I feel like if I wasn't a PC gamer I would totally buy physical games mostly. It mostly comes down to what kind of swag comes with the physical game and the game itself. Most of all the games I get from Blizzard ive bought a physical version of except for overwatch and Heroes. And My favorite opening scene has to be the Cod 4 execution followed by Crew Expendable. I just loved that opening. But mass affect 2 and mass affect 3 opening are extremely close behind.

As soon as Mica mentioned 3DS game, I knew Ashley was going to say Fantasy Life. Such a great opening

Dark Cloud 2 opened up with a taste of combat, a bit of town exploration and then an amazing cinematic with beautiful music. Hooked me right in.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution had a great opening, and Telltale's The Walking dead had one of the best endings of all time

The Last of Us is the best opening I can remember with Metal Gear Solid 5 a close second. Both intense.

One of the best open scenes to any game I ever played is Commander & Conquer Red Alert 2 - the acting is basic, but my god does that open scene and music make me go FUCK YEAH!!! I am gonna play the shit out of this

Man, I feel like the only person who fucking loved Mass Effect 1 and played through the whole game and then couldn't get into Mass Effect 2 AT ALL. The ending to Mass Effect 1 made me feel like I was a hero in a movie.

I loved ME1 so much more than ME2. ME2 felt like they moved away from the RPG style and tried to go more action, less adventure.

Everyone always shits on Mass Effect 1 but it is one of my all time favorite games. The last hour or two of that game is especially amazing. I really enjoy Mass Effect 2 and 3, but the first one is my personal favorite.

Agreed. The only thing that really killed it as best game ever for me is the inventory management. That was absolutely horrible. But that seems to be common among the great RPGs. I keep going back to KOTOR & Skyrim as examples.

Bioware has some incredible openings in general. And I feel a new closeness to Mica knowing she likes Inquisition and has played it more times then I have.

A game with a good ending is Infamous 2's Good Ending. That ending was so perfect, with Zeke narrating and talking about his friend. It's just so good.

I enjoy listening to the Greatest Video Game Music by the London Philharmonic when I read "current events" books. That conjures up a couple great endings, Mass Effect 2's and Halo 3's, as well as BF1942's opening which I can project heroically onto the world as I sit on my ass by my lonesome.

The first song in the credits after the ending of Bioshock Infinite absolutely broke me. The barbershop quartet covering 'God Only Knows' amplified the melancholy of the ending and I was not ok...

I found the start of Bravely Second pretty amusing... Bravely Default was a game that I ended up taking over 150 hours to finish and the start of Bravely Second summarised all of it in a 2-3 minute cutscene before starting the game.

Also, now I think of it, Bravely Second also made good use of its opening and used it in an interesting way.

The Mass Effect trilogy was amazing, epic both in story and universe. Mass Effects still fights for top spot with Halo for me.

Gears of War 2 had an epic (hehe) opening. After the first level, with the speech being broadcast and the shots showing how massive the expedition is. Moving stuff.

Bioshock Infinite had an amazing intro. The way it started mirroring the first game (with the addition of the Luteces having their bizarre conversation) then suddenly you're shot in the sky on a rocket chair. Kind of wish I could have played that game completely blind and been more surprised by it. The first shot of seeing Columbia is still breathtaking though.

Still one of my favorite openings that I can remember is the Final Fantasy VIII opening. Just starting out on the beach with Liberi Fatali playing. It is such a great orchestrated piece because of how much it starts to ramp up the tempo and then the percussion hits. All of piece is a beautiful backdrop to random splits of the games CGI cutscenes that happen in the game. Then there is the gunblade fight between Squall and Seifer when Liberi Fatali really picks up.

Really, a lot of the PS1/PS2 era of Final Fantasy has some great openings but FFVIII is still my favorite.

I liked the stories in both Bioshock and Quantum Break. I also like the story in the Halo series not to mention those games have a great soundtrack and sound design.

Thanks for choosing my question as the topic guys! I have very similar choices, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Limbo etc. I really like the Shadow of Mordor intro too. I thought they handled mixing the tutorial and story introduction really well!!

How was Mass Effect 1 and 3 mentioned, but not Mass Effect 2. One of my favorite opening ever. I would probable say that Modern Warfare was also a strong opening.

ME2 absolutely. Specifically the intro, not the post title card tutorial. That's... less thrilling.

If people haven't played To the Moon, it has one of my favorite endings. It is more of an experience than a game. Would highly recommend it though

At a quick glance, one game in my Steam library that surprised me with how it started off would definitely be Recettear : An Item Shop's Tale. I got it on a whim, and have sunk hours into the game trying to make sure a little girl didn't get her home repossessed by a bank. That and the graphics and music kept me going.

Speaking of music though, my go to for great introductions to a game has to be Final Fantasy 4, or Final Fantasy 2 if you remember it from the Super Nintendo. The Red Wings is probably my favorite song of any video game I've played, because no matter how often I hear it, it gets me hyped for something big. And that first scene of the game really gives you a feel for the main character, Cecil, and the kind of person he is.

I'm sort of with Ashley but sort of not. Mass Effect 1 is easily my favorite of the series even though I love all of it. But spending 60% of the game in the Mako does make it almost unbearable. Totally agree on FF10 too. It's my favorite game of all time. But I can't bear to play 10-2. But despite the disappointment the rest of the trilogy was, Final Fantasy 13 stunned me and I have to say is what got me into the series. Nothing in the trilogy lived up to that, but it showed me the potential of the series as a whole.

And I really wouldn't count the first 8 hours of Inquisition as the intro, Mica.

Anyway as a filmmaker, this discussion was great advice on how to start a story. Begin with the promise of what's to come and slowly build back up to that. Sort of like how RWBY season 4 is looking to be like the trailers while 1-3 were building back up to that. Thanks guys.

If you go opening scenes that aren't part of the game, like you just let the game play on it's own, I would say Chrono Trigger for SNES. The sound of that clock and the building up of the theme. Just amazing.

I totally agree with Ashley about ME 3, and thinking back about it, it is very similar to Church at the end of season 13. The hero never gets to see if his sacrifice actually worked.

I agree that Dragon Age Inquisition has a really solid opening. I do tend to like Dragon Age Origins opening, namely Ostagar, better. I think it did a great job of setting up the world for the game and that this isn't going to be stopped so easy.

In my opinion the oppening to Battlefield hardline is prety damn good with jumping in to the action and establishing the police drama style of the game.
