I think the first game I felt immersed in was probably the original Pokemon games, just because of how much of a cultural phenomenon it was. It released when I was in 4th or 5th grade and there wasn't a single person at my school that wasn't playing Pokemon or watching the cartoon or collecting the cards. Everyone was sucked into that world and recess became the time to trade, battle, or share rumors.

For me it was Bioshock. Especially the ending. Not riches or glory but saving the little sisters and creating a family with them for the rest of your life. I have never felt such completeness in anything before or since. To bad they could not capture that feeling in II and III.

Probably the most immersed I've ever gotten into a game is Romance of the Three Kingdoms 9 and 10. It was more of the just one more turn thing from Civilization then the story, but god I've played that game until 3 or 4 in the morning by accident so many times.

To each their own, I guess, but playing games solely for gamerscore seems like such a hollow experience to me when you can't even let yourself stop to enjoy the games you play because it's all about those achievements.

I remember trying to play the original X-Com on PS1 without a memory card. We had rented the console for like a week, but didn't want to buy an accessory for a product we didn't own. So I would just leave the game on when I went to bed/school, and then try to beat my brothers home to play it. But even still, game crash/power outage/losing the game - I still kept having to restart.

Eventually we got a Playstation of our own, and memory cards to use on it. But fucking X-Com just seemed to hate my memory card. It would always overwrite other stuff, or the games wouldn't load, or sometimes they just wouldn't save. Play for a couple hours, only to have the thing freeze on you when you're in the save screen. I probably started that game 20 times, and never finished.

Then I bought it on PC for like $10, because it was an old PC game that console hardware was finally catching up to. There were still plenty of issues with the game, but at least they were the problems they were supposed to be!

My first full immersion experience was a racing game, too. Forza Motorsport 2 gave me a taste of that, and I got super immersed with the Codemasters F1 games (2010 to 2013. 2014 and 15 were shite. 2016 is bringing it back)

I love Final Fantasy with all my heart. I even appreciate 13 for a few aspects (Namely music and art style). But the entire trilogy is just jumping shark after shark after shark, stopping to shoot holes in the plot, then jumping another shark, going back and grinding over the same shark a few dozen times, then jumping the last 5 sharks or so.

I remember that guy falling out of the sky, looting the superjump scroll, and then at the apex of said superjump realizing he died from lethal fall damage. Also, levelling up by bunny hoping literally everywhere. Good times.
