I think the fact that the best athletic competitors from all over the world are swimming in shit is a perfect metaphor for how bad the world's gotten since the last summer Olympics.

I'm very grateful that Ashely and Gus started playing Stellaris, because I've played EU3 in the past and never heard of that one.

Re: Ryan's comment: In Civilization V you find on longer games on larger maps it makes sense to befriend the AI - the trick is to feed them money by buying their luxuries/gifts/trade routes, not invade city states and give them all a scapegoat to hate. You can then use them to great effect as reinforcements in invasions, and if you don't discover Gunpowder early enough you corruptly manipulate World Congress to take down the stronger players with embargos and Luxury bans. It gets harder when ideologies arrive though.

But on smaller maps and shorter games, then it makes no sense at all. The best strategy is play one set of civs against another so they're not targeting you as you slowly pick them off one by one :)

About we happy few, the game throws up some information that says that the story for the current version of the game isn't in the preview version and that 2 of the three characters you get to play as aren't available.

Also, there was no choice of leaders in Civ V. If you wanted to play Germany, you were Bismarck. If you wanted to play the US, you were George Washington. There was only one leader per country.

They talked a lot about Civ being super complicated but I feel as though it's an extremely shallow strategy game. I used to think it was complicated but once you go down the rabbit hole of strategy it seems like a piece of cake. For example, Gus and Ashley talk about Stellaris like it's so complicated, but that's the simplest PDX game out there. The rest of their games like Europa Universalis 4, and Crusader Kings 2 are so much more complicated. I got bored of Civ V because it's the same thing over and over again, and Civ VI doesn't seem to change enough of the game to constitute 60$! If I were you, I'd wait for both expansions to come out.

I'd disagree, at least if you account for higher difficulty levels. Having played both CK2 (with as many expansions as I could muster) and Civ 5/Beyond Earth, I can see different aspects of thinking to each. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but saying Civ5 is repetitive is... ironic, given you're comparing it to CK2. Now, mind you, I've played ~200 hours on both, so my opinion may be slightly biased.

CK2 seems to focus more on what I call "mitigation" tactics. You are reacting to events as they come along, such as a great pox trigger or a claimant. You may have an overarching strategy (produce a single strong heir, produce a huge dynasty, conquer Spain, etc.) but you are rarely in complete pursuit of that strategy. Most of it is damage control - somewhat like a zoomed-out version of a game like FTL.

Civ5 and Beyond Earth (although I have issues with the second) are more based on strategy combined with minor tactical control. You may have moments of putting out fires (barbarian encampments/alien nests), but you are generally in pursuit of a larger goal (military victory, cultural victory, etc.) and those minor incidents take a backseat to said goal.

Personally, I think that it comes down to a sort of slider between tactics and strategy. CK2 tends to be more heavily weighted to the tactics side, but not as far as a pureblooded RTS like Starcraft, or something like Mount&Blade Warband (which I've logged ~700 hours in across all iterations). Civ5/Beyond Earth are more heavily weighted to the strategy side, but not quite as far as something like Masters of Orion or GalCiv 2/3 (~150 hours).

TL;DR: If you think Civ5 is too easy, turn up the difficulty and getcho head in the game. If you think CK2 is incredibly deep/hard, read "The Prince" and learn to be more pragmatic.

I think that Civ games usually turn out the same is what I mean. There's a few ways to win and usually everybody goes for domination. I don't know to much about CK2 but I have 680 hours in EU4 and I'm still only scratching the surface. What is amazing about it though is it's not just "Make unit, send unit to war, take city". It's got a huge amount of overarching strategy and takes patience. Civ diplomacy is absolute bullshit whereas EU4 isn't. There's more options and it tells you WHY people like or dislike you. They're not like Civ leaders where there's no reason they hate you and everyone stabs you in the back and you don't know why. By hour 120 of Civ I was bored. I feel like they need to make Civs more different rather than 2 or 3 abilities. Some of them are interesting but a lot of them are samey.

Burnie if you read this, for Fallout Shelter you could edit the save file for it to make it similar to your phone save. Alternatively you can transfer from an Android Phone to PC. Now I know you don't use Android but perhaps you could use the Cloud save from your Iphone to get it on a Android device you have? If you could then you could just plug it up to your PC and copy the file over. No editing is required, it's compatable with both systems.

You guys don't really seem to know your stuff when it comes to Square Enix's franchises. Kingdom Hearts III has not been in development for over 10 years, and it has actually only been in development since late 2012, so for four years or a bit less. Final Fantasy XV hasn't also been "in development" for over a decade. Parts of FF Versus XIII (which began production in 2006) were reused for FF XV (mainly just story stuff and such), but the two are different productions, which is stressed by the developers themselves as well. FF XV started production around 2012 as well.

    • YazzPott

This is true. though i disagree on Versus XIII and XV being different productions. When your characters, themes and story carry across it can easily be considered working on the same game. Look at the original FFXIV, crashed and burned, was redone and reworked in its entirety to be playable. Those are both the same game, despite having seperate develpment cycles (new teams altogether) and the games playing nothing like each other in any way.

Not all of the characters, story and themes carried over from Versus. Basically, or at least very close to, none of the themes the game was supposed to portray did, and the overall story was refitted to work in a main series title, along with the characters as well (some of being even being removed due to not working in the new environment). And that's just of what little they had made for Versus at the time, not of the entirety that was meant to be in the final game. And again, that's just the narrative - there's still also the rest of the game. Every concrete asset of Versus was scrapped (obviously) and every game mechanic rethought and reworked. Basically the only thing that remained was the very, very general concept of it being an action RPG. Stuff like that has also been done a lot in not only the series but in gaming in general - using parts of a scrapped previous project for a completely new project. It's nothing out of the ordinary, and as actual development projects, the two games are still very much considered two different ones.

As for FF XIV, that's a different thing, and it's all the same game. A Realm Reborn (the relaunch) was effectively an expansion that relaunched and reworked a lot of the game in addition to that. The original release is still a part of the same broader FF XIV game, and titled Legacy, just like the next one is A Realm Reborn and so on. It's also all a part of the same development, and they didn't switch teams (although that wouldn't really matter in the end). The only thing that changed was a couple of lead developers (mainly Tanaka stepped down and Yoshida took over), but for the majority, the team remained the same. A Realm Reborn and Legacy also do not play "nothing like each other in any way" (I guess you haven't played both of them?) but that's hardly on topic anymore.
