Some of my favorite game soundtracks would definitely be the Bioshock and Fallout ones. I never would have gotten into the music from those eras without them.

I also love Star Wars: KOTOR 1's soundtrack.

I've never been a big soundtrack guy but one game I loved the soundtrack for was Halo 3. The Menu's somber sounding holy choir, the heavy strings for the fast paced scenes always felt beefy.

As for DLC I just tweeted about a week ago about console exclusive DLCs. Destiny (even though I've basically been Destiny-sober for 6 months) is a huge example of my anger. I hate that Sony consoles got that exclusive armor because I like making my character look cool and to not only give the initial 1 year exclusivity timer but to then re-up for potentially another year absolutely repulsive. The armor doesn't even do anything at this point because it's garbage armor the new players can look forward to having until any legendary piece come along but the principle remains. I am currently a little irked with Tt Games over their mishandling of LEGO Avengers DLC. In this case, Sony players got Antman story DLC. I loved MCU's Antman and would love to play a DLC version but they have yet to release it. Both games were released on PS3/4 and Xbox 360/One and yet Sony gets more catnip. If Xbox players got the same treatment, I would be upset for the PS players. It's purely unfair. Even Soul Calibur 4 (? the Star Wars one) had an annoying trait at first with giving one console Vader and the other Yoda. It balanced out in terms of playable characters but they were vastly different and arguably, Vader is cooler. They eventually did release the other on each console. It's ridiculous to play favorites like this.

IF YOU RELEASE A GAME ON ALL PLATFORMS, MAKE THE DLC AVAILABLE FOR ALL PLATFORMS. And don't be shitty with the timed exclusivity, just release it for everyone all at once.

Playing "Adagio for Strings" under this fundamentally changes the tone of the conversation.

I was loading up Justice Monster Five, the new FFXV mobile app, and you guys started talking of soundtracks and one and I thought 'huh, nice music for an app' before I realised it was you guys and not the app. Silly me :P

Adagio for Strings happens to be one of my favorite electronic covers, I absolutely love that version. Other funny story for me is how I started to play Halo. I was the little 9 year old kid at my brothers friends house while they were all playing waiting for my "turn", which never came of course. Finally they all leave to go eat lunch and so now its my time to play alone, and they left it on the home screen, and to this day I still get chills when I sit down and hear the halo theme. I literally sat their enamored by that song for 15 minuted until they came back and kicked me out. It was one song that got me into video game soundtracks and I have been collected and listening to them ever since.

Halo, Assassin's Creed, and Mass effect have some of the best scores.

For Halo fans check out: Halo me.nu

As for DLC, I would say my favorite DLC is story DLC like mass effect and I like that it can expand the lore. One thing I hate though is that the DLC for certain games NEVER go on sale. even after a GOTY release etc, they just refuse to put the DLC on sale and that always seemed odd to me. Case and point Mass Effect 2 DLC for PC.

    ----

I hope next week you guys talk a bit more about Beta's for games and how they effect final sales of the game. Do you think its a net increase from people trying and liking, or decrease from people getting their fill of the title while in Beta. (for example titanfall 2 currently)

    Thanks for this post show!

...I was literally working on Adagio For Strings tonal analysis for one of my college classes while watching this. Also the choral version, of which is in use on that soundtrack, and the version Gus played, is more often referred to as Agnus Dei.

best game soundtrack for me is from turrican 2 its great if you like 16 bit music.

dlc the lego games get it wrong its pointless just cause 3 is good its not long but its a good addition without being forced. Im fed up of dlc in forza car packs theres one car often in a pack i want and ive probably stopped playing by the time theyve finished the storm island dlc in fh2 was good though

Best soundtrack is Ace Combat Zero. Dog fighting to salsa music just feels right.

I never played more than 15-20 minutes of the Far Cry 4 Valley of the Yeti DLC... solely because they wiped the character progression and gave you a new tree. The last thing I want to do in DLC is feel like I'm starting over. It makes sense if it's a different character, but using one the player has spent hours with and leveling up, only to reset them, just makes me more frustrated than engaged.

borderlands 2 had some really good dlc. except for one obvious shitty outlier (hammerlocks hunt), they were pretty good. they all added weapons and huge new areas to explore and kill things in.

God of War has to easily be the most epic sound track out there lol.

Halo Reach has the best soundtrack of any game I've played. Also is the best Halo game.

As for the DLC conversation, I will say that Just Cause 3 changed so many game mechanics within DLC, like mounted weapons overheating being the big one.

The soundtrack to the game Journey is amazing. So very relaxing. Same with Superbrothers: Sword & Sorcery and FTL.

One of my favorite games when I was a kid. Now there's a series I would love to see rebooted.

There are a lot of soundtracks that bring back memories whenever I hear them but I still get a certain tightness in my chest whenever I hear the Metal Gear Solid 3 main theme, especially when the strings begin.

I am with Adam on DLC. I like DLC that truly expands the world. The first examples that came to mind were Dark Souls/Bloodborne, Witcher 3, and Dragon Age Origins Awakening. The Dark Souls DLCs expand the world and the story greatly. Artorias of the Abyss reframed so much of the story and added a number of new weapons and enemies (including a dragon who still refuses to give me its tail). However, some games just seem to have DLC for the sake of it. Dragon Age Inquisition’s DLC just seemed tacked on. I was so bored with that DLC that a few times I lowered the difficulty, held R1, pushed forward on the stick, and read my kindle until everything died and I could move on. I also hate it when developers include weapons and armor in DLC that significantly change in the game. I am specifically thinking of the Mass Effect games. Some of those weapons were apparently very overpowered.

I agree that Witcher 3 did it well. Especially the Blood and Wine expansion because it took place after the events of the story. The original game felt 100% complete and the dlc was just more fun that took place in the end game.

a random game-music memory i have is that Tony Hawk Project 8 came out the same time Young Jeezy TM102 came out so every memory i have of either is linked to the other forever for me. outside of that i loved THPS 1&2 like everyone, THUG and Sonic 2

In regards to game soundtracks, around 2004 I heard this rock song with a sort of Irish folk vibe on the radio and for years I tried to find it. I heard it in a ton of Youtube videos for years. Then a friend made me listen to the Halo Reach soundtrack and I made my way back to the Halo 2 soundtrack.

It was the MJOLNIR mix. Got me into Steve Vai. Got me into Halo. Got me into RvB. Got me into machinima and subsequently filmmaking and animation. I owe my entire life to that one song.
