    • Developer Thanks Pirates for Their Attention

      Ashley The Know

Usually, developers are less than happy to see freeloading pirates downloading their game. They see it as theft. After all, those pirates are enjoying the fruits of their labors without dropping a dime in support of those labors.

However, one indie developer is taking another approach.

Since the PS Vita was hacked to run a range of unofficial software, pirates have been having a heyday. One of the games that's been seeing a lot of activity is a music title called Superbeat Xonic.

When the developers discovered the game being shared, PM Studios sent pirates an unusually friendly message:

      "Hello everybody!
We feel honoured that you enjoy our game SUPERBEAT XONiC so much, we would like to invite you to take this opportunity to purchase it on sale at the Playstation Store. You can enjoy the original game and show support to the team for just $15.99 (60% off), no Playstation Plus required!
      Have a nice day!"

No word yet on whether they've converted any pirates into paying customers, but they're one of few developers who put a positive spin on the issue of piracy.

    • Game Developers Drop Oculus Support Over Luckey Controversy

      Ashley The Know

Earlier today we posted a report that Oculus founder Palmer Luckey has been funding a political shitposting group in favor of presidential candidate Donald Trump. In light of Luckey’s political bankrolling, several game developers, mainly indie studios, have announced they’ll be pulling support for Luckey’s VR platform, Oculus Rift.

Fez developer Polytron made their announcement via Twitter that Superhypercube, an upcoming PlayStation VR title, will no longer support Oculus rift. The statement reads, "In a political climate as fragile and horrifying as this one, we cannot tacitly endorse these actions by supporting Luckey or his platform. In light of this, we will not be pursuing Oculus support for our upcoming VR release, SUPERHYPERCUBE.”

Similarly, Scruta Games, the studio behind Computer Janitor, tweeted that, “Until PalmerLuckey steps down from his position at Oculus, we will be cancelling Oculus support for our games.”

And VR developer Newton Labs announced, “NewtonVR will not be supporting the Oculus Touch as long as he is employed there.”

However, other developers feel the controversy is overblown. Carbon Games co-founder James Green told Motherboard, "This backlash is nonsense...I absolutely support him doing whatever he wants politically if it's legal. To take any other position is against American values."

Other developers suggested alternatives, including donations for opposing presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, and SoundStage developer Logan Olson announced plans to donate the proceeds from his game to Clinton's campaign for 24 hours.

Larger studios, such as Insomniac Games, have been more measured in their response. Insomniac stated, "Insomniac Games condemns all forms of hate speech. While everyone has a right to express his or her political opinion, the behavior and sentiments reported do not reflect the values of our company. We are also confident that this behavior and sentiment does not reflect the values of the many Oculus employees we work with on a daily basis."

    • 1 Million Thank Yous

      Ashley The Know

Today's a pretty big day for The Know. Over the last two and a half years we've grown to become the latest YouTube millionaire under Rooster Teeth's umbrella--a milestone we passed today.

When I picked up a camera and headed to PAX to do some test videos for @matt to see if the Rooster Teeth audience might have a hankering for informational content in addition to narrative and comedic content I had NO idea we could ever end up here.

I remember when he asked what I'd judge to be a successful video, I thought maybe, MAYBE, after it grew for a while, 100k views per episode would be nice. When it immediately dwarfed those goals and grew over the next few months to 200k, then 250k, we knew we were on to something, but we needed to make some changes.

RT News was the only daily show on the Rooster Teeth YouTube channel, and we ran the risk of smothering the other shows, so we needed to give it its own space. We also had to change the name, because some jerks called Russia Today or whatever weren't content just to hog rt.com, they ALSO had to go and hog news.

And that's how The Know was born.

Since then its benefited and grown under the guidance of amazing people who I'm proud to have worked with.

Joey Aranda, my first coworker with The Know, who wrote and hosted news about entertainment while I covered the gaming side of things. He's gone on to produce shows for the CW here in Austin and continues to be a nutcase about Selena and Mean Girls.

Meg Turney, who joined us after just a few short months and immediately added energy, positive vibes, and her own brand of zaniness to the mix. She was never afraid to stand up to the line and hold it fearlessly. I'm so proud of everything she's doing now, even though I miss getting to work with her on a daily basis.

Bruce Greene, Adam Kovic, and Lawrence Sonntag, who joined the team when they formed Funhaus and have had an enormous positive influence over our content. They immediately shared the expertise gained over years working with Machinima to help us tweak and optimize our approach to The Know. Since then we've all had more fun with it and grown video news into our own special kind of monster. Their contributions and advice continue to be invaluable, and I feel lucky to have them. There's no one I'd rather run across the 1 million subscriber mark hand in hand with.

Eddy Rivas, who helped us out as a freelance writer while I was away doing The Amazing Race in the middle of the holiday gaming rush--the WORST possible time for me to go missing during the year in games coverage. But he nailed it. I was so impressed I kept him on as a freelancer for the next few months before bringing him on full time earlier this year. He's such a great researcher and writer, and he writes like the freaking WIND. Also he can probably kill you. We all try to be extra nice to Eddy.

