Totally agree with Ashley when it comes to reading, if a book never starts to form a mental movie while I'm reading I'm out.

oculus only said theyde have exclusive to the oculus STORE. they were very particular at making sure it was the STORE part that was exclusive, not the oculus headset itself. with that being said, i think its kind of shitty for them to start adding in drm to keep vive players from playing vr games. i understand the practice seeing how big of an advantage the vive has on them right now. the vive has better specs and more hardware availability due to valve and htc's experience with putting out physical products. oculus is protecting their place in the market by doing this but at the same time, it sucks. i cant hate them for it because having two products in the market place is better for consumers, both for price as well as quality assurance, but i feel bad for vive users who bought oculus store exclusive titles who now find themselves unable to play them. i think oculus needs to unlock those games theyve made exclusive so far, but clarify for future exclusives that will no longer be the case.

Well I'm sold on Stellaris. I'm not very familiar with though, do you just download it from Valve or something. Sorry if that was a dumb question, I've never been very into PC gaming.

I played the Overwatch beta. Couldn't see myself playing it for too long. I think the issue is that it is not meaningfully distinct and engaging compared to Halo 5, to me. I'm a big Halo nut, and I play it regularly enough. Overwatch hits the same basic notes for me, so playing Halo 5 satisfies my interest in that kind of experience.

Titanfall was much the same. Evolve is the one that lasted the longest with me, and I think that's because it had such a unique game loop that Halo didn't have a variant to replicate it. Still, I could see buying Overwatch if it goes on sale, or if its price doesn't change but enough features are added that I suspect I'll play it for 20 hours (my rule is $2/hour of fun is a fully satisfactory purchase, while $1/hour of fun is ludicrously good).

Overwatch characters that has a connection

    Hanzo - Genji

Soldier 76 - Reaper (although vague)

    Junkrat - Roadhog

    Zenyatta - Genji

    Tracer - Winston

    Widowmaker - Tracer (nemesis)

    All ex-Overwatch members

    All ex-blackwatch members

And that´s just what I know and I know that I don´t know all the backstory.

Then consider me judged. I have not played it because I have others that I would like to play first. I haven't seen anything from Overwatch except from you guys and the Battlenet client.

It looks like an awesome game and would love to play it, but like I say I have others I would like to play,

Thanks for not judging me Ryan. :)

I'm with you Ashley, I don't want to deal with people to when I'm playing games for now.

Their early discussion about Keyboard & Mouse V Controller reminds me of this video I saw once, they set up a modified FPS between the two, and had "the best" players for their respective system play each other, Mouse & Keyboard teams won every time.

Problem is you then lose accuracy.

It's sort of the opposite of the driving problem. With a controller your input is only "start turning in this direction". It doesn't have the finesse of a mouse, which lets you move to an exact position right off the bat.

For you it might be, but over all keyboard and mouse is definitely far superior.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't mention it, but Shadowrun briefly had cross platform support...and PC was dominating by such a margin they had to split it off from the consoles.

Stellaris is marketed as one of Paradoxes "Grand Strategy" games, but it's not nearly as advanced as the others. It's meant to be an introduction for their other games, so it's simpler.

What they mean by "Grand Strategy", is that it's about as much more complicated than say Civilization 5 as Civ 5 is to Risk. Stellaris though falls about half way between Civ 5 ( or a traditional space 4x RTS ) and PDXs other grand strategy games. It's a lot simpler, but still a fair bit to learn.

WARNING: For anyone not familiar with Paradoxes games; A major downside to the sheer complexity, is that they have more bugs and issues at launch/after each expansion. PDX does a really good job at constantly patching and working to fix things, and typically supports their games for about 5 YEARS, so issues are constantly being fixed. Their patch notes for 1.1, a mere 2 weeks after release, look like most MMOs major like once every 3 months patch notes. ( Currently 1.1 is in Beta, but their beta patches usually just go live. I highly recommend using 1.1 beta if you play now. ) So, if you don't like bugs, wait a while, plus wait for awhile after any expansions before updating.

Species: Ashley probably hadn't noticed it yet since she played so little, but the species doesn't matter at all. What she was describing are the handful of pre-made empires. When you make your own, you'll notice that the species portrait is 100% cosmetic.

Battles: You design your own ships, using different technology ( the research isn't a set tree...so 2 people at the same level of tech, can have extremely different ship loadouts ), and the game just tries to guess a strength. Many of the items have hard counters, which can't be figured into a simple power number. So, yes...you could have a fleet with a FAR smaller power absolutely destroy a more powerful fleet.

For example: Torpedoes ignore shields and do massive damage. However, they are easily picked off by Point Defense. So, if a fleet has 100% torpedoes, it will get decimated by a fleet with a solid amount of PD and say lasers. ( Note: After a cooldown time, dependent on a lot of factors, you can have your fleet retreat, so it's not a total loss. )

There are popups and simple quests that act as the tutorial, but really you need to learn early on in PDX games that it's all about the tooltips. ( They aren't perfect, but most everything has them, and a lot of it is very important information. ) Thanks to Stellaris being so much simpler, you can learn most all of it in 1 game. ( Around 20-50 hours. )

The Mass Effect movie was put into production after the first game which was 9 years ago. Everyone keeps saying it's still in production but there haven't been any updates since 2013 I believe, and even then it sounded like it was still in early pre-production.

I also don't really form mental images (I kind of do, but its like the impression of a shadowy image more than an actual image, and is usually a sight I've seen rather than something original).

BTW, this doesn't stop me from writing fiction!

Edit: I still haven't given up on trying to picture what's happening in books, though.

Overwatch on console really isn't "Old Man" mode. It's "I don't have the money right now to pour into a gaming PC that can handle a monster game like Overwatch so I have no other choice but to play and enjoy it on console" mode.

I had the same problem as Ashley with The Quantum Thief. I finished the book but man, the stuff the writer was trying to describe at the beginning of the book was so out there that it was kind of a pain to get through. I think it got better later on though. It's an OK book.

I guess nobody on The Patch have played a grand strategy or PDX game. Stellaris is essentially just a Paradox grand strategy game like Hearts of Iron, Victoria or Europa Universalis....but in SPACE! It just kind of pissed me off when they scoffed at "Grand strategy". They literally play games for a living, come on guys.

    • zechio FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Grand Strategy though is really just a Paradox game, so it's really easy for even major gamers to not know about it.

Stellaris is also definitely NOT EU4/Vic2 in space. It easily borrows just as much from Civilization as it does EU4, putting it in a middle ground. ( PDX are hoping for it to act as an introduction into their other games, which are pretty rough for new comers. Heck, at nearly 500 hours, I probably don't know half of EU4...but at 50 I know about 75% of Stellaris. )

I just hit 500 hours in EU4 as well and I feel like a noob still. I still don't get combat, a lot of trade and I suck at small nations, and I try to get my friends to play but they think it's too hard. I just hope Stellaris has the same depth. CIV V was done for me after 130 hours, whereas I feel like there's so much more to EU4, and I still haven't even gotten into CK2, not to mention HOI4 comes out in two weeks.
