people are jumping to conclusions with ac unity. They hear that it isn't working right so they stay away from it. I say if you haven't played ac unity you should definitely pick it up and try it out. I'm not saying that it should be game of the year, but it should have been good enough for Gus to put it on his list. I would love to hear a little more about what you guys think...

Smite! I definitely think that Smite should be among the contenders for best downloadable game, and even for game of the year because it added new mechanics that have never been seen in a MOBA before and became extremely successful with it.They might not have added it to the list due to the fact that the beta was released before 2014. However the full game was not officially released until March of 2014, so it definitely needs to at least be on the list.