Kdin Jenzen, who allowed me to steal him from Achievement Hunter to head up our editing. I always knew I wasn't a fast editor, but that was never as apparent as the first time Kdin single-handedly edited 30 minutes worth of news videos with full b-roll, quote attribution, and flub smoothing in a single day. Plus, if we ever have a question about a super weird Japanese game, he's the one who can answer it for us.

Justin Pack, our first intern-turned-production-assistant, who helps me wrangle co-hosts in a post-Meg world, shoot our updates, hunt down b-roll, put together link dumps for sources, and make sure our videos are up where they need to be, when they need to be.

And you guys. We love making The Know, but we couldn't make it if you didn't watch it. And you do, more than I ever thought possible. Where once I thought 100k views per day would be success, now we edge up close to 1 million views on a good day, and I really think that milestone is an achievable one.

Thank you guys for watching, for commenting, for sending us tips, for your fan art and your embarrassing screen grabs, for your enthusiasm for the same stuff we're excited about. You're my Know Buddies for life.

We're working on a special project for The Know and I need your help! I need to know what are some of your favorite moments since we started? Across any of our news updates/patch episodes/game clubs/specials/events/etc.

Really we're just asking why you like us so much. It's a really passive aggressive move on our part but you'd better have a good answer or maybe you don't like us as much as you say you do.

    • Bill Gates Considered Xbox an Insult

      Ashley The Know

Xbox co-creator Ed Fries has been letting loose all kinds of details about the console's origins, and he's back again.

According to Fries, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates initially considered the proposal of a gaming console to be an insult. In an interview with IGN, Fries related, "Bill walks in, he's holding our Powerpoint deck, throws it down on the table and says, 'This is a [blanking] insult to everything I've done at this company'—basically was the quote. And that was the start of the meeting."

It wasn't until an observer in the meeting noted Sony's gradual invasion of the living room and its possibility as a threat to Microsoft that Gates began to warm to the idea.

Despite the cold start, Gates and Steve Ballmer approved the plan and provided full resources for the team to work separately from the rest of the company.

And that's how mommy and daddy made an Xbox.

    • New Multiplayer Zelda Game Could Follow Breath of the Wild

      Ashley The Know

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was a runaway success at E3 earlier this month, and the variety of adventures had some hoping to share the experience with friends. While it looks like Breath of the Wild won't scratch that itch, we could see a multiplayer experience later on.

In an interview with IGN, franchise producer Eiji Aonuma said he'd like to try a multiplayer Zelda game again. He explained, "I would like to take what I learned from Breath of the Wild and see if we can somehow fuse those learning points into another multiplayer Zelda...That's definitely a possibility and we will continue to [experiment] throughout the Zelda franchise."

Previous multiplayer titles in the series include Four Swords Adventures, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks,, and Tri Force Heroes.

    • Join Us for Rooster Teeth at E3!

      Ashley The Know

Last year was our first time going all in on doing an E3 live show, and maybe it was the sleep deprivation because we decided it would be a great idea to do it all over again... and do more, because this year Rooster Teeth will be streaming for FIVE DAYS.

We'll have 2 livestreams on Sunday to take you through the press conferences for EA at 12:30PM PT and Bethesda at 6:30PM PT, then Monday Funhaus will take over and give you alcohol poisoning with an all-day livestream starting at 9:00AM PT and going until everyone's unconscious probably. Then the show starts.

Cure your inevitable press conference hangover with all-day streams Tuesday-Thursday starting at 10:00AM PT. We'll have interviews, demos, gameplay, podcasts, shenanigans, and Joel will probably give you a primer in economics.

Sound good? It will all be streaming on YouTube! Funhaus will be streaming on http://youtube.com/funhaus because that probably limits our liability or something, but you'll be able to catch all the other streams on http://youtube.com/roosterteeth.

      See you there!

      Ready for China?!

I've always wanted to visit China, so it's time to knock one off the bucket list!

      Kiss count: 1

Tyler and Korey claws coming out! Now who's #TheVillains?

This was a theme throughout the race. Tyler and Korey and the dancers worked together whenever possible.

So, basically, this roadblock was the Amazing Race WITHIN the Amazing Race.

Sheri is such a trooper. She's wonderful.

Burnie's running training was paying off here, that's for sure! It must have been a full hour of dashing back and forth.

Burnie's salt levels at max = my favorite. They never did find that airport clue.

Tyler and Dana eat our dust!

If only that train had been 1 minute sooner.

Run through amusement park for an hour then run through a park! Sure, why not?

We decided to take a train to the detour because there was a marathon going on next to the park so most of the streets were shut down. I worried we'd be caught in gridlock. Normally we'd take a cab 100%, but that made me nervous. Train might be slower than usual, but faster than traffic jam.

