id like to comment that that is not how the development of starfox adventures went, miyamoto pushed for it to be a starfox game, miyamoto fucked that game up just like he has every starfox game, starfox 2 never got released because of him. but back to starfox adventure it started out as a game called dinosaur planet and was ruined by a man who ruins everything, so fuck nintendo and fuck shigeru miyamoto, probably also the reason behind why the pokemon games have been looking more and more like ass in the past few gens

I wouldn't introduce non-gamers to a First Person Shooter as their first game. No matter what, as Michael said, it's not easy to comprehend for someone who doesn't play video games.

But I don't agree with the idea that non-gamers won't play old games because they "look like shit". On the contrary, most non-gamers still think games are stuff like Mario, Pac-Man, or even Pong (for the older adults). Maybe if they have boys, the parents might know Call of Duty, but most likely than not, they don't really get turned off by a game's dated graphics, because they can't really appreciate it within the context of games as a whole (though they might see a modern game and comment how "Wow, games have gone so far since Pong, am I right?").

So, I'd say that you should pick a game that suits that person's interests. Many non-gamers don't have that concept of wanting to achieve a goal, so they won't care if you tell them "What is that YOU want to do?" or specific stuff like "You'll like this game as you have to save the world". Many times, simple stuff like puzzle games, text-based games, and point & clicks work best with non-gamers (hence why mobile gaming is so popular with casual gamers).

If they're more ambitious, racing games, third person Beat 'em Ups, and Hack 'n' Slash games work very well, and even strategy games (turn-based or real time) work very well.

By the intermediate-advanced stage, they can start playing complex games like FPS's -- I recommend Quake III: Arena ;) or most likely singeplayer FPS like Quake IV, Halo on console, Half-Life, Portal, and the original 3 Call of Dutys -- and RPG's, either from over-the-top, isometric, third person, or first person games. If they're socially and economically inclined, they might even enjoy MMO's.

But in summary, and in conclusion, the only real way you could ever get a non-gamer to ever enjoy video games is to be involved with them and play the games with them cooperatively. That way they can be properly guided as to how to acquire appreciation for video games (just remember to go slow and not get too ahead of them!).

The PSX is a version of the PS2 that was also a DVR and only came out in Japan, as for the original PS1, PSX is just another name that the public called it, the PS1 is officially known as just PS.

I get a little jealous of their internet speeds, downloading a 50GB+ game takes around two to three days for me, sometimes longer. It's the main reason a physical disc is still preferable for me.

The biggest challenge I ever had trying to introduce my parents or non-gamers to video games wasn't the mechanics or anything like that, it was teaching them how to actually use a controller.  How to hold it, what the buttons are, triggers, should buttons, which one's marked A or B.  It's a completely alien concept.

My first game I actually learned to play was Lego Star Wars. I think the Lego games remain some of the most accessible games. Well-known properties, simple cliche mechanics, puzzles simple and complicated enough for all ages, made for kids, enjoyable for adults. Lego.

About when Michael said The Master Chief Collection is 4 games, when you consider that it had 2 versions of every Halo CE model, texture, and song and every Halo 2 model, texture, and song, as well as ODST with everything being new but the engine and a few assets, as well as the environments of Spartan Ops, it basically evens out to 6 or 7 games' worth of stuff.

About the flash storage and game cartridge, the issue isn't size anymore, its read speed.  Speed is the reason why physical disks now a days always need installs.  Reading it off a both mechanical and solid state hard drives via SATA is faster than off a optical media.  Flash and cartridges are faster than optical but not up to par with even mechanical hard drives.

Actually, Starfox Adventures started off as its own game (Dinosaur Planet), but only later became a Starfox game. Also, if Mica wants a real Starfox game, Starfox Zero just came out this year. Some people didn't like it, but I still thought it was an enjoyable game for what it was that brought the series back to its roots.

Also, I'm glad Mica is another RT member who enjoys physical media. :)

My gateway drug was the Dragon Age series. Never got to play games as a kid because my parents said they would rot my brains out. I saw a friend playing Dragon Age: Origins and it looks so cool and I just wanted to play it. I got a taste of it over at her house and then went out shortly there after to buy an xbox 360 and the game just so I could play the rest.

"Final Fantasy hasn't done anything good in a long time"? Well, then clearly you haven't been paying attention or done your research. The re-launch of Final Fantasy XIV was, and is, one of the biggest and most successful things in the entire franchise. It's hilarious that they seem to be stuck back almost ten years in time during FF XIII's era, and didn't bother to check up on things before making claims like that. Oh well.

@Framejumper I wasn't asking for your personal opinion on it. FF XIV has had almost universal acclaim by critics and fans alike, and it's essentially the only MMO that has even the chance of rivaling WoW at this point.

@Cameyjw Well thank you for that completely childish comment and adding absolutely jack shit to the discussion.

    • rohie FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@EvilPadre I'm not stating an opinion, I'm stating the facts. I was prepared for responses I did not care for and responded to those accordingly. Don't really see the point with your reply.

@Framejumper Anyone who dares to question anything said here will get a lot of "lame" as a knee jerk reaction from people getting their panties in a bunch (these comments here being a good example of that). You being in circles where you'd rarely hear about a game or games like that doesn't mean anything in any way, the successes of game's aren't measured with whether some dude on the internet hears about it or not. You can also have your opinion excuse sure, but that doesn't change the fact that if you're saying that FF XIV A Realm Reborn wasn't overall a great success, then you are incredibly out of touch with things or delusional. Or both, perhaps.

    • Framejumper FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

it wasn't a great success though

    • rohie FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Framejumper Again, it was. The remake (and subsequent relaunch) brought the game to a completely different place and state, brought Square's stock up to a level which it hadn't been in years and made the company profitable again. The game (A Realm Reborn is what I'm talking about, obviously) enjoyed almost universal critical acclaim, and a universally positive reception from players as well, and that has continued on after then as well. It also completely turned around people's view of how subscription based MMOs that aren't WoW can be successes in this day and age, and essentially is the only game that could rival WoW, with having the second highest population (for a subscription based MMO). So like I said in my previous reply, if you're saying the game wasn't (or isn't) a great success, then you are either out of touch with things and basically know nothing about the game and the events surrounding it, or then you are just plain delusional.