Switching detours is always scary, but if you know you have a lead (i.e. Sheri and Cole) it's less so. We didn't want to end up with another Chamonix where we were last because we were stubborn.

We may suck at balance, but hey! We can hang a painting.

And that's all she wrote, kids.

At least we broke that second place streak, huh?

Snakes, salt, kites, Indonesia. Let's do it!

I've always wanted to go to Bali.

PS - it's pretty great to know something about Brodie and Kurt that no one else knows.

I'm pretty sure there are more motorcycles in Denpasar than people in the US.

What did you do this morning? I carried fruit on my head like a star. You?

SNAKEEEEESSS! I told Tyler afterward that Burnie and I felt like Salma Hayek in From Dusk Till Dawn. He told me he's too young to get that reference.

Hey guys, you know what would be a great idea? Let's leave our taxis and keep running along the road!

Burnie's plot is my favorite plot.

We can all aspire to Tyler's level of shimmy shake.

So happy Kurt is getting credit for being such a great racer. Through the whole race he was our idol. He's strong, smart, athletic, can dance, is fluent in Spanish... the real question is what he CAN'T do. We haven't found anything yet.

Next time can WE have a task where we get fed along the way? Bring on the hot soup.

I wish the instructions said Burnie had to do the roadblock without a shirt on. Wink.

Poor Rachel. The second we saw her we were hurting for her.

GOOD JOB, BURNIE! I'm so proud of you. #1 out of the road block is a good place to be!

Yay, Rachel! Pushing through that challenge.

      SURPRISE TWIST: Double roadblock!

Building a kite = even more complicated than assembling IKEA furniture without instructions.

I love that they're showing the more serious side of our racing this leg.

      Me: "What's an outrigger?"

Burnie: "it's like a canoe with a sail. And it will have a motor. No way they'll make us row all that way"

20 minutes later of pure paddling...

      :/

<3 <3 <3 for Zach and Rachel. I wouldn't have been able to do that salt roadblock AND all the rowing after? That was nuts.

You ready to go to Dubai?!

I can't believe we're down to 6 teams. It feels like it's gone so fast.

First time in the race driving ourselves. We were so excited for this part.

Which detour would you pick? Race camels or trek through the desert?

As you watch the frisbee bros get stuck in sand, know this: those vehicles had a 4-wheel drive mode. Lulz

Racing a camel = super easy, right? I mean, they're so slow.

Yeah. Those camels destroyed me. Spoiler alert: I don't know shit about bikes.

Goddamn. I'm such a bike sissy.

Well, at least we weren't the only team to switch detours. There was NO WAY I was going to get that, even with the headstart. I wiped my lungs out so bad I couldn't breathe.

HOW COOL IS THAT TO SWIM WITH SHARKS?

I wish we got fed at every detour!

      GOODBYE, EXPRESS PASS!

But hey! Rocking that gold swimsuit, Burnie!

KICK ASS ON THAT ROADBLOCK, SWEETIE!

I didn't get into this gold swimsuit for nothing. Let's waterslide!

BTW, so refreshing to get in the water after all the Dubai heat and the half dying.

Suckas had to use the express pass to beat us by 10 seconds. Not too bad.

Second save for Cole & Sheri. How lucky is that? They're 2 out of the 3 last place saves so far.

Mad props on the Frou Frou liking... i actually saw Imogen Heap (singer of Frou Frou) in concert in Columbus, OH a few weeks ago, i had previously imported the new album (under imogen heap... will be released in the us on nov 1st) and it's gorgeous. And the only song she played from Frou Frou at the concert was "Let Go" which was unreal. But yeah, pick up that album when you can, and if you're in to that kind of music [which i'm pretty sure of due to Delerium and Massive Attack] you should check out Conjure One [rhys fulber from delerium's solo project], and Jem. Both of which are excellent. A pretty girl who kicks ass at video games. We need to clone you.

As far as peoples favorite films Spaceballs is awesome, all of mel brooks' films are awesome. There are like a dozen, I can remember spaceballs obviously, blazing saddles, young frankenstein( even better than spaceballs), high anxiety, robinhood: men it tights, history of the world part 2, and I havent seen dracula dead and loving it or holy moses. young frankenstein is a little slower though, spaceballs is like jokes for begining to end but there was so much to make fun of. there are like hundreds of stupid stuff to make fun of about science fiction space movies. " I bet she gives great helmet" ha ha. whatever all of them are funny

the one thing that was good in FFX-2 was the classing system. it did a fantastic job of allowing a 3-person party to handle every battle and its different requirements with flexibility and grace.

Ah. Final Fantasy 10. I am a fan of it but the developers should have stopped there. They ruined the greatness of 10 with the X-2. After 10 it did not hold up to any of my expectations. What I really didn't like about the game was the new way of gameplay and the battles. I've never been a fan of timed battles. I've always liked 10 where its more stratagey and you have time to plan out your attack. Every get your hands dirty in FF7? That is the game that originally got me into the whole series and still is my favorite out of them all.
